Yes please if you have any details that would be great.

Also, interested in outdoor ones.  Just wondering what people’s recommendations where.

I've got an indoor one on mine and it fits really well.

They do outdoor ones as well

I had this one for a birthday present,  fleece type lining and a shiny outer face

If getting one you need a breathable one so it doesn't sweat underneath.
Also one that has decent tie down straps, one I had previously the wind would catch it and lift it or it would make constance rustling noise.

I've got a 'luxury' one from Halfords after I had my paint done, to keep the workshop cats from scratching the paint.
Was about £60, felt lined breathable, works a treat.

If you want a custom fit then these are the ones

https://www.specialisedcovers.com/

When I ordered my outdoor one they needed to know whether it was a big bumper model, it is so closely fitting. Soft lining and breathable/waterproof outer. They do great indoor ones too.

Not cheap.

I have had 2 of these now and both have allowed water through meaning the felt lining inside and therefore the roof of the car was wet when I took them off? Apparently these are great but I have decided it is best to leave it off than it is to hold water against the car. I definitely made sure the car was bone dry before putting it on so I'm not sure why the 2 that I have had have been useless? 🤔

I've only ever used mine in the workshop, never outside, as every one I've ever seen has been ripped to shreds in a matter of weeks. Not sure the Halfords I have one was marked up as an 'external', can't remember now as it was well over a year ago I bought it.

Still keeps the cats at bay though...

This is mine. It seems to keep it dry, as I've put my hand underneith when it's been raining and it was dry.
I purchased mine from this ebay seller. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STORMFORCE-4-Layer-Car-Cover-VW-Golf-inc-GTi-Mk-2-to-Mk-4/113284883034?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I had exactly the same issues with 2 halfords one after reading loads of positive reviews. My mate swears by the stormforce ones but ive never used one. Apparently the only exterior car cover you should ever buy according to him 🤷‍♂️

I'd be interested in what people think of these Stormforce ones, as I'll be storing one outside soon too.

I thought I'd update this thread as I know it's a hot topic in winter.
So as it's mid summer now, I've been doing some research as I'm hoping to get a winter cover ready before I need it.

Whilst not ideal, I do store my car outside and it's not 100% watertight despite my best efforts (but this isn't the place to discuss that).

I have a shortlist of 3 products (price quoted at time of writing):

Every Car Covered - WeatherPro £164
https://www.everycarcovered.com/products/vw-golf-mk2-mk3-mk4-1983-2003-weatherpro-car-cover

Storm Stormforce - Outdoor £187.96
https://www.stormcarcovers.co.uk/products/vw-car-covers

Richbrook - Stormguard £195
https://richbrook.co.uk/product/stormguard-volkswagen-tailored-4-layer-outdoor-car-covers/

All of the above are a 4 layer all year cover: robust outer layer, padded second layer, soft inner lining with waterproof/breathable membrane. They are all listed as the same product for Mk1 to Mk4, so clearly not perfectly tailored to a Mk2. Additional straps and locking kits are available for extra £££.

All three companies produce other covers, there are winter only ones which are cheaper as 2 layer option. I imagine they would sweat in warm days and break down in direct sunlight. Also indoor covers and other accessories.

The specs, descriptions and reviews for all 3 products are very similar.
The most expensive, the Richbrook one has sone Auto Express awards, 2021 and 2022.
The cheapest, Every Car Covered seems like the 'underdog', I get the impression it's a smaller family run business and this make me feel like even though it's cheaper the quality would be no less, they're just trying to stay competitive.

On this occasion Trust pilot offers no help, Every Car Covered (3.5) and Storm Car Covers (3.1) but out of only 4 reviews each it's easy to get bad results when a couple of people have a negative experience. For Every Car Covered on of the negative comments is about the customer service not the product.
Richbrook scored 3.8 but out of only have 3 reviews and all for different products.

There is another company that offers tailored fit specific to a Mk2 but other than the link below I'm not going any further with that as that price is just too much for me.
Specialised Covers - Stormshield £249

I used a carcoon outdoor cover which was lent to me so don't know what it cost. I have to say I found it worked extremely well the only problem I found when it snowed it could not take the weight and sagged. The car was always dry whatever the weather. It did get blown about by the wind but the car was very small an mg midget and the cover was medium sized so it never touched the car.

New, the smallest outdoor CarCoon is about £450, I gather there would also be a running cost as they're powered aren't they?

Carcoon are excellent- but costly to buy.  We were lucky to get a secondhand outdoor one.

Running costs are extremely low, pennies per day.

carcoons run of the cars battery or a battery charger.

carcoons run of the cars battery or a battery charger.

It’s has its own power socket but also has cables that connect to car battery, that help keep it inflated if needs be.

I've had my car under cover for a couple of weeks now.

In the end I went with ...

Quote
Every Car Covered - WeatherPro £164
https://www.everycarcovered.com/products/vw-golf-mk2-mk3-mk4-1983-2003-weatherpro-car-cover

... as it was cheaper.
It’s a bit baggy, it’s designed to for mk1 to 4, and clearly there’s a size difference between models.

But although baggy it’s a good tight fit where it counts, with the elastic around the bottom. Mine is a big bumper model.

I had shows two weeks running and didn’t need to use the car in between. So since it was clean for the first show I decided to keep the bird poop and tree sap from my neighbours tree off it. But as it happens we’ve had some pretty stormy weather so glad I put it on.

I can’t imagine the other two suppliers I looked at would have been much different.

The one draw back I can think of, is out of sight, out of mind. Every time I look out the window or go out of the house it would make me smile seeing the Golf. Obviously it's still very much there but it's hidden. Odd how that plays tricks with you. It's also prevented nipping out and doing the quick 15-30 min jobs. Even though it takes a few seconds to remove and refit it feels like effort - as a result, I've done a lot less National Meet prep than I would normally do.

The rain this past week also hasn't helped with enthusiasm to clean and polish though. But at least I know when I unwrap it Friday morning it should still be clean enough and will be dry inside.

How has it handled the wind, do you have additional straps.

Absolutely no issues at all.

There are 2 straps that go under it. They have a clip at either end so in theory you can disconnect them, lay them on the ground and drive the car over it so they're in position to be clipped to the cover. I haven't tried but I suspect this would work on gravel, and that I have to turn and reverse. It's tricky with the car low but I just chuck the strap as far under as I can and reach from the other side. But I only do this occasionally, if I'm expecting bad weather. It's usually not strapped up, and it's fitted well enough with the elastic under the bumpers and around the wheels. I think the mirror pockets help keep it in place too.

The car is clean and dry and ready for when I want it.
The down side is, when I just want to pop to the shops I now take my wife's Mk5 because I can't be bothered to take the cover off.
