Title: 8v & 16v
Post by: rickygolf83 on May 31, 2020, 08:51:49 PM
Copying over from old site.....

Hi,

I thought that with some pretty substantial progress predicted for the coming months I should start my own thread.

I was a member on the old forum also but not much of a picture posting guy as I dont think threads are worthy without pics and updates lol

Various factors have limited my ability to address the issues on my beloved 16v but that will change soon.

So her goes

Bought this in September 08 after selling a vento vr6

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/c96e6576.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/c96e6576.jpg.html)

Originally it was on 14" castelletes, but a moment of madness saw it rocking the gold ra's.  Bought at 97k full history and every mot from new

A neighbour kindly reversed into it outside my folks house in 09 which resulted in the loss of red stripe on the offside. I sourced a replacement but was far too curly to attempt fitment lol

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/ffd08256.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/ffd08256.jpg.html)

Time passed and the ra's dissappeared after my friend passed the car parked up in Glasgow and thought someone else had the same bad taste in wheels as me but it was my mk2 lol

Replaced by these

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/226708f8.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/226708f8.jpg.html)

Once fitted i realised i had found the best oe wheel in my opinion for the small bumper mk2

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/NewImage.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/NewImage.jpg.html)

It then became apparent due to the terrible ride and tyre squeal that the car needed hit with the lowering stick

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/17ef6e30.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/17ef6e30.jpg.html)

Lowered on jom coilovers, and after 4 years I cannot complain, although the 16v only goes out in the dry and is garaged during the winter....

The main reason for this is due to as time progressed, it became apparent that my shell was suffering form the dreaded rot and needed some serious work.

Being stuck in a flat, and as of 2012 with child also, and not having the option of a space to work on the car myself, i simply could not  justify spending £2k + getting someone to complete the work on my behalf but hopefully in the coming weeks this will change.

The car was broken into in 2013, nothing left in the vehicle cab, an empty water bottle on the floor, but I feel it was opened to steal and then when said thief noticed there was no steering wheel fitted it was pillaged for my beloved tools from the boot

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20140917_134028_zpsuuuolxoa.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20140917_134028_zpsuuuolxoa.jpg.html)

Instead of smashing the window, which i could have replaced with a spare in my cupboard,  they bent the door out far enough to hit the lever and open the door. Bloody raging all my tools were stolen as i had them since i was a young lad and when i worked in a local bus yard. I reshaped the door and it bears this scar today lol

The car went to silverstone from glasgow in summer 2013 to ford fair with no issues over 840 miles but the following year after putting her on ramp at my friends bus garage it became apparent some serious surgery is required.

These are the parts i was aware of from above

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20140917_133951_zpsigw8skqk.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20140917_133951_zpsigw8skqk.jpg.html)

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20140917_134038_zpsk1ja6cy1.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20140917_134038_zpsk1ja6cy1.jpg.html)

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20140917_133956_zpsh5vezrd2.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20140917_133956_zpsh5vezrd2.jpg.html)

There is also work required on both sills, previous welds to mot standard but full replacements not required.

Where the loom passes from the body to the tailgate on the nearside is rotten and the engine needs removed and chassis legs and bay prepped.

In my opinion, the only solution is a complete strip, on a spit and every area addressed with longevity in mind. Why do half a job with all the effort to start any of the above. Anyway, over the coming weeks and months i hope to start this myself.

The car will stop, start and go anywhere without letting you down, but the body is dying around the mechanicals lol

Praying to the restoration gods everynight for the last few years might have paid off and i may be blesses with a garage of my own, and as its the only car i have kept as long and given the pedigree it had, it needs saved.

My 3 year old loves going in "the speedy car" and this alone makes the valver all that more important to me. A re-shell is not n option.

Anyway, heres a few more pics, the last one taken 2 week ago. It cleans up well but shine can hide a multitude if sins

So this pic takes the thread in a new direction. Well, really i have thousands of pics on various sd cards and phones that could expand the thread but not to hand sadly

The red mk2 was my 1st vw. I bought it for £500 in September 06 when i was facing a driving ban for driving well in excess of the 70 limit in my old civic coupe vti.

I had F151, kept my licence and sold the civic. Recouped almost evey penny i had in it and bought the vento vr6 in june 07. Sold the vr6 in august 08 and bought the valver in sept 08 as said earlier.

I started a new job in glasgow, watched crash tests for the mk2, mk3 and mk4, so made the heartbreaking but sensible decision, given i was doing rush hour daily driving to sell the 8v. It left my company in February 09 and was never seen again. Replaced absolutely loads of parts on it, including clutch and gearbox etc...  and it left my company for hopefully a happy life elsewhere in its original small bumper p-slot form...

Its owner turned up on scottishvag in summer 11, and i made contact with him. Car was saved from death, had done nearly 40k since i sold it, had been broken into, maybe stolen and was set for certain death.

