G - J / GT - Special Edition
The GT Special is a Euro/German spec and has the code E1E (which can be found in the boot or the service book).

So you should be able to check if you've got one.
The main points to distinguish it from a UK spec Driver is the black headlining, the tinted rearlights and the BBS RA alloys and so-called "Rainbow" sport seats.

It never had the GTI splitter at the front and was always a small bumper model, as was the Driver.

The engines were 1.8 and could have been either typical GTI engines in 8V (PF, PB) or 16V (PL or KR) but also the 90bhp monojet engine (RP), which was very popular in Germany.

Based on the GT and GTD was taken with the model year 1988, the GT / GTD into special sales program. Regional Meets / Retro-Sect meet Tewksbury
Hey gang,

I thought I'd share this with you as there will be more of these meets next year.

Ben (bunjiweb) is a former MK2 Owner and used to be on this forum back on the previous version, anyway a few months back he opened a Retro shop in Tewksbury. With a small retro car showroom and a shop full of 80's and 90's gadgets and gizmos. From Boomboxes, games consoles, RC cars.... pretty much everything from our childhood.

I heard it described as an Antique shop for our generation, which I think summed it up great.

Anyway, on Sunday he held his first coffee and cars meet at the showroom. For more info check this out retro-sect, it's defo worth popping over if you're in the area.

I'll post up details of future dates when I find them. And here's a selection of my pics, sorry I don't put the effort into photography and editing that others do. But there's plenty more on Instagram @retro.sect.

General Chat / DVLA start showing lost vehicles
Something odd has just happened.

Previously when entering an old reg on DVLA vehicle check, it would of shown no results. It just would not recognise the reg at all and wouldn't find anything about the vehicle.

I was going with the theory that this would usually indicate the vehicle has been scrapped, and most likely this was done before DVLA went digital which was early 2000s.

In my history, there are a number of vehicles that I'm fairly certain were scrapped, and most likely before 2000. In which case I think it was fair to assume, that DVLA believed there was no point in them entering the paper details onto the computer system - makes sense right?

Well, randomly, off the back of looking for another vehicle, I tried some of these old registrations and the details are now shown.

It can now find the details; make, model, colour etc.

Of the 3 vehicles I tested:
2 showed Untaxed: Tax due. dates were 1 June 2000 and 1 December 1992
1 showed SORN, sorn gives no date.

SORN was introduced in 1998

All 3 showed MOT: no results returned

MOT went digital in 2005, This makes sense there are no details as they were all off the road before this happened.

Another update to the DVLA details is that it now shows the date of last v5 issue.

For my 3 vehicles, I've got 22 May 1990, 8 September 1998, 22 December 1999.

Now looking at the May 1990 one and checking the dates, this was my purchase of the car. I used it for a couple of years hence the last tax date of December 1992. I sold it on, and back then I think it was the new buyer who sent off the v5 so it looks like that never happened. So I guess it's likely it ended up as a parts car.

I can't be sure of the other dates, but they appear to be not long after I would have let the vehicles go.

I just thought this was all very interesting and can help give a picture of a car long gone, whereas before there was just no data.

Other Car Sales & Wanted / 2002 Mk4 GTI 1.8T 20V
My nephew has just made me aware of a car he has for sale so I said I'd ask around.

It's a 2002 Mk4 Golf GTI - 1.8T 20V 150bhp

5 door in blue, with grey leather Recaro interior, with factory spec split rim BBS.

I haven't seen it in person, but he's sent me pics via FB messenger (below) it looks very tidy and all original. Which is an "uncommon"  thing these days, as they're popular donor cars or heavily modified. It's also only on 101k miles. and MOTed till September next year. No visible signs of rust on the wings so assume it's been done as I can't imagine they're the original rust-free wings.

It has an impeccable MOT history, with only 2 failures in its lifetime. 1 being wipers and light bulbs, the other coil springs that have all been replaced.

Asking price is £2500 located in Bristol

Would make a great winter runaround.

I'd be tempted myself if I actually needed a car.
I'm still working from home, so with the mk2 and the bike hardly getting used I can't really justify it.

If there's any interest I'll put you in touch directly.

Engine & Gearbox / Notchy clutch
That’s the best way I can describe it. When lifting the clutch pedal towards the biting point it’s like there’s a sticky point in the clutch pedal travel, which makes the clutch action not very smooth.

I can live with it, but It’s a bit of an issue as I’ve now got my son on the insurance with a provisional as I’m getting him driving.

Ideas on what could be the cause?

The clutch itself, no idea if it’s ever been done cars on 130k. Cable, pushrod?

General Chat / Snow foam lance clean up
I've had a snow foam lance for about 4 years, but had found the novelty was beginning to wear off. Mainly because, regardless of product used my foam was no longer very foamy.

So googling around to find out why the lance itself my have deteriorated I fond this blog post
https://www.slimsdetailing.co.uk/blogs/news/how-to-maintain-your-snow-foam-lance

So I bit the bullet and pulled it apart. I have a little ultrasonic bath, so I filled it with a 50:50 mix of distilled water and (corrosive) descaled.

The gauze itself I soaked on it's own in 100% descaler for a few more hours. Before putting it back together.

