Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Fitting wiper bung & garage recommend
Managed to do the bung, used the old bung with new pin, the vw heritage bung I had got refused to go all the way home, but once bung in the pin slipped in nicely.
I did measure them all up before starting against new & old and we’re the same!
I don’t know💁 But it works now which is all that matters!
Cheers all for the help

Mk2 Golf Chat / Fitting wiper bung & garage recommend
Good evening all!

Just after a little help, i've had the rust bubbles fixed around the 3rd wiper bung by the body shop, but didn't refit the bung.

I've tried & i don't want to force the pin too much, plus the bung pushes back up when you hold the wiper mechanism against it as though its not fully home (approx 3-4mm).  So is it a case of brute force & ignorance or am I doing it wrong?  Also ETKA shows a bolt coming from underneath but theres no thread :o

Can anyone recommend a decent garage in Hampshire/Wiltshire/Dorset area that is good at setting up a digifant as I dont have a timing gun or CO meter & the engine seems a little flat & I've not had it tuned yet - (used to have my older cars done by Tune-Up a mobile engine diagnostic tuner in Exeter years ago).

Off to Beaulieu for Simply VW on the 19th June! Hopefully see some of you there!

many thanks for any help on either problem

New Members Say Hi! / New member from Wiltshire
Hi all

I suppose I had better put a post up to say hi!!
I bought my Mk2 in January from an 18 year old who had had it for only 6 months & decided that it was too much for him to do.

So I parted with some money & I bought Hiyal!

Its a March 1991 Big bumper Bright Blue Metallic 5 door Mk2 with a PB engine that has covered 230,000 miles, with the XT ultraviolet interior.

Whats good?

Its got an MOT!!!
It drives well & I have covered 700 miles since owning it, the only problem I had while driving it was the alternator tensioning bolt had stripped the threads in the alternator, thankfully i had a box of random bolts, fuses & clips in the boot!
Other than that the engine is quiet, no big rattles or top end tapping, good clutch & gearbox is fairly smooth but not vague in the linkage
The body work is all original as is the paintwork, albeit it has stone chips & car park small dents & some rust, covered later.
The electrics needed some work........I'll leave it at that.

Bad bits,

Electrics..............
wipers on constant, no electric windows working, no stereo, some real rubbish boom box wiring that wasn't even fitted well.  No rear wiper, no central locking
Bodywork/rust
Rust wasn't as bad as I thought it could be, only the rear wheel arch lips at the last 3 inches at the sill end have perished, the sills are solid & the rear panel still original, both the drivers doors have 2 small bubbles under the paint about 5p size each, blank wiper spindle has bubbling under the paint, it also needs a new bootlid as it is getting past saving. But thats really all there is thankfully.

So what have I changed so far....

Stripped out interior & all of the rubbish speaker/boombox wiring
Major clean & replacement of clips/trim
New window scraper seals
New hinge pin for dvrs door(dropped)
Central locking fixed (pipes undone)
Window regulator on dvrs door replaced & wiring sorted out, which now work
Rear wiper wiring broken in grommet to boot, fixed!
New plugs, leads , oil & filter change, air filter.
The airfilter box had had holes drilled in it, so that was replaced
A set of RA's & new set of Good year tyres bought (It did have BBS RZ 523 fitted with toyo T1R fitted but speedo was 10mph out at 70 mph!!!)
Sony stereo fitted along with replacing dashboard & front door speakers replaced
Front door membranes replaced & door cards refitted.

Slowly working round the car cleaning the paintwork.
Everything electrical now works apart from another post I have put up about the MFA.
Even managed to get the Toad alarm to work with the central locking/immobiliser

Want to get a standard set of spring/shocks to put it back to proper ride height & I have got a standard exhaust to fit replacing the milltek stainless one that is fitted, its way too noisy for my liking.

This is my 9th Golf & my 4th Mk2 I have owned, the first mk2 being a LHD '92 1.8 RP engined Royal Blue GT Special 3 dr when I was posted in Germany, I then had a 92 1.8 Driver, then many years later in 2008  I bought for £800 an 89 small bumper KR 16v in Jade Green 3dr, which I had in Germany for 3 years including trips to Malmo in Sweden on an absolute whim early one morning!!! (That was a brilliant car & never had any problems with. Then this one.

Quick potted history then of my mk2s

I'm sure that i'll be asking for info at some point!!

Thanks to all for the help that has been given already.

Cheers

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Help! Complete electrical failure
Thanks Monkey & Sly-gti

I threw in the towel & went to the scrappys & found a mk 3.5 cabrio with a CE2 fuse box that was clean & swapped it out as I found my fuse box was corroded at each end for the princely sum of £20 so i shoved as many fuses & relays as I could fit (& a few more!!).

So it has fixed my earlier problems (after cleaning all the earth points I could find), but then highlighted my wiper problem.  Which was why when I bought the car there was a spare set of stalks, wipers fixed after change of stalks, plus a 99 relay fitted for that special touch!! haha.

Thanks for your help

General Chat / MFA secret mode & other MFA issues
Hi all,

On the secret mode for the MFA I have looked at my area code & it shows a 6 instead of a 4 for UK, plus my MPG shows at 1.0 - 3.8 ? the air pipes are connected in the right place & no leaks as far as I can tell.
Plus my oil temp reads at almost double what it should be, such as 135 - 155 deg on normal road/motorway driving & my ambient temp is reading 26 deg when its actually 4 deg, but i expect that is just a sensor on its way out.

Everything else is right on the MFA - time, miles & speed.

So any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Help! Complete electrical failure
Hi,

Thanks for the reply,

There was no power at all, no cranking,no lights on dash, no radio, nothing at all.

Funnily enough I dropped the fusebox out to see if there was anything obvious in the back, but nothing. Went in for a cup of tea, sent message above, an hour passed & noticed that the parking light had come on, power back on!!!?!
Went outside the car started almost first time & everything works apart from the front left indicator & left side repeater.

Peculiar?????

Cheers

I.C.E & Electrical / Help! Complete electrical failure
Good morning!

Well it was!
I have a 91 GTI 8v that I was working on this morning which unlocked & started as normal, then without any notice the car cut out and lost all power to everything, including radio which was on at the time.
Now I have nothing on the key, yet there is still 13.5v in the battery.

So I am lost at the moment,it does have a toad alarm/immobilizer fitted, but that's not working either

Cheers in advance for any help.

Andy
