Old Jetta boy on his way to golf town

Postby Megaross » Wed Aug 14, 2019 10:32 am

Hi All,

So the story goes I used to own a MK2 Jetta many years ago as my first car, bought it for £500 and with no mechanical knowledge set about overhauling the significant works needing doing - heater core, new carb, gear linkage, sorting the mismatched deeply stained interior, fitting a working radio, weatherproofing it, polishing the dull paint, blacking the bumpers, fixing the leaky exhaust and countless vaccum and oil leaks on a very neglected example. I never did get the rust or wheels sorted even if it was driving well enough at this point.

Anyway when it was all going so well I got made redundant and had to part with it, after that I basically just ran motorcycles for years churning through projects until now - I must be getting sick of riding in the rain and winter and I'm back in the market for a car. Being that I hate driving new cars with all the sound deadening and lifeless controls that money can buy what else would I want, if not another MK2.

Plan is to find a decent every day usable example with a solid body (because my welding is dreadful), keep it mechanically sound, a few tasteful upgrades maybe and just enjoy it. Think I've already seen a solid prospect so watch this space.

Looking forward to getting to know the community a bit more and hopefully contributing some of my own mechanical knowledge along the way.

Hi welcome along and hope you find one.

My story is similar, many many years as an all year biker, one car family and the car was my wifes. Go to the point, early 40s thought I can't keep going through winters on bikes I want a car.... what car do I want ... oh a mk2 Golf GTI like I used to have when I was 20 something.... rest is in my build thread in my signature.

Currently without a MK2 of my own at the moment but on the look also.
