Title: Gear box issue
Post by: HughesGTI on August 31, 2020, 04:14:17 PM
Hi all,
New to this club.  I have a 1989 GTI 3 door, only had a car a few weeks and went to my first classic car show today in Cheshire.  Driving home i could only use 3rd and 4th (which made pulling out of junctions interesting!)
can anyone suggest a good garage near to me as the car needs a service anyway.  I am near Warrington but prepared to drive a few miles for somewhere highly recommended.

Hello and welcome...Sorry can’t help on garages but have a quick look at your gear change linkages before you spend a ton of money at a garage

get a gear linkage kit, from ebay(tierod) or mark carter.  And a linkage kit tool, like mr pecks.  and have a mess about, could be some thing easy. Mine can also be a pain. but this is due to the clutch cable, for some reason it works itsself loose after a few hundred miles/months so you could also check that.
