Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Build dates...
Evening all!

Looking over this info again...

Has anyone got a a clue what the first 4 numbers on the sticker are?

The one above is 1222

I've seen 1036/1536/1031 etc...

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Build dates...
My car's one of the run out models and registered in January 1992, so I always knew it was from the end of MK2 production.

I've decided to replace the oil cooler and while looking into what that involves, it's possible I've the oil filter / cooler bracket from the MK3 fitted.

It has a slightly different profile to the images of MK2 ones I've found on-line, plus an extra threaded hole which is blanked off with a bolt. Two of the holes accept the oil temp. and oil pressure senders.

I already think the car has a MK3 fuse box and I'm pretty confident the bracket and it are both original to the car, not added later.

I obviously can't confirm anything, but it's a plausible explaination there was cross over of interchangable MK2 / 3 parts in that final period.

Anyhow got me wondering just when my car was actually made as opposed to registered.

I don't have a factory / museum certificate which would probaly save all the hassle, maybe someday but they're quite expensive, so have tried to work it out for myself.

I did this years ago for the MK1 and from what I can remember of that the MK2 data sticker is just an evolution of the earlier cars and presumably can be deciphered in much the same way.

If you look at your data sticker in the boot the very top line will start 1222 (or similar) then a break followed by a series of numbers in this format -

35-5-0226 (mine)

The 35-5 part is what you're after.

35 is the production week and 5 the day of that week.

In my case we already know it's a 1991 car, not to be confused with model year, (which for me is 'N' - 1992) and I think run between 1st August and 31st July each year.

The production weeks are calculated from January 1st of each year and the days of the week run from a Monday to Sunday.

There's on-line calculators that'll tell you the week numbers for a given year, for me week 35 of 1991 commenced Monday 26th August and ended Sunday 1st September.

If Monday 26th is day 1 then day 5 is Friday.

This should mean my actual build date was Friday 30th of August 1991.

I can't find a definitive reference that states when MK2 production ended, the closest is on VWHeritages history of the MK2 who just say in October 1991.

Rubjonny has an old post on ClubGTI where he says the final chassis number was 300000.

Mines approx 225000 short of that - is it possible they could have made that many during September and October, worldwide maybe?

Hello, quick question on this @L90E
What does the '5G' after the KW output correspond to on a MK2?

General Chat / Re: In the market for a cheap oil cooler?
Mine's still the original and visually seems to be OK, but a bit grotty and getting old.

Was checking to see what a replacement one would cost and prices are all over the place, even for the same brands if you don't shop around.

If you're with Amazon Prime they're doing a Febi Bilstein one for £12.38 including postage which can't be bad, even as a spare... see some on eBay looking nearly £60.00 for the exact same thing, mad!

Checked the Febi on-line catalogue and despite what Amazons own part suitability says 14550 is definitely listed for the 1.8 8v PB engine  - no worries though, there's free return postage if I've somehow got it wrong.

Doesn't seem to have a seal included but they're small change, Heritage even do one for £2.00.

I've found that Amazon and Febi Bilstein products seem to pair very well! I got my coolant sensor from there for about £4 if I remember rightly?
If you find the part number on ETKA they're normally cheap enough on there 👍

Cheers guys! Interesting. It does store the settings, think I’ll take that as a win and ignore the ignition issue (there is a wire plugged into that slot on the back of the radio but clearly it’s not doing much)

Guess I’ll take the risk on the flat battery thing! Wonder how long before that catches me out, sweepstake anyone?  :D

Haha I currently have mine to go off with ignition.. but retuning to radio 2 everytime is getting boring.. may have to join you!

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Radio
Hi all,

I’ve got an old Blaupunkt radio in my 1986 Golf Gti and it doesn’t turn on/off with the ignition, I just turn it on and off at the unit each time. Does anyone know if this is normal on this age of Golf?

Curious if it’s a fault or if it’s just how they come! Lockdown must really be biting...  ::)

Cheers

to

I have exactly the same issue with my old Panasonic

I can have it drawing permanent live but need to remember to switch off at the end.. the benefit is it stores my radio stations in the 'numbers'
However if I switch the feed at the back of the radio to ignition, it will turn off when car off, the radio will not store the station's though..
It depends what's more 'annoying'
Turning it off every time and risk low battery or having to retune stations every drive?

