Title: Project Grandad - Strip down, inspection and clean
Post by: makers_mk2 on July 06, 2020, 08:55:44 PM
My friend and I, both mk2 Golf veterans have purchased a new mk2 for a long term project.

Introducing our new Jade Green 1986 Type 19 GL with just 64k on the clock. The engine runs like a sewing machine - so much so my friend thought I'd turned it off when I came to a stop on the test drive!

The car looks good on the face of it, but closer inspection has revealed a few crusty bits.

We agreed a price and although the car hadn't moved more than 5 miles in 15 years, it made the 240 mile journey home without a hitch aside from some carb icing on the M3 and it cutting out as a result when pulling into Fleet services! A KFC later and the Weber had thawed nicely and continued the rest of the journey with no issues.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Looks pretty decent and unmolested for an early car.

Well after a bit of poking around it has been established that the rear end is in such a bad state of repair, having had 3 or 4 bad repairs carried out in the past, including a rusty edge along the boot floor to rear panel, that the best course of action will be to buy an entire rear section. May opt for the Heritage one that includes the rear light surrounds, or if there's one available, an entire cut of the rear section of a car and weld it on.

Next job was to lift the carpets and see what nasty surprises lay in wait. Fortunately the floor is solid! One less job at least.

My friend and I had a clear plan in our heads when we set out to buy this car, but after the journey back our rose tinted glasses clouded our judgement as we are quite fond of the car and engine. There's no rush, so may run it as it is and enjoy it for a while whilst we make the final decision.

Here's a picture of the floor pan, at least!

Looks like a decent base car with very low mileage.
Interested to hear your plans for the future?

It's solid in all the right places. Sills, arches, A Pillars (from what we can see by shining a torch in there) jacking points and floorpans. It's just that rear end that's a let down.

Does anyone have a picture of how the rear end should look, as I seem to remember the rear panel of early ones were different to late ones?

Have a look at this thread - https://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/clubforum/index.php?topic=324.0.  No VW badge in the middle and a smaller badge with the Volkswagen script on the left of the panel.

The non centre badge and different exhaust gap I think was on the earliest of cars , yours is a later model and might have had a centre badge?? Or it might have had a little rear shunt not properly repaired a few years back?

Back on the the mk2 today.
Today the strip down began.

Time to remove 34 years of grot and human slime.  :o

Seats removed. They'll be wet vac'd shortly. Dreading to think what colour the water comes out. I think Covid was the least of my worries on the 3 hour journey home...

Carpets vacuumed, with the onlooking cat.

Carpets out and (thankfully rust free) floor plan vacuumed and cleaned

Don't do mud flaps, kids. They suck balls and rot your arches.
In the bin they go. Caught them before things got too severe.

The one good door membrane!

Front carpets out. No rust, but a lot of grossness and an apparent leak from somewhere! Fortunately it's not rusted through.

Then weather stopped play. I guess we'll find out where that leak came from!

Question: Quite a bit of the chrome trim is in this condition, can it be restored?

The Gti red stuff is like rocking horse poo, but think you should be able to get new chrome strip from somewhere... the car looks pretty good ...
Eddypeck has produced a little leak finder checklist

Yea the black plastic side trims and bumpers are generally ok. The bumpers may need a retexture from someone who knows what they're doing, so would like to keep them, rather than buying potentially rubbish 2nd hand replacement ones. Or extortionately scene taxed ones. Will just have to measure the diameter of the chrome strip to order new.

Trim restore time!
A spot of Gtechniq C4 and the (what was grey) trim is now looking as good as new! Except the chrome, as I've run out of Autosol  :'( .
Oh and the rear bumper is pretty ruined. Looks like it's been reversed into multiple fence posts, as it has multiple dents all across it and doesn't sit quite right. It's also missing the top strip of chrome.

I think we've struck gold. A few minor scabs where I think the underside has caught on the farm track where the car was based for the last 15 years, but nothing scary at all and should be easily treatable.

Now time for the magic tricks. Paint marks, be gone!

Wow, this brings back memories... I'd a jade green metallic 8v GTI way back in the late 80's / early 90's.

Went for a dealer service in Belfast and never came back, someone decided to petrol bomb the garage. There were Quattro's and countless other's lost!

Ironically I'd a silver 1.8 GL 5-Door, otherwise identical to yours as a courtesy car when it happened... got to use it for a bit longer than intended as a result.

My recollection is that it was every bit as quick as the GTI only more comfy, left a good impression.

Got me looking through some old photos, unusually I can't find a 'before' of it as I took pics of all my cars back then, but here's an 'after'.

I remember I'd put some 14" Fondmetal 7 or 9 spokes on her, you can just about see the molten blobs in the photo.

Still sort of green, though I think that's more the shade of super heated steel!

Good luck with the project, looking great so far.

Time to remove some human slime, grot and dust that's been building up for the last 34 years.

We're not interior detailers by any means, but a good wash with soap, baby wipes and a wet vac later it has come up really well. And is at least no longer a bio-hazard! The carpets are in great shape for 34 years old too.

Another thing that was a bit odd (and irritating) was the boot only opened about 1/2 height. So made boot access very awkward.

New boot struts bought and fitted and it opens like it should now. Turns out the old ones were too short! Greased up the pin for good measure too.