No pics, sorry. And although the result was more foamy and definitely better, unfortunately it wasn't back to it's original spec.

One thing I didn't do, which is says in the instructions is to actually poke out the little holes. I did depend only on the ultrasonic. So I might give it another go before giving up and buying a new lance. I hate the idea of disposable items.

Anyway, posting this here in case the information is helpful to anyone else, or if you want to follow the instructions.

Mk2 Parts Wanted / Wanted - Cylinder Head Lift And Alternator Arm Bracket
Does anyone have a scrap engine/head?

I'm after one of these of a 1.6/1.8 Goes on the left hand side by the upper cam-belt cover and the alternator shares the top bolt.

VW Part number 026903245A

Apparently fitted to Golf MK1/Golf Cabriolet MK1/Golf MK2/Golf MK3/Corrado/Scirocco MK2/Bus T4/Caddy MK1/Caddy MK2/Jetta MK1/Jetta MK2/Vento/Passat B2/Passat B3/Passat B4/Sharan MK1

There's a new one on eBay for over £50 and a used one that'll be £16 with post. It doesn't feel like it should cost that much so I'm looking for someone happy to take about a tenner. Better still if you're at Bristol Volksfest this weekend I'll take it in person.

I.C.E & Electrical / Mk4 Gamma5 stereo in a Mk2
I saw this posted on a German facebook group

A Mk4 Golf stereo, which is usually blue and red backlit, that has had the LEDs swapped out for all green.

Personally I think this looks great. These stereos can be picked up pretty cheap, looking at eBay they're mostly under £30, or about £50 if you also want the 6 disc CD changer.

I'll just leave this here for comments.....

I.C.E & Electrical / Rclick - aftermarket remote central locking into OE C/L
Re: aftermarket remote central locking.

Original post:
https://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/clubforum/index.php?topic=1242.msg10584&fbclid=IwAR0ADQxquZbqycafdSr3aFO3xH86bhza9bRJDDGChi0GU8hAizlJpItnAgE#msg10584

Using Rclick kit, like this:
https://rclick.co.uk/shop/index.php?id_product=173&controller=product

@ianmac86 I've pulled your post out here as I didn't want to clog your build thread, and I thought this info might be useful for others.  I'm hopefully, going to have a go at fitting the kit I got for Christmas soon. I was looking back at your post as a reminder and I realise you swapped out the OE master actuator for the rclick one. For some reason I thought you had piggy backed the new unit on top of the original one.

So, my question is how have you wired this up? as you must have something that feeds from the new unit into the OE system to trigger the pump and release the rest of the locks.

I'm trying to make the mk2 as user friendly to Laura as possible so she can use it when needed, hence the power steering the other month. Remote locking seems like a sensible upgrade especially with young kids.

I went for a cheap Rclick kit for about £20. I wanted to keep the existing vacuum system as I have a 5 door, it would of needed 6 actuators to completely change the lot as the fuel flap also lockable. That would have been alot of faffing!
This is what comes in the box

Guard dog watching me

Drilled the template in the only place I could seem to find that didn't foul the window when wound down

Connected the rods, I replaced the plastic part that had gone brittle and snapped

Fitted into place. I had to bend the rod around the one for the internal latch

Chopped the old harness leaving some slack on the old plug incase this goes wrong or I ever need to reconnect it

For now I have used crimped bullet connectors for ease of swapping wires round incase I get this wrong. I will more than likley solder and heatshrink when I'm happy that it functions properly

Bit of insulation tape to stop them hanging too close to the window mechanism

Found a spare live in the back of fusebox and connected the earth onto the claw

And it was that easy! I faffed over a few evenings but I think I could do it again in few hours. So far it works really well. It would be nice to see if I can connect it to the hazards to flash when it's locking/unlocking. I guess I'd need a relay for this? 🤔

I.C.E & Electrical / Intermittent reversing lights
When I park I reverse up to my front door, which always gets me the the opportunity to see the reflection of my rear lights in the door glass. I've noticed sometimes my reverse lights are on, sometimes they're not.

I find this odd. It's clearly not the bulbs and I assume it's not the light cluster as it's both. So I'm thinking it's the switch, wiring, or something else. Are there any known/common issues here?

I first noticed it the day after my MOT, but thankfully it must have worked for the MOT, or they didn't care. It worked after, it works the majority of the time.

Any thoughts?

General Chat / AliExpress
Has anyone ever ordered from AliExpress? How was your experience?

I'd heard a few people suggest it for non critical parts. I was after some replacement centre caps for my wheels. The same item was available on eBay, but I saw what I wanted on AliExpress for a fraction of the price. Knowing it was the same cheap Chinese tat on eBay for an inflated price I though I'd give it a go ordering form the source.

I placed the order in March, and 75 days later I've finally decided to request a refund since nothing has arrived. :(

The good news was the refund was issued pretty much instantly and since I paid with PayPal the money is back in my account. It would be nice to think the goods might still arrive but I doubt it.

General Chat / 10 years
It’s was 10 years ago (2013) about this time I joined this club, whilst on the look out for a mk2 golf (to replace the one I had in the late 90s). Not sure of the exact date as I guess that’s lost along with the old forum but it was a month or so before I eventually bought one and that was in early June.
