Window etching

Postby Jack » Tue May 17, 2016 11:33 pm

My golf has all the windows etched except the tailgate and the drivers window (both replacements as they've been smashed). As I'm doing a full rebuild I thought it'd be cool to get the new Windows etched, anyone know anywhere that does this? Want it to look as close to the original etching as possible. Thanks.

You used to be able to get kits to do it as a diy thing.

You can still get the chemical etch. Used it on my motorbike a few years back in a datatag security kit. They mark caravan windows in a similar way with their Chris reg.

If you could get the chemical, take a close up pic of the etch with dimensions to a vinyl graphics place and see if they can knock you up a stencil.

Stick on the stencil, apply the chemical for the appropriate time then wipe it off as per instructions then peal off the sticker - job done.

That is of course providing no ones else comes back with a company that can still do it in a period style.

Found the etch stuff.

And have now just discovered a gap in the market for supplying period window etch kits for classic and retro car owners. Just wish I hadn't sold my vinyl cutting machine.

I'll contact a few companies as I don't trust myself doing it, was just wondering if it was possible.
