Title: Gearbox or gear linkage problem
Post by: Mytch on June 26, 2024, 12:24:41 AM
Hi everbody,

I’ve recently bought my second mk2 as I missed my first one I sold a few years back.
1.8 8v

I was going fantasticly until the driveshaft bolts came loose on the near side. The drive shaft mashed itself up so I got another driveshaft and now the gearstick/linkage/gearbox isn’t happy.

I can get first and second but it’s like churning butter. The left and right motion feels like there is something in the way.

On the gearbox the selector doesn’t want to move in and out.
(that’s with the linkage all disconnected)

Is that a blown gearbox. Or is it the selectors that are not happy.

Thank you everybody for your time

Cheers
Mytch

I've never heard of a driveshaft knackering a gearbox before by coming loose.
Typically, if it jammed up the drive flange, it would have destroyed the clutch or the diff.

I'd start simple, refurb the shifter and align it properly again.
Even if that's not the root cause, it'll make the car feel a hell of a lot better,