Codgie, hes on here too has some pics on a thread that  i will try copy onto here.  There also pics of both my valver and his in summer 11 down greenock esplanade somewhere.

So fast forward til summer 15.  I had said to Codgie if he was selling to give me 1st refusal as the car meant so much to me and is an absolute survior mk2, more on that later.

I wa on nightshift and went onto Scottishvag to see it forsale with a knackered engine, and with two local breakers expressing interest. I could have cried. I messaged him and said give me 24hrs and i would try pull some strings to buy her back.

A quick call to my best mate and the deal was done. Since my ownership it had been fitted with big bumpers, coils, 90spec red ultra violet interior and bbs rz's. Plus an exhaust that would wake the dead. That will be replaced before it goes anywhere near a mot station lol

Saved for £400

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/Screenshot_2015-06-07-19-35-22_zps4ragltsu.png) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/Screenshot_2015-06-07-19-35-22_zps4ragltsu.png.html)

Pics from the add

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20151223_200607_zpsgt5k1our.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20151223_200607_zpsgt5k1our.jpg.html)

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20151223_200539_zpsv4ootfgn.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20151223_200539_zpsv4ootfgn.jpg.html)

Safe and sound and dry in my friends work. Hopefully work will start soon on her also

I posted an add on here last summer and Chippy Gti sold me this

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/Screenshot_2015-06-21-21-53-10_zpsgb8nfmrh.png) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/Screenshot_2015-06-21-21-53-10_zpsgb8nfmrh.png.html)

2.0 8v and everything in the pic for £150

Collected from slough on way home from ford fair in my 1.8 20vt mk4. Madness looking back on it lol
I must add that performance on acceleration and braking was not notably compromised given the extra load with 2 passengers up front.

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20150802_185009_zps1pvbb6kn.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20150802_185009_zps1pvbb6kn.jpg.html)

We got back to glasgow safely

Mk4 being unloaded, you can see the mk2 to the right in this pic. This was its 1st home after saving

(http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab78/rickygolf83/20150803_204110_zpsm1kfxu5p.jpg) (http://s851.photobucket.com/user/rickygolf83/media/20150803_204110_zpsm1kfxu5p.jpg.html)

So that brings me kind of up to date. Pics really just to build a picture, as i just lurk on here lol

I also have two very reliable workhorses that are a mk4 gti 1.8t i bought in nov 09 for £2200 with recaros and a mk4 gt tdi 130 i bought for £2k in November 2012. Getting a bit long in the tooth now, but for the money they cannot be beat. I wanted to change the 1.8t for a mk5 gti but a house is a much higher priority and with the amount of knowledge i have learned from these cars including vag-com, vagtacho and an nvq in mk4 golf doors and their failings i cannot fault them. They owe me nothing and they are ran with minimal outlay

The 1.8t on 125k and tdi on 133k. Original clutches, flywheels and turbos. Bought standard. They do the daily duties to work and ferrying my son about with ease

So a wee bit of work carried out on the 8v over the weekend;

Old knackered 1.8 8v engine out, welded bulkhead,  a wee blow over the bay to freshen it up and protect it for another few years. 2.0 8v in situ, wiring and plumbing in still to do.

Here's a few pics;

Thought the servo and master cylinder were knackered, but on inspection after a quick rub down and paint they are perfectly serviceable.

Getting back to work on it friday and over next weekend hopefully. A few necessary parts required and a few bits of welding underneath, but at least the 2.0 is now in.

My mate is the master tech, painter and general mechanical god, so i can only take a small amount of credit for the work.

The red mk2 was bought for peanuts (£500) in 06 due to the poor condition of the nearside rear corner. Been in a shunt at some point and absolutely packed full of filler, even the sunroof drain exit was covered and the pipe ran to nowhere lol when i owned 1st tim round, the rear footwell used to fill up, once level with the tunnel lol eventually traced and plumbed into a bottle  The area was heated and beaten out as best as possible. My mate isn't bodywork trained but he's done a sterling job. Owe him big time.

Last Friday 21st, work began again. My mate needs the golf out of his work to clear room for his dads mgb and his escort s1, as his folks house isbeing sold. So a blessing for me as it's getting closer to back on the road now  :D

Nurburgring sticker fitted by one of the owner after me is going,  sadly cant be avoided due to the work on that corner. hopefully that doesn't dissapoint anyone.

When i owned the 8v originally in 2006 it had no radio installed. Got one out a jetta in the local scrappys for £5 including the cage. Dried it out and it worked perfectly and was still fitted when i sold it.

When i bought it back there was no tunes fitted, and the jbl 6x4's have been removed. Not checked if the dash jbls are still there.

After working on the car friday i was looking for various bits on ebay and spotted the stereo i had originally.

