Ah spoke too soon, it wasn’t air/fuel mixture on the adjuster but it was air/fuel mixture issue. The choke flap was not opening despite the engine being hot, so running very rich. So adjusted bi-metallic spring and it fires up nicely now. I’m confident this was the issue.

Spring latching loop should be at 5 o’clock not 1 o’clock when hot.

400 miles with various hot and cold starts, no issues. I would like to check the air/fuel mixture again now but without owning a gas analyser, how do you do this? Any tips?

Glad it's working out for you and well done with the fix. Not sure how to test without, but I thought you could pick them up for reasonable money.... but on looking can't seem to find anything much below £50.

Still a decent tool to have, especially pre-MOT to give it a health check before going in.
