Title: My very ambitious project mk2
Post by: G268SWD on September 19, 2022, 12:57:25 PM
Its been a long while since I have actually been on a forum rather than using facebook so I hope i remember how to do a post!

I have just joined as a member so while i await my membership pack i thought i would start a build thread on my current project.

I have had mk2 Golfs on and off as well as other VWs for the last 21 years. As I have got older and had to prioritize children and household stuff I had to give up cars and felt I would never be able to get another one now the prices have gone so high. I remember back when I was a teenager I used to pick these cars up for a pocket money and used to buy accessories and take them apart at weekends and have 4 different colour interiors and lights and steering wheels and all sorts, now everything is so expensive and hard to get hold of.
Anyway, my chance came in July when I saw an advert on the Mk2 Golf Owners Group on Facebook. A lady was advertising this car asking if anyone wanted it before she let the scrap man have it for £200! Now usually im like 47th in line for such an incredible offer and I messaged only to be ignored. Realizing she was inundated and I wasnt first in line I was bidding on one on Ebay. I lost out on this one at the last minute and was gutted. Just then I was sent a message from the lady with this one saying she had been let down twice and was I still interested!! It was like it was meant to be and I immediately arrange to go and collect it.

My partner borrowed a recovery truck from his work and we drove over an hour away to go and pick it up.
When we got there it was like something out of a Horror Film or an Urban Exploring Outing...
The Car had been owned by this family for 20 years. It was bought by the parents for their daughter to learn to drive and as her first car. They serviced it and parked it in the garden and here it has sat ever since. Their daughter still has no driving license so has reluctantly admitted it is time for it to go. Unfortunately over the years it has been home to Spiders, Mice, Slugs and Snails and one of the doors was left slightly open. Eventually with all the soil and leaves that were covering it the drain holes blocked and the car filled with water.
Even with the car hooked to a winch it wouldn't move, it actually was so solidly in the ground it pulled the truck towards it! The wheels would not free and were completely seized solid. We worked for a long time trying to free the car, get it on the truck and get away before it became dark.

First Pictures of the car....

Wellcome, Is this the car on Facebook that can’t be lifted to remove the rear axle?  If so this is an ambitious restoration. Looking forward to following this build thread.

It sure is! Its been a labour of love and pure lunacy so far lol

It was only when we got home I realized how very mental I must be....
We got the thing on the truck... but didnt think about how we would get it off! LOL. it had to go on my driveway but with nothing to tie it to to drag it off and my drive being at a 90 degree angle we tried to put it on skids (baking trays)... this didnt work and we very nearly lost the car off the truck sideways which would have been disastrous!!
In the end it got pulled off by our Passat but we broke 2 jacks and 4 baking trays in the process!

I was so proud despite the state of it I just had to give it a wash!

The first job I had was to try and free up the wheels and get it to roll so we could get it on the driveway!

We had to smash the calipers off it in the end and take out the brake shoes jut to get it to roll, everything was just fused together!

Next I wanted to get the passenger door to shut as it was seized up partially open... Took a while of spraying it and working with it but eventually it opened...

When the car has more rust inside than outside  :))

I was still on a mission to dry the car out so had to take all the carpet and sound proofing out which was absolutely soaking wet. The floor is surprisingly solid so that was painted.

Although we got the engine to turn over we decided it was just so rusty on the outside i would rather change it than have to rebuild it and buy all new hoses and bolt on parts...
so out came the original 97k engine...

Sourced a 1.3 engine with 54k miles from another mk2 owners member and took a little weekend trip up North to collect it :-D
Fitted same weekend with new engine mounts.

Impressive progress and nice to have a runner.  However, don't you need it on a rollover jig to fix the underside?

Edit: having caught up with your pictures. this looks like it was a good car before it was abandoned in a garden with the door slightly open.  Shame but looks like you are doing it proud.

Edit 2:  Looks like it has been modified by a previous owner, GTi wheel arches, GTi wheels, radio with removable fascia.  What are your thoughts, restore it to factory or as it was when it was parked in the garden?