Won it for £7.50 delivered lol

Radiator cowling painted, just a quick tidy up in satin black and now mounted. Had to borrow the brackets from my 16v thats off the road.

Brakes have been overhauled with new copper lines front to the rear beam, meyle 22mm master cylinder, black diamond grooved 16v discs and yellow stuff pads up front, mk4 calipers, brembo discs and pads at the rear, using goodridge braided conversion hoses.

Braided lines came with the front calipers but are the wrong fitment. Too small at the connector to the hardline and the adaptor that must have been fitted has been left on the car they were removed from   and the standard ones ordered last week are wrong too

My mate made up the hardlines and i fitted the rest while he was doing the back corner !

Ordered last night a toad ai606 with tilt and proximity sensor, a momo boss, NRG quick release, front flexis, longer wheel bolts for the ats cups and a bosch s4 battery.

Hopefully will be painted tonight or tomorrow.

Fit the alarm when the heater matrix is being done. Fingers crossed!

Exhaust, handbrake cables, new fuel filter and new tank straps fitted today along with a few other odd jobs
Moved under its own steam tonight.
Full steam ahead tomorrow and friday, needs to be at mine by close of play friday night! Fingers crossed!

*** someone asked what tank straps i used ***

Thanks guys, cant believe its 48hrs from coming home now  :jackson:

I bought mk2 ones from clasic-vw before christmas. Just got black ones as i thought chrome underneath would be inappropriate given the nature of the build

http://www.classic-vw.co.uk/mk2-golf-fuel-tank-strap-kit-1h0201650-1h0201653f-1h0201654c-14878-p.asp

The final push started yesterday after i returned from holiday, to hopefully get the car roadworthy and mot'd by the end of the week

Heater box and matrix refitted, exhaust mounted, grey carpets replaced with a new black carpet from vw heritage, power steering filled up and bled, coolant filled.....

At this point a few gremlins appeared; no temp gauge working on the dash, oil temp reading 160 at rest and the cooling fan melted...

So with a spare fan from my mates mk1 build hooked up to test,  it stopped boiling over and successfully burped itself. Was touch and go, really didn't look good at the time. New fan will arrive tomorrow

Took sender from old engine and changed spade connector and now have oil temp. Water temp not working still and no broken wires from the bay, so that goes on the list along with cv boot, mount bumpers, new wipers, fit alarm, seats...

Few pics

I desperately need the grill that fits above the lower valance. Heritage do one but would prefer oem. If anyone can help, i need it by end of the week, let me know. Thanks

Its ready for mot, but still plenty wee jobs once its passed!

Thinking i should have gone for 45 profile tyres but will be a bit more refined with the 50's

Scorpion backbox that came with the engine will be going, probably get a standard one

Well it failed on a seized caliper offside, emissions, headlight aim and play in steering column

As it was sorn and no mot, couldnt take it a test drive, so the caliper was only found when getting tyres fitted en route  :frustration:

New caliper arrived at garage (no time for me to take it home) and i took the column off my 16v

Should know in a few hours

Got stopped by the cops about 10 miles from the border as it pinged up last mot expired 2013. Guys were sound, but lucky i had the screen shot i posted yesterday  :lol no:

Arrived home safe and sound! Car performed perfectly over the 740 miles, apart from a small leak out of a rust hole on the gearbox end cap, she retained all her fluids and required no top up. Supposed 39mpg on the mfa but i'll take that with a pinch of salt! Lol

This pic was taken as we drove in to classic ford. Its making me think the subframe and wishbones i fitted that came with the engine might be mk3 items as there appears to be quite a bit of tuck at the rear and none at the front. Any way i can confirm either way?

I jumped the gun a bit with the 1000miles in two weeks, clicked over last night on way to work.

Hopefully fit oem style exhaust and gearbox end cap later today or tomorrow.

Gave it a wee clean. Amazing what sins wax and back to black can distract the eye from!

Well since photobucket has killed my thread there actually hasn't been much to report.

Car has been my daily driver on and off since my tdi decided to kill its gearbox at the end of july, and has done herself proud. Strange having the most reliable car in the fleet being a 29 year old mk2!  :D

Raised the car up in order to get the tracking done before going to retrorides gathering, 3 coils moved no bother but of course one put up a hell of a fight as expected! Car drives so much better now, actually takes a corner and is a lot comfier now its not scraping off the tarmac

Managed the journey from glasgow to Shelsley Walsh for the gathering and home almost without fault.

After 664 faultless miles, I stopped to drop my mate off then she wouldn't start. Had to bump start by pushing the F plate mk2 down a fairly post Street at midnight; i am sure the curtains were twitching

Turns out alternator isn't charging, so collected a new regulator today (valeo unit so one i had spare didnt fit) and hopefully back on the road again tomorrow

Will try fix the thread when i get a chance at somepoint soon

Still not got round to fixing the photos.

