Title: 4 or 5 gears ?
Post by: mk24ever on February 12, 2022, 09:33:39 AM
going steady 30 km/h in the 3rd, steady 50 km/h in the 4th,
but from 70 km/h on, i would miss a fifth gear on my already farreaching 55 ps.

has vw had a reason for the 4-gear-standard (which some call robust) ?

You don't say what you drive; other than you suggest you have no 5th gear.  I think VW chose gear ratios well for the market their cars were intended for.
I would say the gear ratios on my 89 PB GTi are perfect for maximising in gear acceleration where it counts.  The only car that has come as close to getting this right in test drives is a Porsche.  The down side is the engine is busy at motorway speeds.  I tolerate that but if I want a relaxed drive I take the keys to something else.
My advice is to enjoy a MK2 as it was designed and left the factory and if it doesn't work for you; buy something that does.
