Title: New Member with a fast idle problem already 🙂
Post by: HobbsLundie on October 21, 2023, 10:12:01 PM
Hi recent purchase of a 1990 1.6 petrol MK2 with 46,000 miles. With recent 400 mile journey car developed a problem with a fast idle in neutral roughly 2/3000 revs. No leaking hoses and carb sealed not drawing in air both thermostat sensors replaced but still nothing, still running fast. Any suggestions on where to look next?

Does it slow down if you lift the pedal? If it does it could be a sticky pedal or worn throttle cable.

Think I seem to remember my carb golf doing the same. and it turned out to be the thick rubber carburetor mount being split. But might not be that worth checking.

Check your waxstat is working, by removing it (just leave the hoses attached) and putting it in boiling hot water.
