To fit a 1.3 Golf I'm looking for the return spring on the top of the gearbox which connects the release bearing lever to the gearbox. Posted UK please.

General Chat / Re: Brake bleed kits
I have Type A. Its worked for me but can be a bit tricky getting everything linked together and then staying together as it can pop off.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Breakdown
Breakdown cover, we have Auto Aid at £70 personal cover or whatever you're in. Use it once and you've saved. Like most though I think they won't cover the same fault.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Dilemma - which one to keep
I'd be keeping the Mk2 but I am biased. I'm not too much into modern cars. My wife had a new seat Leon and when that went my blind buy from Bristol was a Mk3 Golf Estate (1999) which she absolutely loves!  I have a mechanic friend who asked how come I got my parts so cheap. We run more than one car so I can preplan any work should it need it and I do 99.9% of my own work. I cringe when my kids tell me their garage bills.
PS Should you wish to enhance the Mk2 box carrying capability I have a spare set of roof bars.
PPS We'll also be keeping our Mk2 1.3

New Members Say Hi! / Re: having 4 mk2 cars, searching fanclub in sw-germany
So we have 5 Golf's. One Mk1 Cabriolet. Had a reconditioned engine before our ownership and a Weber carb. It certainly keeps up with modern traffic and isn't too bad without power steering. One Mk2 1.3 that we purchased after the old owners wife blew both the engine and gearbox. We have a spare but have yet to diagnose what went wrong. When working again it's like the Mk1. 3 Mk3's. The wife's car is a 1.8 Auto Estate with low miles. A 1.4 manual 3 door with high miles. Our newest is a 1.8 Auto GL. Silver with an all blue interior. Currently undergoing a heater matrix and heater flap material renewal. Ironically none of the suffer with common Mk3 rust problems. They are all different in their own way and don't cost half as much to repair as my kids newer cars.

Mk2 Parts Wanted / Blue dashboard rear parcel shelf mounts
Hi, I'm looking for a complete blue dashboard for our 89 Mk2 please. I may also need the rear parcel shelf mounts, plain or carpeted. I'm located in the South West so postage probably required.

58 with my golf 10 years ago. Hopefully my son at 21 with his golf will continue or even convert it to electric.

New Members Say Hi! / Re: Auto gearbox
I ran my auto 1.6 Mk2 for 10 years and 30,000 miles. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Used it as a manual as well as an auto. Kept up with an electric car, I3, from the off at one time. Then we bought another one, a 1.8. I preferred the 1.6. Both ended up with Weber conversions. Changed the fluid and filters on both and normal servicing. It is a job you can do at home. Once had a blast with an Oak Green GTI and he didn't win.  We still have an auto but a Mk3 Golf now and a manual Mk2(the sons).  Also had a Mk2 Scirocco auto with a Weber conversion, again thoroughly enjoyed that.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: How do you cope?
Buy another one.  I upgraded to a MK3 Golf. We did end up with another Mk2 With a broken engine and gearbox which we're slowly fixing. It's a 1.3 so cheap car tax as well so it's justifiable. Go on do it.

Technical / Re: Golf mk2 1991 1.6 Carb engine not running.
Do you know why it's been in the garage for so long. Was it a case of just parked up or had something gone wrong. Have you literally just tried to fire it straight away or have you done the basics for spark and fuel. What state are/were the spark plugs in as that may give a clue to how it was working prior to resting. I would for  a start change the inline fuel filter to a clear barbed one which will make it easier to see fuel going through. Is that an immobiliser/alarm fitted and connected on the os turret? No secret kill switch. If its running a Pierburg I would check the vac pipes as well and if in need of replacement use silicon tubing.  Has the carb float filled up with enough fuel and whilst your cranking make sure there is no fuel leaking around the base of the carb.