8v through its test, had to borrow the wheels from the 16v, and a front strut!

Been using it daily on and off in the good weather, it's great when it stops raining for a bit up here!

Dry roads up here today so had the mk2 out for a spin.

Definitely needs a wee electrical service and a good detail.

The starter i fitted from the old engine to replace the one that came with the engine after it started to stick is now sticking. Planning on getting one of them recond.

So with the weather playing ball for a change up here, and with a well needed day off, i advised the mrs that no matter what, i am cleaning the mk2.....

Poor car was filthy, faded and in need of a few hours elbow grease.

Plastics haven't been treated yet, going to try heat gun them this time [emoji1696]

My Meguiars wax let me down on Monday when cleaning the vr6, looked like i had used butter on it [emoji31] so used an Autoglym set my father in law gave me. Super Resin polish worked okay, as did the sealant but i need fresh wax asap(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190227/49686d744d298ab5bb7d5438ce31f50e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190227/c93a1e2b8e2600bd9e7cbcc18b71c6b3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190228/9bbc5046b611a3f4ecb5cfb5cfc965f4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190227/08a0f8e2b85f59152a204f06ad97e226.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190227/f3f404fe63f2b2eb9df8eef80ca06bae.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190228/b4cdc25cab89f60be9993b2d975ca620.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190228/c95dbc27a419ac63fe5caab115a5c10c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190228/3046aeae68ea47057c114690cb0bb78c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190228/81e80d13d4b53547924d4942c0ff3810.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190228/4ac2d77b9f5fa5082affe51d2dae80b8.jpg)

Not long back from retrorides weekender in the 8v.

Not a single issue apart from the horn doing its own thing during the last leg of the journey. Thanks guys, it has been slightly neglected of late, bought a nova to put back on the road and a vr6 mk3.

But in prep for the retrorides trip the golf received 4 toyo proxes tr-1's which i can rate highly after testing them this weekend,  new lift pump, coil, +ve battery cable, coolant change, oil pressure sensor, fuel pressure regulator, plugs, distributor, rotor arm, timing, fan and power steering belts, cv boot and window regulator. That better keep her happy lol

Put the lower grill and chin spoiler on before the trip too

01/11/2019;  WORK ON THE 16V BEGINS.

On Monday this week i received a call from my mechanic mate, not unusual for him to call being one of my best mates, but he called to say that the bodyshop chap in his work was looking for something to do over the winter evenings, and my pal had suggested welding up my 16v.....

So after 3 years off the road, she left mine last night to go for some life saving surgery! Up top she looks good, underneath not so much.

Repairs will be started from the rear forward, so vw heritage were happy to relieve me of £200+ for the relevant panels lol

More updates to come hopefully ....

Today interior was removed, fuel tank dropped etc...

A few areas of known concern, and a few new areas of concern but on the whole not as bad as it could have been.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191104/f570b54905b419acd35c55f61df23096.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191104/68fbf2bd78659ef5c062c3114203c90f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191104/6edb67a7946dc99397e337a24e753a42.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191104/fd664ef8d74fef1b8a8f11301d1a41a4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191104/1e9b870a87128ac07020cd8063f1c919.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191104/dea6b5f1969374b8eea227d6e8b60fc4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191104/49b31b639fb2ac3061c840faf37d5928.jpg)

Now i have a work around for updating pics, here we go....

Monday 4th of November my first box of goods from vw heritage arrived;

Rear lower panel, both corners, both inner and outer arches, 2 sills, front jack point stumps and fuel filler neck mount.

Work commenced at the rear

Now that the bay was painted, work began on preparing the bay and the engine to go back in.

Servo was stripped and painted, new grommet for vacum pipe and 22mm master cylinder fitted.  New copper brake pipes made up and a Goodridge braided line kit with mk4 rear hoses.

Common sense and a very heavy clutch pedal prompted a new clutch, release bearing, rod and main seal being fitted, I bought a new "finger" from gsf with the clutch but the quality was garbage and old one retained as it was in good nick.

Friction plate wasn't at crisis point after 105k, and its had a fairly hard time since I have owned it!

Timing belt and tensioner replaced, I did not change the pump as it is genuine, spinning freely and replaced in the last few thousand miles in my ownership.

I would really like to have had the block painted while engine is out, but as my mate and his work are doing my a favour, I couldnt take the piss and slow things down even further getting that done.  :-?

Pic of bay with flash first!

So with a lot of effort to post pics these days, i will continue the story.......

Servo was cleaned up and given a nice layer of primer then I think Gloss black, new 22.2mm master cylinder and all new lines front to back.

Radiator was replaced by me in 2011 but one of the tanks had cracked ever so slightly and weeped. So alu rad sourced, cowling painted and lacquered. Old minging parts living to fight another day!
