I posted on facebook but not having much luck getting help so I thought maybe people might be able to read through and take a bit more time to reply here? Would really appreciate if i can find someone clued up on carbs!
1989 1.3 Engine So this saga started because it smells really bad of petrol when im driving the car, my daughter constantly complains it gives her a headache. I cant see anything obvious. Ive checked all the fuel lines and they are new-ish anyway but all secure and not split or leaking. I cannot see anything obvious around the carb but then im no expert knowing what im looking for... The smell seems to be coming directly from the carb, its stronger smell directly over it, but then that might just be obvious as thats where the fuel goes I have a feeling its running a tad rich. It starts perfect when cold. It takes longer to start when its hot - could be related or something else? It idles fine. When you go to pull away it will sometimes kind of choke itself and splutter and you have to give it a rev to move. When you are driving it seems to drive really well.
I was going to adjust the mixture screw, but im being thick and i need to work out what carb it is to be able to find the mixture screw.... So on the carb it says Pierberg 2E so obviously i assumed 2E however in the haynes manual it doesnt look like the picture of the 2E. It looks like the picture of the 2E3. So would the '3' also be stamped on there if it was a 2E3 or would it still say 2E regardless and it could well be the 3? So when i know what carb it is I can work out where the mixture screw is. I have an idea BUT i have googled and it says most carbs turn clockwise to make it leaner, but the 2E turns anticlockwise to make it leaner... so again I need to know for definite what model carb it is so I dont mess up the mixture....
So the next thing i noticed while i was there was there was a lot of oil build up which seemed to be coming from the crank shaft breather pipe where it joins the airbox. I wonder if this is creating to the smell being as its just above the manifold? The pipe itself is very soft and very dirty inside so I guess it wont hurt to change it. Also I assume this yellow thing is a oil breather filter which looks ancient so it probably would be good to do that too? Is this is a bad idea and a pig of a job for any reason now is the time to tell me to leave it alone!
i have a replacement gearbox for my 1.3 4 speed now but want to make sure i have everything i need so i can take it to a garage and tell them to fit it. should i replace the clutch? it has done 54k miles and the bite is low but it could well be 30 odd years old? also are there any seals or any other little bits i should get?
Had the most awful experience yesterday... so most of you will know my project mk2 is very nearly done, just a few little bits of electrics to sort. I posted on a few car groups asking if there is an auto electrician that could possibly help me with it.
So yesterday a guy messaged me from a company, part of the name is 'Remaps' so i assumed he was an electrical guy. He said he could pop over to give me a price and take a look. So he came over, in a battered old Transit recovery truck telling me he can take the car today!! At this point i still believed he knew what he was doing and it would be an easy job for him.
The bits i need help with are 1) Horn not working, problem with earth at the wheel 2) Rear fog not working 3) Dashboard lights not working 4) Washers not working at switch but do work when put power to
So anyway, he starts going round my car saying that the steering column is dangerous, it has the tiniest little bit if movement, like really tiny and he said the steering wheel would sheer off and impale the passenger in an accident!! Then he says my brake light wiring that my mechanic friend did was so bad it will cause a fire. Said its choc bloc, which it isnt, and the power will melt the bloc!! Then he said he needs the old fuse box, the completely rusty, water damaged one, because some fuse boxes have different pins. Then tells me the the bridge bit in one of my relays is a broken relay and going to cause a fire... its the bride thing for a poverty spec horn!
he tells me he can do it for £300 and can take the car tonight and it will be fine outside his house. Bare in mind my car has no door handles on it. I said absolutely not no, my car is not sitting on the road under any circumstances. he said he leaves all his cars outside his house and no-one will touch it, he leave them all unlocked apparently....
So at this point i was panicking and trying to get rid of him. he sat there for about half an hour trying to convince me and then said he will come back sunday and do it on the drive but it will be more.
Honestly what is wrong with people. Im now scared my cars going to get stolen off my drive
Im trying to get my electrics working on my mk2, there is a build thread in the members ride section which might be useful as the car has been a major project and was full of water for a long time...
So the car now runs however it didnt have any electrics working. I am not good with electrics at all and not sure what should work and what shouldnt work with or without fuses etc....
So When the car first started running we ran it up so the fan cuts in, so that works... not sure if thats connected to any fuses or anything lol Also the handbrake light works.. that was it.
I decided to change the fuse box so i sourced a second hand one and a load of relays. I put all new blade fuses in and I have put in the relays I think it should have although im not 100% if its right as im very much a novice at this... i looked on the CE2 webpage thing so hopefully i worked it out. Not sure what the red circled thing is for but someone suggested rear fog light?
i also changed all the bulbs in the rear lights as these were all corroded.
So since changing the fuse box this is what I have working
Passenger Side Driver Side
headlight (this headlight bulb might need changing, ive not checked it yet) full beam X X side repeater rear indicator rear indicator
The rear lights on both sides flick on when i switch the switch but immediately go back out, cant get them to stay on?!
The front indicators are not working at all. (units are new) The dash lights are not working. The blower is not working. (motor possibly seized) the wipers are not working. (motor possibly seized) The horn is not working. (new horn) The rear number plate lights are not working.
Any help what to do now? I will get a headlight bulb and hopefully then i might have 2 fronts working...
Does anyone have any body panels for sale? i think im mainly looking for 3dr sills, rear side member repair section, front chassis connection plate, jacking point, boot floor.... thought i would ask before i order from heritage in case anyone had some left over that they wanted out the way. Thanks
Its been a long while since I have actually been on a forum rather than using facebook so I hope i remember how to do a post!
I have just joined as a member so while i await my membership pack i thought i would start a build thread on my current project.
I have had mk2 Golfs on and off as well as other VWs for the last 21 years. As I have got older and had to prioritize children and household stuff I had to give up cars and felt I would never be able to get another one now the prices have gone so high. I remember back when I was a teenager I used to pick these cars up for a pocket money and used to buy accessories and take them apart at weekends and have 4 different colour interiors and lights and steering wheels and all sorts, now everything is so expensive and hard to get hold of. Anyway, my chance came in July when I saw an advert on the Mk2 Golf Owners Group on Facebook. A lady was advertising this car asking if anyone wanted it before she let the scrap man have it for £200! Now usually im like 47th in line for such an incredible offer and I messaged only to be ignored. Realizing she was inundated and I wasnt first in line I was bidding on one on Ebay. I lost out on this one at the last minute and was gutted. Just then I was sent a message from the lady with this one saying she had been let down twice and was I still interested!! It was like it was meant to be and I immediately arrange to go and collect it.
My partner borrowed a recovery truck from his work and we drove over an hour away to go and pick it up. When we got there it was like something out of a Horror Film or an Urban Exploring Outing... The Car had been owned by this family for 20 years. It was bought by the parents for their daughter to learn to drive and as her first car. They serviced it and parked it in the garden and here it has sat ever since. Their daughter still has no driving license so has reluctantly admitted it is time for it to go. Unfortunately over the years it has been home to Spiders, Mice, Slugs and Snails and one of the doors was left slightly open. Eventually with all the soil and leaves that were covering it the drain holes blocked and the car filled with water. Even with the car hooked to a winch it wouldn't move, it actually was so solidly in the ground it pulled the truck towards it! The wheels would not free and were completely seized solid. We worked for a long time trying to free the car, get it on the truck and get away before it became dark.
