Title: Mk2 GTi 16V coolant leak
Post by: VWSimon on August 02, 2023, 02:48:21 PM
Hi all,

Just joined this site as am the proud owner of an oak green 1990 16V GTI.

I have a coolant leak coming from the passenger side of the engine block just below and further forward of the distributor.

Appears to be a faulty flange that needs changing and probably the rubber hose going into it.

Two questions please;

1. Can someone direct me to the correct parts - I've been google'ing but I keep being directed to what I think is the wrong flange.

2. Is this an easy home job or should I go to a mechanic (I'm reasonably proficient but have only really worked on air-cooled VW'a) and don't really know my way around this engine just yet.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Simon

Hi Simon,

Welcome to the club!

First off, do you have an early or late 16v?
As this will dictate what flange you have.
I believe they're either plastic or metal.

It's not uncommon for these to leak, the flange can warp and the o ring usually goes hard and stops sealing.

Is it like any of these?

Hi Monkey,

Thanks for the reply. It is a 1990 GTi 16V, I'm pretty sure the flange is black plastic. I've put some photos on the facebook page seeking some help.

Thanks.

Yes, does look like one of those (i.e. only one in and out on the flange).

From what I can see from looking in the engine one of these appears to be the one.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and take it off alone with the hose I'll change too so I can have a proper look?

Appreciate the info on the website haven't seen this one before

A top tip when shopping at Autodoc is if you use their phone app rather than the website, it's generally cheaper.

And the discount changes daily. So if you're not in a rush, stick the parts you want in your basket and log in each day till you get a good deal. You see 41% off fairly regular, I think I've only seen 45% off once or twice, maybe Christmas and New year.

Dave missed a trick, here's a £10 coupon if you do order:

Don't forget, you'll also want the O ring to go with it.

As Tim said, use the phone app, it's cheaper, but word of warning, it all comes from Germany, so can take up to two weeks.

Very useful site though, I literally rebuilt my 8v using it.
