Title: 020 explosion
Post by: NickM1984 on September 23, 2021, 06:19:40 PM
Evening all. Just took the Golf out for a spin to collect the Chinese take away and when I pulled away at the traffic lights I heard a god awful racket from under the car and then some loud whining, a slipping clutch and the lovely smell of gear oil. So I pulled over sharpish and had a look….yes the dreaded ‘gearbox has S##T itself’ nice puddle of oil forming on the road (probably the diff- haven’t had a proper look yet).
I pulled off gently too so I’m shocked this happened but hey that’s life.

My mk2 is running an AUQ with the 020 gearbox.

QUESTION 1
Do I just fit another 020 box and just wait for this to happen again

or

Question 2
Does anyone have a full 02a or 02j setup I can buy please

cars hey…..

100% get an 02A or J in there.
The 020 boxes only take about 150bhp reliably, chances are, you're knocking out nearly 200.
There's a reason VW changed the box design when they started punting out ABFs.

If I were you, I'd go for an ABF gearbox, as the ratios are pretty good.
Then go to someone breaking a mk4 and get the 02J shifter and tower.
Put it all in and you'll have a great shifting gearbox.

If you're feeling particularly flush, get a dieselgeek short shifter too.
Makes a huge difference!

Thanks Monkey.
Only thing is sourcing every last bit to suit that setup. Like I’d need clutch, flywheel, hydro slave cylinder, pedal to match…. The list is probably massive and finding these bits now is double hard and double £££.

Might be better off buying another 020 and get it fully forged 😂
