Title: Building a MK2 16V Rival...
Post by: Sam Stirrup on July 09, 2020, 04:16:12 PM
Hi everyone,

New forum so thought I'd post up some new content.

Some of the more avid users of the forum may remember me from when I had a few Tornado Red Mk2's back in 2012-2014 period.

(https://i.ibb.co/mN8XM27/DSCN3388.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Drp8Svn)

Or more recently with the Audi S6 at the last national meet:

(https://i.ibb.co/MfkkcHq/58622776-10156562592586032-2048089248547995648-o.jpg) (https://ibb.co/ypFF6CL)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlaeSH_L2r8

Well, the C5 S6 is now gone to fund a wedding and house purchases and with the current COVID situation it allowed me to start looking at cars which aren't necessarily used for daily activities.

I spent a long-time annoying Mr & Mrs Mac alongside Ben Straker and the 'The Wagars' about finding the correct MK2 GTI 16V - spent a good while looking before mostly coming across rubbish and projects in my price range.

That is when I came across this, It was on page 65 of Car and Classic; shows you how deep I was into a search of listed cars. It looked relatively clean and promising and had been listed for one day.

It was listed as a 318i Auto Touring - Eagle eyed viewers may notice the M42 with an M50 Coil On plug modification, lurking in the engine bay from a 318is. This means: DOHC 1.8 16V with approx. 134bhp @ 6000rpm and 127lb-ft @ 4600rpm.

This provided an interesting alternative after initially wanting a MK2 GTI 16v. One aspect of promise was that the car was built from a well know 'old skool figure' in the BMW E30 scene - the engine had only 50k miles and was sourced from another well versed E30 member called Andrew Everett who has actually published literature including 'BMW E30 - 3 Series Restoration Bible'. In combination, the body has only covered 81k so I thought it was worth the risk to at least go and view the car. Thread linked below if you're interested in past history:

https://www.e30zone.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=269261

Me and Jasmine made the trip down to Windsor to view that car, in the meantime I had found serious history on the car in regards to the build thread and by googling the registration I had found the picture below. This was when I became worried:

(https://i.ibb.co/jygq9RX/3-D671-EC7-A134-411-D-9-B74-B0-B7-D6-E90-E8-B.jpg) (https://ibb.co/2vgR0N4)

Arrived at the sellers house, the guy was really quite polite and walked me through the E30's history and how much he had driven it etc. It turns out that he is a uni student so had only covered 1700 miles since September 2018 with his dad starting the car and letting it run every week. The car was kept under a cover on the drive way.

I took a few pictures, there was a few things that worried me which are pictured but overall it's solid - all the boot floor is rock solid, carpets are dry, scruttle and windscreen all clean!

These are the bad bits!

(https://i.ibb.co/mvwmYN7/5-D620-EA9-642-D-4905-AFF2-44-A8149-EC293.jpg) (https://ibb.co/tZtSNL5)

However, overall as the seller promised it's fairly clean!

(https://i.ibb.co/mDnGmFf/2764477-E-8958-420-C-AEA5-35528993-DD9-A.jpg) (https://ibb.co/ngXbT8x)

The car drove really well, really very tight, went and stopped well. Only issue was the power steering has been removed which I have in the boot because the pump failed.

The only thing I was disapointed was the little grotty bits pictured and the fact the paint needs full correction - however, seller was willing to negotiate and ended up leaving a deposit!

So picked the car up - made it about 2 minutes, filled up with fuel and it ended up spilling over the forecourt. Attendant wasn't very happy!

Turn's out this one has an overflow, I'm going to keep an eye on this as these E30's are notorious for rotten filler necks. I've checked it and it seems solid but will update. Seller said he would pay for anything that needs doing on that front as he wasn't aware of an issue however I felt a bit sorry for him so graciously declined his offer.

Felt a bit sketchy but pushed on and the car drove the 70 odd miles to Essex perfectly.

I thought then I'd go over to Ali & Jo and show them the new purchase in additon to seeing little Penny and Jenson.

Before investing money into it, I thought it would be wise to drive it around for a bit - went to visit my mate Zach, who you may remember used to have the Jetta in the first post:

Therefore, he took the obligatory first time seeing my car photos!

And back home, ready to go back out to test if all the instrument lights work:

At this point, I've done about 300 miles in the car now and I'm happy to get stuck in.

One thing that is obvious is that the car mechnically; bar the power steering, is very good. It's even had a new clutch about 2000 miles ago.

Although, the main issue of the car is getting it up to my level of cleanliness. The paintwork really needs some love and inside does need tidying up. It's all a project, right?

So, got working on the inside first - been trying to do my disseration during the day so only really have evenings.

The seller said that the rear seats don't fold down - so quickly sorted that - they just needed a little bit of use!

