Title: Dodgy Members...
Post by: L90E on March 07, 2022, 02:42:27 PM
Maybe just can't see it, but nothing leaping out at me as to how to notify admin. of potentially dodgy members...

Have a look at this one - Marsillpost (https://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/clubforum/index.php?action=profile;u=988)

I have used my superpowers and worked out how to delete this member. It would appear you can only report a post not a user, unless anyone knows any different ???

EddyP has been doing a great job nipping these bogus members in the bud, before they can potentially do any harm.

Having said that it's unreasonable to expect him to be on here constantly and some are still slipping through.

We can all help and spread the burden / pick up on them more quickly by posting suspect member ID's on this thread for admins. attention.

Going to say it again - the forums joining process involves just a few clicks / having any old email address and doesn't seem to be vetted.

If it's doable I'd suggest blocking them before they get in is better than reacting after the event.

Biggest give-a-way, over and above the some of the choices of member name is the use of a link to off forum sites in their profiles.

Seems to be a change of tactic and including those links to the signature instead, maybe sussed how they're getting caught?

I did try looking at the members and sorting by date registered or the number of posts but there's no easy way to identify suspects. I can't do multiple filters like zero posts joined in last 10 days etc.

Also interesting, sorting by number of posts there are a number of known original club members/admins and moderators from the old forum that haven't contributed a single post to the new platform. That is disappointing and big nail in the coffin for the forum, if the OG team don't even want to get involved - but that's a different topic.

That's the main problem, unless there's something obvious you'll not be able to say who's legit and who's joined for some other reason.

Makes you wonder how many are already registered, but not openly revealed it.

I've no idea how these things work... if it's mainly automated bots would putting even a basic registration system in place that required more than confirming an email address maybe fox them, or at the very least cause enough hassle so they move on somewhere else?

if it's actual people and they're intent on getting in, it'll be harder to combat but perhaps something like having to make 'X' amount of posts before you can attach links would disuade them?

Anything that's going to be aggro. / consume too much of their time, may make it not worth trying to join.

Something needs doing - not a good look if someone visits the site and is faced with pages of porn links, reflects on us all!

Yes... 870 plus members and more than half haven't made a post yet.

The remainder are mainly single figures too, leaves just a hardcore of a few contributing.

That's how it goes unfortunately... it's a vicious circle and with less input, comes less input so it's just self perpetuating.

This was raised before... the lack of easy image uploading which I personally think is a killer but also imagine it's not an easy fix either.

Not my call and not criticizing, but would suggest it at least should be explored... just throwing it out there for discussion.

Deleted.

I do check the most recent users who register and delete before they get the chance, but it’s impossible to go through all the users.  There are obvious ones on the member database that get banned

I have seen rules on other forums, where a regular clean up is part of the process. An email to all members, which I believe is possible to warn them if they've not posted in the last 6 months their account will be deleted (I don't know if it's possible to query the database and find out all users that haven't posted in the last 6 months in this system)???

And other things like new signs ups are limited to the areas they can post in, and have to make 20 posts before they have full access. In the probation period, they can't add pictures either. This might be tools available in other forum platforms. I just don't know.

Just spent a while going through the forum stats and member list.

It'll let me prioritise basic stuff such as posts by number made / date registered etc. which helps but still had to randomly click on member profiles for more info.

One puzzling thing is that awful lot of joiners are showing as having never signed in again since initial registration, which I suppose can be looked at as a good thing if their purpose wasn't legit. Flip side is that trend's probably not so good for forum traffic stats.

I know absolutely nothing about how forums are created / programming... even what the correct terminology is!

Our forum has a link at the bottom to Elkarte.net (https://www.elkarte.net/)

As a complete novice all of the following info. means nothing to me but did see bullet points such as -  Integrated video embedding for youtube, vimeo and dailymotion / Drag and drop file attachments / Improved Anti Spam measures which sound vaguely relevant maybe?

Looks like there's also a dedicated forum for people using their set up.

Cut'n'paste from the link...

Happened to be on site as that particular plonker was registering.

Accounts deleted, thanks for the heads up.

I would have thought it was obvious you need a Ford forum if you want to meet up with local escorts - some people just don't get it.  :o

in the new members say hi section,
there seems to be a pornspam high tide, over the last few days.
and sometimes it takes some of them, until an admin comes by.

the solution could probably lie in the filters, that you have there,
but no harsh measures, please ;-)

Sorry guys; we do have a filter, but some do get through.  Recent one deleted along with posts.  Feel free to PM me with username as during work I don’t have access to my phone but can sort as soon as possible.