Time for some more cleaning, this time in the form of the seats.

Everyone loves a pic of brown water after a wet vac, so I hope you're fulfilled by this!

Hard to determine the difference its made as velour hides the dirt well! But judging by the water it's certainly made a difference. Less farts and poo particles embedded in them now.

It's been a while, but there have been some nice little updates on the little Mk2.

First, new sunroof wind deflector. Will still spruce up to make it pukka.

Next step, sticky cold air flap in the air box was contributing to carb icing issues - even in July.

I am not a painter by any stretch of the imagination and have a habit of getting impatient and applying it too heavily, but I resisted and it's come up pretty well. Some pitting still present in the worst affected areas, but as that's hidden I'm not overly concerned. It's still better than before!

All back together and looks much better. Amazing what few hours of graft achieves. Shame the sticker on the rocker cover was lost, as I liked that. But I much prefer a satin black rocker cover to the rusty one.

100% there should NOT be a centre badge on a D reg car. E reg was the change over. In theory you should not have a centre badge on a car with quarter-light front windows (hate to use the type 19) although I have seen a couple of E reg that seem to be cross over cars with a weird mix of early windows, RHD wipers, PB engines and one had a late spec rear panel - although I'm still not convinced that was form factory and suspect a later repair.

The early style rear panel as a repair panel went out of stock quite early on as far as I know*, so a rear end shunt while the car was still fairly new (2 or 3 years maybe) could have seen a replacement with a genuine VW later spec panel. Knowing VW they kept the same part number so if you called up and asked for a panel you just got what was available.

* or repair shops were too lazy to order the right parts, I had a 4 year old Mk5 escort that had a front end smash (non-ABS and someone pulled up a bit sharp in front of me, anyway... ). It went into a large main Ford dealer and they put the wrong grill on it and used the wrong shade of grey paint on the stone guard areas.

Not to worry, about the sticker...

Brilliant, thanks! Will order that and fit it for the OEM touch

Eddypeck, we have ordered a replacement repair panel (pictured)

But we'll probably cut it up and fit the correct badges so we can have the rear end period correct. We didn't think it was right the way it is!

Thats's excellent and definitely the right thing to do.

It might be controversial but personally, rather than drill the lug holes for the age appropriate badges I would weld up the 3 holes on the right and when you get the right badges I'd cut off the lugs and just stick them on flush rather drill holes.

That's a very good idea. One I think we'll utilise. Thanks.  :)

Some more excessive and probably unnecessary cleaning went on.

Heater matrix out, ready for mk3 replacement unit and flaps to be reconditioned.

So whilst removing the heater matrix, why just stop there?  ;)

And... Lets clean it up and get 35 years of grot off it!

Lovely. More updates coming when I can find the images on my old phone.

You might want to check the panel against the original very closely.
I bought a KLOKKERHOLM pattern rear panel since the "chassis end" bulges showed surface rust bubbles which turned into rotten holes. The panel moulding looked fine but when the welder cut the required patches out the contours didn't match very well...disappointing.

Time to work on the doors.
A lot of gunk (not the good stuff) was sat in the doors after the membranes had perished in all but one of them.

Good to know. Fortunately we have a mate who's a dab hand at welding who owes us a favour, so my just leave him to it and let him suffer the pain whilst we plead ignorance. :D

Oh, got the central locking working again too.

The T piece between the front and rear doors was just sat on its own with the vacuum pipes not connected. A bit of wiggling and in they popped and away we go!

Hehe. I was just tracking back thro your post and you indicate the you might replace the whole panel. If that's the case the difference maybe "lost".
Hopefully all will turn out fine.

Yep, I think we'll just do the whole panel as the boot floor to rear panel has rusted along the seam, you can actually see daylight on the offside corner  :o  so makes sense to cut it all out and start again.

Meanwhile...

The most exciting update yet:

The little GL genuinely surprised us with it's peppy performance, especially the pickup from low revs. It actually made us laugh on the test drive, despite the two of us having owned 200bhp+ Mk2s in the past. However, the little low mileage 1.8 carb lump had more to give.

Time for a wide band kit!

This will allow precise measurements of fuel air mixture levels allowing us to squeeze every one of the 90bhp from the mighty 1.8 carb. This will transform the driveability of this car, increasing performance and economy.

Don't forget to give the dash a good shake whilst its out to get rid of the remnants of heater flap foam.
I also reinforced the dash heater opening which fits over the heater box with modelling plastic sheet stuck with areldite and used diluted PVA to make the 'cardboard' more rigid.

Oh yes, a fair amount of foam has already come out and will be blown out with an air line to clear it out. Would seem a but of a waste of time to have gone to all the trouble of cleaning the dash up and to not ensure there's no foam left.

Hadn't thought of reinforcing the dash heater opening. But that's a good idea. Wonder if I could 3D print something?  :))

Mine was really low tech.
Dash Aperture Reinforcement (https://ibb.co/nQ7ScZm)
You might have to zoom in to see the black plastic card hiding in the shadow.
Think I used 1mm card stuck on the inner of both the long sides. "G cramps" and wood to ensure they set straight/square.

and another thing...I just remembered.
Make sure the two "cardboard" halves of the dash are still glued together. Mine came apart along the front joint so I was never going to get max screen demist on a winter's morning. I used some sealant to fill the gap.