Although FILTHY:

(https://i.ibb.co/jDs2mZS/71674-FEC-8375-4060-96-FA-E17124633-D82.jpg) (https://ibb.co/tDFtgP9)

Now more presentable.

I'm thinking that its actually black dye being removed from the carpet instead of dirt being on the carpet as only M3's got black carpet.

(https://i.ibb.co/bvTYQVr/185469-EF-82-DD-481-A-A234-4-B245-ECA5-C96.jpg) (https://ibb.co/09T1mLf)

Although when cleaning, I found this underneath the seat - dated back BB 2017:

(https://i.ibb.co/VLFFDfs/ECD53-E86-1-A45-48-DB-A549-E6-CBBABBEDFB.jpg) (https://ibb.co/GdZZkzq)

Also - had a broken rear ashtray

(https://i.ibb.co/BqrHfqP/7-ED07-ABF-FF39-4-A3-E-B9-BC-79-FAB701-C6-D4.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Ypy4NpW)

Oddly fitting door card, so took it off and clipped it back in properly. All sorted now.

As you can probably tell from previous photos - I've got a problem with the rear wiper motor. In addition, the rear trim keeps falling out so I've taken it off to not risk losing it although I'll probably order a new one anyway.

My friend runs 'kill all wipers' so wanted measurements for a wiper delete kit and said he would shoot me one out for free - so awaiting the kit, not sure if I'll run it yet or go back to OEM but in any case it's really easy on an E30.

As you can see, Wet vaccumn is in the boot ready to tackle - just awaiting the correct interior cleaners in the post.

However, it had an initial wash just to get it a bit cleaner.

I plan to get paintwork done and full correction completed in coming weeks/months.

Had a present come through the post too - my friend had a spare one and gave it to me for free - so I'll owe him a beer for it at some point. BMW wanted £145 for a new one so thats really helped me out!

More to come soon!

Another interesting development:

The seller previously didnt use the headunit because it never worked properly, he put a new battery in and it came up with 'COD'.

Looked through the history of the car and found a Blaukpunt instruction booklet inside with the code - next issue was that it had no radio signal. Took the headunit out and suprise, suprise, not even attached.

Ordered a ISO to DIN converter with the help of Ben and Drew, plugged it in and now have a working headunit!

I can't believe after the months of texts and links sent of Golfs and words of wisdom from all of us you bloody buy a BMW!  ::)

Joking aside, it's a really nice car and looked great in the flesh when you brought it round. Look forward to the development of this and realising you should have bought a mk2.  ;)

Nothing major to update:

Had some C4 trim restorer out and decided to try it on the scuttle trim.

These will be taken out soon anyway when the car is polished so will go over these again to complete properly!

Also, picking up some new wheels soon!

The correct BBS stamped optional extra 15 x 7 - ET24 - 4x100.

Need a full refurb but these wheels are so difficult to find with the OEM BMW caps!

Just a quick update today.

Went to BMW and got some goodies:

And some new Bosch wipers as the ones on the car looked a bit perished.

(https://i.ibb.co/5x8d1bD/7-F15-ED7-D-5-AEB-4844-8672-92-DF37-BDD575.jpg) (https://ibb.co/jZMd8nK)

And fitted:

Still need to decide on rear wiper delete or fixing the current motor.

Hopefully there will be some 'proper' updates soon.

V8?

I wish! This is supposed to be my 'cheap' car to save for a house and wedding.

There may be a few little surprises in store mind as I won't skimp on it.

I guess we will see the direction it goes but at the moment a V8 isn't in the plans!

I'm sure Jazz will be just as understanding.

Yeah I’m sure lol - going to keep it relatively small to be honest and put the majority of the money towards the property! Just finishing my masters too so once my heart op is completed I can get back up the city and start making some “proper” money again! Hopefully, anyway.

Will be interesting to see if you can get the indicators working. Haven’t seen a Beemer yet where they do... it’s an awesome car and you know I am thinking oem the shizzle out of it and it will be better than any money in a building society ..

Nothing major to update:

Replaced a few bits in preparation for its MOT:

Car passed and is solid as rock underneath - going to look at the exhaust system at some point, most probably a stainless system throughout which looks OEM. Then replace/restore anything else underneath.

So a rear wiper even if not working will tidy that back up, remember how a lay flat wiper on a mk2 seemed a good idea but looked wrong? ... well to some anyhow

I put a longlife S/S exhaust on mine, you're lucky enough yours is older so you can do away with the CAT. Mine was 93 so I had to have one,  that added a good £300 to the cost of the system.

Oh for sure! I’ve got the rear arm to put on, just need to rebuild the motor as it doesn’t park correctly. Going to rebuild the front ones too for preventative maintenance.