Short answer, mine does the same 👍

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Oil Pressures at Head.. 8v PB
well the FAE sender works a treat - the difference between the 0-5 and 0-10 bar sender is massive for accuracy of reading.

I now have a redundant 0-10 Bar VDO Sender.. anyone want one haha

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Oil Pressures at Head.. 8v PB
If it's possible, go back to your FAE sender, it was 5 Bar and fit it at the point above the oil filter to see what readings you get.

Different engines I know, but to give you an idea - The 205 has a factory 5 Bar gauge and is on its original sender so presumably 5 Bar compatible and giving as accurate a reading as factory gauges will allow.

At idle on cold start up it will be showing around the 4.5 Bar mark before eventually dropping to around 1.5 Bar when fully warm.

If you look at the specs for senders on the VDO webhop site it'll show the measurement ranges for 5 and 10 Bar senders which'll give you an idea of the differences.

If I've understood correctly they work by using resistance, measured in Ohms.

Most VDO gauges seem to work between 10 Ohms and 184 Ohms... if you're using a non-VDO sender with a VDO gauge you'll have to ensure it works between this same range.

Below is listed the 5 Bar senders ohms readings beside the 10 Bars - it'll show how using the wrong sender / gauge combination can affect the gauges accuracy.

Oil pressure is 0.0 Bar

11 + 10

Oil pressure is 1.0 Bar

47 + 31

Oil pressure is 2.0 Bar

82 + 52

Oil pressure is 3.0 Bar

117 + 71

Oil pressure is 4.0 Bar

151 + 90

Oil pressure is 5.0 Bar

184 + 107

The 10 Bar sender will continue in 1 Bar increments to its max as follows -

6 Bar 124
7 Bar 140
8 Bar 156
9 Bar 163
10 Bar 184

If your engines true oil pressure is 3 Bar your 10 Bar sender is giving the gauge a measurement of  71 ohms instead of the 117 ohms a 5 Bar sender would be so it'll be under reading by about 40%.

you're an absolute gent. this is detailed and tbh i didnt expect anything less haha!
you're improving my knowledge singlehandedly!

great shout on the FAE sender, ill pop it in here this afternoon and give the car a whirl to see what its showing!

Mk2 Golf Chat / Oil Pressures at Head.. 8v PB
Afternoon all,

I have installed VDO Oil pressure gauges in the 8v PB. The sender is sitting on the side of the head

When driving last night, the gauge read at around 3-5 when cold and a steady 1 when above 2k.. i have been reading around for Pressures on these 8v PB engines and would love some clarity?

when accelerating and cruising at around 3-4k rpm I was still sitting at 1 bar pressure..
idling though was around 0.5 Bar?

what should I be expecting?

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Auxiliary Gauges...
Modern cars are missing a trick not fitting (useful) gauges, just adds to the pleasure of owning / driving plus helps avert a mechanical mishap before it happens.

Did you fit the new oil pressure sender to the lower point above the oil filter or the upper point on the end of the cylinder head?

Mine went in at the end of the cylinder head with a t piece and also the OEM sender.

Need to work out the pressures for 8v PB and make sure all is ok.. now I know the pressure I feel like it could be low 🙈

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Auxiliary Gauges...
Good news... what turned out to be the issue?

So I bought a loom off eBay because my knowledge of electrical wiring isn't great.. and the set came with wires to go from gauge to sender and temp sender they also had bullet connector points.. however they were only about 6inches long, so naturally I got more cable and crimped bullet connector and ran through cable to sender.. didn't work.. finally a guy off the Facebook page Del Mahi gave me a call and said about there being one continuous cable through which made me realise.. wait there's a connection point.

Pulled it out the mornings threw away the small wore and connected my wire direct to gauge.
Working fine!

So happy this morning!

I have finally got it to work!

Sorted out a few gremlins, I'll be honest this has been hassle but the fact its working now is making me realise it was completely worth it!