We are doing the engine and the interior bits we can do on the driveway first then when my partners work closes over Christmas it is being recovered to the Garage and we will be doing all the welding. Its going to have sills both sides, rear corner sections (where the rear axle mounts), front corner sections of floor and jacking points, a whole boot floor and a couple of little patches here and there...

The fuel tank only had 1 strap left holding it on, the other 2 had broken off and all 3 were in a terrible state so its had 3 new tank straps

Its also had the flaps in the air box cleaned and wrapped in silver tape to try and restore them and a new heater matrix...

The wheels were given to me by the previous owner, he had them in his garden too so i put new tyres on them and stuck them on this car so it can roll. It originally from the factory had 13" steels but came to me with battered teardrops which i sold as they needed some serious resto.
Im not sure who put the arches on, they were properly riveted on, looked factory/dealer but im not sure. The guy said he bought it like that.

Im going to restore it to factory bar the wheels. I cant stand those 13" disc looking things lol... im going to get an original stereo and everything :-)

While in the garage she has so far had the suspension changed, new shocks, re-used the red lowering springs that were on before because they seemed ok and new top mounts..

She now has a working foot brake :-D just waiting for guide tubes to be able to sort the handbrake...

And she has had welding to inner arches, in the engine bay, the passenger sill, driver sill and driver side front jacking point...

Im back at the garage today to do the exhaust and some other bits before she comes back home
Title: Re: My very ambitious project mk2

so today the handbrake guide tubes have been re-used, had to drill out the bits that were rusted and stuck on the inside...
the new exhaust front pipe is on...
the sill on the driver side is welded on...
battery clamp section had to be cut out and a new bolt put in...
radiator bolts put in...
bonnet cable reattached...
some painting...

Please bare in mind though, my other half is NOT a welder... he has done this to help me out because it was not cost effective to have it done at a proper restoration place.. also I am clearly NOT a painter lol
I just wanted the rust cut out, made solid and some paint on it and I plan to get it tidied up professionally in the summer :-)

Ive got another fuse box and a load of relays so will replace that and hope for the best :-/

Next jobs are..
Sort out some electrics, nothing works so going to start with replacing the fuse box and relays.
Change the brake servo and hopefully stop the hissing/vacuum leak.
Find some sound deadening/ underlay and re-fit the carpet.

Just need some help with electrics...

I am not sure which relays it is supposed to have in it. These are what was in there and have all been replaced with better ones except the number 1 bottom right which i cant find....

This is the new fusebox...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52653721657_c57f0e6f41.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2odQ62c)327905099_1721677841559755_1162812222456635180_n (https://flic.kr/p/2odQ62c) by Michelle Hodder (https://www.flickr.com/photos/196539095@N04/), on Flickr

I need to know what I am missing as im pretty sure there was supposed to be something in the bottom right (was a number 1 but cant find one to buy?) also the one next to it which looks to have snapped off and disappeared?
Any ideas what I am missing, what number the relays are and what they do?

I have so far got 1 headlamp working and 1 side repeater, nothing else is working... so either its relays or wiring.

It looks like some kind of jumper lead, to take a feed elsewhere - potentially aftermarket or some kind of bypass.

Yes im very aware the carpet was originally black, same as the boot carpet but i couldnt find black in good condition so i went with the blue as it was a good price. I can always change it later on if i find a better example.

Also fitted the passenger side door handle..

Got a few little issues to work on, something up with the starting. The battery is new, and the starter is only 7 months old but for some reason it has decided to crank really slowly like its dead and not fire up. Im thinking either the battery terminals or the starter so im going to take the starter back under warranty. Also got a loud creaking/rattling noise it does something when pulling away, sounds like its by my feet area. Im thinking steering rack/column but got to get it looked at....
Took her out in the rain today for a few pics....

Just as we got home and i reversed on the drive the creaking/clicking noise was there so we had a listen and a look and found it was coming from the lower arm rear bush... the lower arms are brand new but i think perhaps this side was put on without the inner collar and is causing the arm to move/vibrate!!

