Title: AWD 20vT Mk2 GTi.
Post by: Savagesam on July 14, 2020, 11:18:56 AM
Hello all,

And my Instagram is @syncroMk2

Here is my current build, 4wd running haldex, with a 20vT and a K04-064 for the time being eventually I want to build a 16vT with more than 500bhp.

Going for the sleeper look, so staying on 14” factory standard bottletops, absolutely standard to look at, maybe slightly lowered but not much.

As I can’t upload the pictures to here I’ll upload them to imgur and then post them across, here’s a couple I think I may have already.

So I got the car on the spit, and stripped the interior out.

Then turned it over and gave the underside a clean.

Some TFR later and we are clean!

Then went to town with the grinder.

Love where you're going with this build.

What size fuel cell are you planning to run?

Planning a 45l eBay jobby, there’s plenty of space behind the diff and Under the floor. Or I’ll get something a bit bigger made up, depends how I feel when the time comes really

That's not too bad, thought you'd have to go smaller with the rear cage.

In my old 20v (depending on how I drove it), I used to see about 290-310 miles to a tank.
I also had an effective volume of about 45 litres.

If you take a couple litres out for real world situations, you should see a range of about 280 miles.

No rear cage! It’s going to be a fully functional road car.

I used to get 350/400 miles on my old one with a 20v and that’s with the standard mk2 tank which is a bit bigger so, I don’t mind losing out a little but I don’t want to be filling up every 5 minutes! But this will be much quicker and heavier so it’ll use more for sure.

I ment the rear diff cage, you mentioned Haldex, so I figured you'd be putting the whole cradle in.

It's kinda odd, I used to have a standard mk2 tank, but always used to fill up 45-47 litres before it would click off.
Maybe I never ran it down as far as I could.

Oh I see, I’ve got a mk2 rear end, and I’m as we speak, making a bracket to hold the haldex diff

Well here we go...

We built a spit:

So I bought complete mk2 Syncro running gear, with the plan of using that and upgrading it later, then it hit me that it’s stupid and just fit the correct stuff first time round.

So most of the early pictures are Mk2 Golf parts.

So I cut the tunnel out, and then put the prop in and measured my height.

Then started my filler sections. This was a boring job.

So I moved onto the back, diff mount made from Range Rover tow bar.

Then made a boot floor

Did some more tunnel, drilled new holes for the hand brake tubes

Managed to source a syncro console

Fitted a new battery tray

Then this happened...

And then this.. TT engine mounts, so I can have loads of space for mega big turbo!

Someone put a subframe in the way so i modified it and cut the mounts off.

Made some mounts and stuff to get it to the right height

Then mounted the diff once the engine was in place, using the TT prop.

Final welding,

Tapped and front support

Then in the car!

Then to move the prop to a more direct route, tidy up the shifter cables.

Tunnel sealed and ready to go.

This makes me a little bit happy!

And put some bits inside..

And almost finished my wiring now, at last!

And back on its own wheels!!!

Well.. I’ve done a bit more, sorted the holes I made for the engine mounts.

Then fixed the awful repair someone had done in the past. Thank you Brendon for the cut!

Welded in.

And both sides all sealed up.

To the untrained Golf eye, you’d never know!

Then onto my dog bone mount. Bolted up, marked and cut.

Tacked in and PAS rack fitted to see what’s going to touch. I’ll have to make new lines up but thats no problem.

Then welded up the bottom.

And that was it, primed up and put back together.

Not a lot of patience needed tbh, I just cut where ever I want to cut and then weld it up 😂

I hope so! There certainly is, but it’s all fun and games and I won’t be building another one that’s for sure.

A TLDR;

I fully stripped, and raptor’d the whole underside.

Painted the engine bay.

I completed the work to the subframe and rear axle, sent everything off to powder coat.

Made a mount for the throttle pedal, and fitted an early fabless hydraulic clutch mount.

Painted the inside of the car and then added sound deadening before fitting the interior and dash wiring.

Fitted a K04 20v engine as I didn’t fancy the big turbo anymore. I did make an exhaust but that got nicked out of the car so I’ve got to do another.

Made a pair of rear shafts, and I’m yet to make the fronts.

Wiring for the engine is in, coolant hoses are done, interior 80% done, need to find some screws etc in the parts boxes. Brake lines are all done.

Front shafts and fuel are my next big jobs. Then build another exhaust and it should be able to go for an MOT.

And then paint! Obviously there’s loads of bits in between but that’s the main jist of it really.

Here’s how she currently sits.
