Title: Hello
Post by: wmaclough on July 12, 2022, 11:33:23 PM
I have owned my 1989 GTI 16V since April 1989 when I bought it with a bit more than 600 miles on it.  The Odometer broke about 16 years ago showing over 316,000 miles on it, so I am guessing (with US average yearly mileage, that I have around 500,000 miles on the car.  I have been a member of the US based VWVortex site for many years, but as with many there, my use of that site has ebbed over time.  Right now I am facing a problem born from the fact that parts are scarce.  In this case, I am taking the opportunity in joining The Owners Club, to see it I can find some that were supposedly "re-poped" (I think that's the terminology) or NOS somewhere outside of the USA.  I won't be so crass as to go into them my first time on this site, but I am open to emails from any of you folks that are on topic.  I look forward to meeting you online and maybe finding some parts.  Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome, congratulations on 33 years plus of ownership.
Parts availability here is respectable and quite good within EU countries. Post your requirements and see what response you get. Responses here tend to be slow but reliable. There is also a Facebook group which is where i go if I need a quick response and range of opinions.

Hi Bill,

Welcome to the club, impressive you've had it for so long and done that mileage!

Hello.

There's a good community over here, and even though prices for parts (and cars) have rocketed in recent years, there are still a lot of parts around and some specialists starting to re-manufacture original spec items.

Worth noting, that there appear to be a few differences between Euro and US cars so:

1. would be great to know more about how your cars spec out
2. sourcing parts from UK and Europe may open up some interesting variants for you
3. there's likely to be a few people over here keen to get hold of some US-spec parts, so great to have a potential connection on board.

Welcome

Welcome. It just goes to show that "nipping down the road" involves vastly different distances in the US compared to the UK !  :D
I've been watching some State-side Wheeler Dealers and there seems to be a trend to bin the US specific bumpers in preference to the more subtle euro spec. I'm interested to know how does that align with local regs which implemented them in the first place?

Is the car on the road and are you still using it?
Do you have any photos?