Ordered a new collar thing and also a front wheel bearing for driver side. Also ordered original Dealer Plates and Sticker today... very excited to get these!!

I have a similar issue with non-starting. Often very slow to turn over, sometimes fine! Always does start though (so far). I've changed the battery, and checked all the earths/feeds but I had assumed my battery terminals were ok. They look very similar to yours though! Perhaps I should invest in some new terminals too.....

It looks fantastic.  Dont know if you've tried it but on the plastic on my sons golf I have painted them with forever black bumper dye.  It works well and seems to last.  Its tricky to avoid brush marks, but you don't notice them from 6ftf away, which is good enough for me.

Yeah i wanted to do mine with black bumper paint and went to 3 different Halfords, all sold out so I got annoyed and impatient and did them in Grey bumper paint instead... so they are nice and smooth and fresh... just grey!
I will do them black at some point, not sure the forever black will go over the grey paint?

Here she is Sunday at Stanford Hall VW Show :-D she managed to pop a fuel pipe off on the way home, stank of fuel! but luckily was a quick fix at the side of the road. She has done well so far on the 2 trips out she has had.

Few more bits ordered today, got some grey decals on the way and some speakers for the dash, Ive wired in the Stereo now which works! Got to tighten 2 of the engine mounts as we noticed they have worked loose! And im going to see if someone can get the dent out the swage line on the driver side door, its really bugging me now, it lets the car down

Its looking superb, a credit to your hard work and determination.  The alloys look spot on, and suit the car.  I'm a big fan of 'bread and butter' models which are probably  less common than the GTi now.

FYI - that's an 8v splitter. A 16v one is the same but has the vents cut out and air ducts that go to the arch liners for brake cooling.

Looking great though  8)

Will you be at the National Meet?

So only a few little updates...
The noise has been diagnosed as the Gearbox, diff bearings apparently, so I have sourced another 4 speed box from mk2spares that is going to be fitted mid September.
I fixed a little leak it had in the rear panel by the light. I cleaned out a load more soil i found around the lights. I touched up a few little bits of paint...
She has been to the National Meet and also to the Retro Rides Gathering today.
Im not going to push it and go to anything else as the gearbox is leaking a fair bit and although its getting changed I dont fancy having to be recovered home so will have to be patient until it goes it to the Garage.

Had a bit of a break through this week... with a bit of help from facebook group members i have finally got my horn to work!!
It was given a temp fix for the MOT but then broke again and Ive finally found out the reason it wouldnt work... the spring on the column was missing so it wasnt connecting the earth!

im a little bit further in the washer jet saga now... i know the stalk is working and the relay is clicking, the washer pump is new so there must be a problem with the wiring from the fuse box to the pump...

She is going in to the garage on 13th so will see what I can get done and ticked off! Gearbox is the priority.

After all this, you'll know that car inside out!
Glad you're working through everything.

Finally got my baby back from the garage!

She has had the rear engine mount replaced
Alternator belt replaced
Wiring to positive battery terminal replaced
Rear fog light wiring tested
Rear wiper now working
Front washers now working
Clutch was changed
Gearbox Changed for a second hand replacement which unfortunately is noisy!! Its been flushed twice but still noisy, think its the input shaft bearing... very very annoying after I just spent the best part of a grand on parts and labour!!

Ive recently had to be using the Golf as my daily, she really stepped up and has done all the school runs, shopping etc.. im always getting comments on her as well which is nice.
I eventually got round to changing the wing ariel, it was seized so i changed it for a manual one...

the other job i finally got round to doing was the speedo... changed it over as it has never worked. For the first time since ive owned her she now clocks up miles haha! I did change the clocks for ones that were 3k too much so its probably worked it self out about now....

The months of daily use has really not helped the gearbox situation... the noise doesnt bother me but its started leaking now and started to get difficult when its warm to get reverse so i need to sort this ASAP.
