Title: is 3d-printing plastic parts legal ?
Post by: mk24ever on February 08, 2022, 12:53:37 PM
now that 3d-printers are around,
one could model, print and share spare parts.

is this completely legal ?
any copyright issues or something ?

after reading this (https://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/forum/general/1975-copyright-on-spare-parts) page, i take it as legal.

tell me below, if you have other info.

You'll be fine for personal use. Might be a different story if you started producing parts to sell for profit. However, if you're able to adapt/modify a part to improve it then something 'new' would be your design.

I'd second what Tim has put.

You might want to miss the VW logo and part numbers off your "version" too!
While you are experimenting can you print me off a .......(kidding).

parts without vw-logo and partnumber
might be an improvement in it of it self.
it is, for instance, easier to clean flat surfaces.

plus if the page is right, i should be safe.
moreover it is said, that vw goes easy on oldtimer lovers.

therefore i've done stuff
and put a linklist (https://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/clubforum/index.php?topic=1308.0).

in the news, there is an article about honda (https://www.thedrive.com/news/honda-orders-big-takedown-of-honda-related-3d-printing-models-from-maker-communities), ordering a takedown of honda-related 3d-models.
on the other hand ford (https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/owner-resources/vehicle-documents/how-do-i-use-3d-printing-to-customize-my-ford-maverick-pickup) shares some of their design with us.

maybe we could chill about vw and, since you take your stuff mainly from ebay,
you folks may not care that much at this point, but let's put a few words early.

what do you think where this is going and how do you think about it ?
