Title: Door reinforcing bars...
Post by: L90E on September 25, 2021, 09:22:26 AM
Might be well documented already, but new to me - was removing the heavy reinforcing bar from the drivers door yesterday and initially couldn't get it to manoeuvre around so as to come out via the inside of the door.

Penny dropped that the oblong grommet below the door latch hides the hole that allows it to pull straight out - so if you've every noticed it / wondered why it's there, now you know... clever old VW.

You know, I'd always wondered what that was for!
Just figured it was something to do with the American auto seat belt system

I've often thought about putting a reflector or even a 'door open' red light in there as you find in some cars.

Note: the reinforced door bars aren't in early cars. Not sure if the change over is 86/87 when the quarterlights were done away with or if this was a staged change with them coming in a bit later 88/89.

Don't actually think they came in until big bumper, near positive my 89 G Reg small bumper didn't have them.

Yeah I agree it was on the big bumper models. I had to source a blanking grommet when I bought a replacement door from heritage parts as my small bumper 89 model didn't have the bar fitted.

Thanks for clarifying. I knew they weren't in the early doors of my old 86 or 87, and I thought I hadn't seen them when I pulled my 88 apart but I wasn't 100% sure. I forgot to notice in 91 when I was doing the door membranes.

Hope that it's ok to reopen this thread, but has anyone got a spare door reinforcement bar (inc. fixings) that they would like to sell?  My driver's door doesn't have one fitted and it seems like a useful safety measure?  Thanks.

You could try Matt at Mk2spares, he's on facebook and has an eBay shop but if you have difficulty getting hold of him post up on here  I'm sure someone can pass on his number.