How did you find it? Like OEM? Oh, yeah will be deleting the cat - squeeze as much power out as possible!

I'd recommend the Longlife system, sounded and looked good, OEM+ :-)  I remember on my old one years back I had to replace the exhaust and I just put a generic system on. I hated the sound afterwards it was really tinny.

Nothing really to update, been busy applying for graduate schemes, working and sorting the Audi out. I did feel a bit sorry for it sitting there getting all leafy so gave it a quick wash.

I never noticed the cooling ducts next to the fig light before.

Have you seen the recent Mighty Car Mods videos?
They've just done an E30 too!

Cool isn't it. They all have cooling ducts, on lower spec ones they have blanks where the fog lights go.

Little update:

Had a bit of time to have a look at the E30 and sort out some niggly issues.

Firstly, looking at the rear wiper motor - removed because the sweep has its own mind. I've never taken a wiper motor apart before so had to figure it out as I went along.

Investigated by taking apart the motor:

(https://i.ibb.co/MRFVGqD/5-E8-BF020-8-E5-C-4-D22-85-F6-84-F9-BCCC6-E39.jpg) (https://ibb.co/4jhTYBZ)

Rubber block slightly split - although the grease looks really fresh - perhaps someone has been here before!

(https://i.ibb.co/zxbZ9mL/6-AF7-C896-1-B4-F-43-B0-A2-DA-72-F75-C4-C81-D7.jpg) (https://ibb.co/dM6DCf3)

From what I can work out, this rocker is the derivative of the wiper park position - I had to take it on and off a few times to discover this. However, I can't get this rocker to park back at the same position and therefore will land anywhere on this scale once parked. I still need to work out where to go from here because it's quite annoying. As you can see from the picture below, sweep has gone onto the bootlid and scratched the paintwork before so want to avoid this when the car is repainted.

Speaking of repainting, whilst I had the car under the barn under the light I discovered this:

(https://i.ibb.co/LSJQh6b/05-BE971-F-12-CA-489-F-BBDE-64-C782-D839-D6.jpg) (https://ibb.co/H7xNpY1)

I know the the first forum thread listed in the first comment, Mick painted the car which was a bit of a while back so was quite surprised that this came up. Therefore, it looks like the front end is going to bare metal painted at the very least. I need to work out what else is going to be painted as I ideally don't want to spend 6k on painting this.

Back outside - can barley see the blistering unless you're looing for it!

Next job:

The interior light wasn't working when the drivers door was opened. Commonly, this is a door switch which is normally broken.

So had a little look - trim off and speakers out:

(https://i.ibb.co/D4Dpw7w/0-ABFC1-AE-DF4-D-43-CA-981-D-6351569-AE1-B3.jpg) (https://ibb.co/tBMXYbY)

The reason - nothing was plugged into the back of a switch:

Using the internet and the help of Ben's experience in reading diagrams - it was worked out that there were two possibilities:

Plugged it back in - actually had to do this twice as left one unplugged to find out that this car has a timer delay optioned.

I managed to source a new tailgate switch and more importantly a genuine IS splitter. Apparently, according to the dealer this is the last one in the UK - not sure on the truth of this but gave me a justication to order it anyway.

Winston, the cat trying to help.

Fitted the switch - all interior lights working now as they should. Little things like that really annoy me when you actually use the car.

The splitter will await paint and will be fitted with new clips when the car goes for paint!

Another small update -

One of the guys on the E30 club enquired about buying my 14" wheels, therefore, I've moved up the timeline of getting the 15" wheels sorted.

The factory tyre size is 205/55/15, however, due to the limited choice, I started looking at 195/50/15. After finding limited pictures, I then decided it wasn't the look I was going for then after much deliberation decided on 205/55. However, again the choice of brands were limited. I wanted to go for Michelin PS3's but nothing in this size. After annoying literally everyone in my group chats about nelgible pros and cons between AD08RS and Sportrac5's - I decided to go more risk averse.

(https://i.ibb.co/rwZ3SHg/83647-CEC-D596-4-CAB-A04-C-6-B2-CDFE6390-F.jpg) (https://ibb.co/z4SFYZ1)

(https://i.ibb.co/kcJpGPB/9-C680349-5900-46-D2-A8-C1-B4-E091-EC9-B5-E.png) (https://ibb.co/QmkZJxQ)

Hopefully they'll look and perform well.

In the meantime, I've taken the 15's to be refurbed in my local at Rolling Rims - so awaiting getting them back and awaiting them to collect the new tyres.

My mate said he had a few ECU performance chips spare, so thought I'd have a look to see if mine was stock or not.

Started having a look:

Found this bodge...

ECU out:

Bit dirty - needs a clean:

As I was taking it apart, the tabs on it were so soft, luckily the screws hold it tight but annoying nevertheless.

