Well it’s been a while since I’ve been active on here . Some of you will know that I have a k reg white 16v 5door . Rewind about 10 years and I sold my mk2 gti 8v 3 door in pearl grey to make room for the k reg 16 valver I currently still own.. I’ve got various different cars / project on the go but wasn’t actively looking for another mk2 . However the other day I came across a car which just pulled at my heart strings and with in 24 hours of reading the advert I was driving back to Cornwall from London in my new purchase . A j reg 16v 5 door in pearl grey . She’s far from perfect but a nice project to get stuck into over the next couple years . Having basically finished the white mk2 I’ve missed the excitement of sourcing parts required etc so here I am again second time round . I’ll try and post some pics to show you .
Hi Dale, good to have you back. Looking forward to seeing it.
Welcome back mate!
Welcome looking forward to the journey update posts.
Thanks guys . I’m looking forward to getting it sorted . Feel bad I’ve not been on here for so long and it’s took this car to get me to post again. Just need to learn how to post pics again . It’s all changed . Last time I was using photo bucket !! That’s all gone now hasn’t it lol
Yeah, photobucket isn't what it used to be.
I've been using Flickr in recent years, seems to work well
So with marks advice on postimage I’m having a go with a pic or two . If it works this was on the return trip when I collected it a couple weeks ago

So after the deal had been done and a deposit placed I left Cornwall about 3:00pm and set off for London with my brother. The car literally got advertised 11:00pm the night before . Fortunately when I got there about 9:00pm the golf was as described and the deal was done . We drove a few hundred yards to the local KFC for some food and I taxed the golf to be on the safe side ( 29th nov grrrr) we then set off for Cornwall and with in a few hundred metres picked up a flat . So yeah did the whole journey back to Cornwall on the space saver . After many road closures, coffee breaks and ages spent just getting out of Croydon we finally got home at 6:00 am Wednesday morning. A quick one and a half hour sleep then off to work. Would I change it , not at all. All part of the story for me . The golf ran brilliantly after doing barely any miles over the last few years . A big thank you to my brother for pulling an all nighter with me . I’ll try and keep this thread up to date with my progress.

Mine is registered J833KLY so I'd guess your'a was supplied by Collingdale in London. I had some new plates, rear screen sticker and tax disk holder made up as copies to the originals.
Welcome back Dale… The wheels are a pleasant change …sure we will see some more pics and updates….

Agreed, I think you should have space savers all round.
First thing i had to do was take a brave pill and go looking in the common areas . I’d had a poke around the turrets when I viewed it but was still nervous removing the covers. Fortunately all is looking nice and solid . As is the floors . Only lifted the carpets not fully removed them yet but I will do . No Sign of any water leaks or anything which is also nice to see .

This sounds interesting who did you get to make them up ? I’ll check where mine came from ? What colour is yours out of interest mate ?
A member did the artwork and Pukka Designs made them up.
However times have changed and getting the correct reg font is a problem. Mine are really show plates but are exactly the same as the originals !
I believe there are some that will still make them up. ;)
Thanks for the info Andy . I’ve checked and mine was actually supplied by Contim in Harrow. It’s still got the original dealer plate on the rear . So should be able to use that to get a front and window sticker made up
These peeps made up some plates for the moped … you can talk to them …https://www.myshowplates.com/
Managed to squeeze another car in my small unit ( 4 cars in a double garage ) with all this rain we’ve had I’ve noticed the golf was getting wet inside . So I’ve put it indoors to strip the interior , needs a new headliner anyway . Then before I sorn it at the end of the month I’ll take it outside to check where the waters coming in . Always so much easier with the interior out .all needs a good clean anyway .

Took a few bits off to do at work . Seem to have been able to bring the red on the grill back with a gentle polish . Before

It’s all these little free jobs that I love doing what made me go for this car .
What did you use for the water bottle? A dishwasher tablet in a bucket of hot water did wonders for mine.
I forgot that one . I just used some mould remover and some tfr and kept going back to it . Good job I did it it was full of muck inside
What a journey to collect it! Looks like it was worth it though and appears solid in the right places which is a massive bonus. Its goo to see a few new build threads appearing, I find it motivates me to get outside and work on mine.
Well with the interior out I have tested to see where the water is coming in. Everywhere pretty much . The guy I bought the car off never used it and just garaged it for 3 years so that’s why it was so dry when I picked it up .so we’ve got the usual door membranes. All 4 . Rear tail lights . Rear badge grommets.
So all pretty easy fixes . But also the sunroof is leaking . I’m checking that out tomorrow ,
Drains etc. anyway interior is now pretty much out

Nice , headliner though ??
Headliner was dead and the sunroof leak just finished it off. I’m going to try one of the ones on eBay . Heard good things about them . Headliner world one unless anyone knows better ?
I can vouch for the headliner world ones.
Fitted one to mine, went in a treat and fitted well around the A B and C pillars too.
Thanks Dave that’s good to know .
I treated myself to a cheap wet vac . Karcher Wd2 plus . Was only £50 in the sale .with a cheap b and m stain remover and a bowl of hot water we turned this

And that’s once it had dried . Going to have another go but well pleased with the result.
The water was black
That looks great!
I've bought one of those Vax ones to do the same.
So far I've done our upstairs carpet, but I haven't had the chance to getting around to the car!
