Title: Engine Shutdown when warming up
Post by: Co-luck on November 05, 2023, 02:45:58 PM
Good Day,

Just got a 1991 Golf with a 1.8L .
Got multiple problem that I'm currently solving and the actual main one is that after about 10 minutes of idling the engine shutdown with engine temp and engine oil pressure coming on.

temperature on the gauge isn't even to the middle bottom coolant hose is cold.
i suspect the thermostat but want a second opinion.

thank you!

Hello,

If the engine is shutting down after only a few minutes, it could be that it is coming off it's cold start cycle (where it adds more fuel in) and then the mixture isn't right to continue running.

Can you keep the engine running if you push the accelerator a little?

If so, see if you can take it somewhere to get the carb mixture set up.

No Engine oil pressure and coolant temp light come on and it shut down even if i don't just idle with it. Playing with the gas pedal or not after if warn up it shutdown. that why i think thermostat. will remove it for testing when i get a chance. As its more a project car that anything probably in for a long and slow troubleshooting.

I would agree that the thermostat is faulty as after 10 mins idling the thermostat should have opened. I don't see how that affects the oil pressure light though.

Pretty sure the oil pressure light is coming up because the engine has shut down.
It's not smart enough to shut down if there's low oil pressure.
Oil, water temp and battery lights all come up if the engine stops and the key is still in the ignition position.

Update,

Thermostat removed and refilled for troubleshooting.
well run no issues with higher temperature while i was filling it up without the cap open.
as soon as i put the coolant cap on both light came up coolant temp and oil pressure.
any idea?

Personally i think head gasket leaking while hot or head cracked that let pressure in the coolant system maybe?

Its possible, check for white mayo under the oil cap.  I'm assuming no signs of oil in the coolant.  Next step is to do a compression text.