Anyway, it's back together now but need to sort the cable tie issue out.

That's all for now.

One of the wheels needed quite a bit of weights to be balanced correctly - this might be demoted to a spare if it proves troublesome.

Standard cross-spokes just look right on an E30.

Mate had a 318iS when they were new, same colour and wheels too... always had a soft spot for them since.

Genuinely amazing what is done nowadays... from someone who's a few stents, you'll be in the very best of hands, no luck needed!

I agree, style 5’s look perfect! The caps are very expensive though so it was crucial I bought them combined!

Would love a genuine 318is but for the step up in cash to find one in the same condition and mileage isn’t worth it - I do like having something different though being a touring!

Thanks for the kind words, technology is a marvel, luckily I’ve had open heart surgery about 15 years ago and some stent work in between! More so, just annoying for the loss of time and money as I’ve just finished my MSc but I suppose due to the pandemic everyone’s in a similar situation regardless!

No massive updates as I've been in and out of hospital regarding heart surgery and not really "allowed" to do much.

I had noticed that the passenger headlight was loose so thought it was missing a bolt - turns out it had just come lose from a mounting point so got it back on with a simple push. However, whilst the grill was all off it was worth a clean down.

Also, Jasmine changed the wheels on the car for me today whilst I was "supervising". It is annoying that I'm not able to get stuck in myself at the moment but I think this small change has such a big impact!

That's it for now!

I think I might have to consider selling this one really - with the recent surgery news and my first operation already being canceled, it is more than likely that with 12 week recovery time that I won't get to drive this in the summer. In addition to taking it off the road for winter means another year it's not being used properly. I was looking to buy my first house at the end of the year/ start of next year so really doesn't make any sense for this to be sat when someone can enjoy it. That's my thought process on it at the moment, shame really.

Let's see what happens.

Prices seem to have gone mad on these too, so if you do have to sell hopefully you'll make a little profit even in the short time you've had it. Especially with the improvements you've made and your attention to detail.

Hope you work out a way to hang on to it though. I'm sure you'd miss it when it's gone.

Speedy recovery mate.

Exactly that. You've got a nice one and any you buy after will be unknown.
If you can hang on to it, it'll stop yo kicking yourself down the line.

And I hope you get back to normal soon!

Little update with the E30 -

I was getting a bit bored and thought I'd start to do some jobs which annoyed me so started with the adhesive glue left from the padding under the bonnet.

It started off looking like this - attempted it for one day using WD40 and some weird plastic scraper but wasn't getting anywhere quickly.

(https://i.ibb.co/xLNsYFz/85-ADF2-C3-5-BEE-4909-B8-F9-009-E3-B0-A5950.jpg) (https://ibb.co/zxz5F6P)

Amazon Prime came to the rescue so bought a new plastic scraper and blades with some sticky solution remover which really helped!

I did a little for the next day over a couple hours and then finished it off the day after. I think it came out relatively well!

There was some stange waxoyl smeared across each of the subsections - I accidently chipped into it on the passenger side so you can see it a bit more clearly in the pics. I left it in the middle and drivers side.

Thought I might as well give the bay a general clean at this point:

Proceeded to giving the inside a hoover and wipe although the carpets really ruin the perfectness. They need redying ideally.

At this point, I was enjoying working on the car and taking my time.

Decided to give the car a good wash with Carbon Collective Lusso and started compounding by hand with Megiuars Ultimate:

Came out much better!

Started then giving it a hand polish - tried Autofinnese Tripple Polish but wasn't happy with it. Tried something more aggressive and landed with Autoglym Super Resin.

It was then waxed with Megiuars Professional Hi-Tech Yellow Caranuba Wax and topped with Auto Finnesse Spray Wax:

I decided whilst the car was clean and looking great that I would put the car up for sale:

Sale ad was written and listed on Friday 26th March at £7000. After a lot of initial interest and many messages going back and forth -  a young lad from Staffordshire said he would put a deposit down immediatley and take it at full asking price. He said he would look after it so as promised he sent a deposit and left straight away and took it away on a trailer.

Bittersweet sale for me but it's going to a good home which gives me sollace and its money for my house.

An abrupt end to this chapter but hope this was of some interest at least.

Thanks,

Sam

Sam, the car looks great even if it had the wrong badges on it (not VW and Golf).  :D .The new owner has got a car to be proud of.
I've never had a BMW but the quality of german cars of that era was way ahead of the British rot boxes.
I find myself browsing Merc 190 2.6s and CEs for sale of that era. The prices of are still depressed but on the rise too.

Thanks! Appreciate the kind words - I believe a 2.6 190E would be a good buy. I remember reading that 2.5 cosworth really has to try to leave one comfortably at least.
