Title: Intermittent cut out 8v PB
Post by: Dougie on October 05, 2020, 10:58:52 AM
My 8v gti cuts out for a split second then cuts back in, almost like I've let off the throttle and got back on it. However I can't replicate it by doing that. No lights come on and I haven't noticed the rev guage dropping or any other signs from the cluster. It's done it whilst I'm crawling along just touching the throttle and while my foots down. It hasn't done it whilst ticking over yet tho. Any ideas guys?

Could it be the ISV?

Are you loosing the whole engine?
Or is it a slight dip in power, like a hesitation?

I'd start by checking the loom, if the whole thing is turning on and off, it sounds electrical.
I'd start by double checking the earth cable that runs from the battery, to the pillar on the chassis leg, to the gearbox bolt.
If that works loose, you'll be in for a heap of pain!

Finally got round to checking that earth which seems OK to me, it's not loose or broken. I have no clue when it comes to electrics. Since I started this thread the car has actually completely turned of 3 times. 2 of those times it's taken a while to start again. I did notice the fuel pump prime after it died but still no lights on the dash, also the rev guage flicks round (higher revs) when it cuts out then back in but the actual engine cuts out.
No idea if this is connected but my water light comes on now and again but my coolant is on max, it also comes on when I turn high beam on some times.

Ohh, if you're loosing your dash lights, it's a good chance that your ignition switch is failing.
My other half had this in her Corrado.
They aren't very expensive, but are a bit of a fiddle to change.

Yes it's a fiddle to change the ignition switch, but no impossible as I proved whilst doing it in a field at Berkeley Castle VW show with limited tools when I had issue.

Sorry when I said no lights on the dash I meant they don't come on like they do when u 1st turn the key. Does it still sound like ignition switch? Thanks

Yes, I'm talking about the red lights for the oil pressure/voltage etc.
They should be on if the ignition is on and the engine isn't running.

They come on as normal when I turn the key to start the car but don't come on when it's cut out and back in. It died again on my way home from work coming round exactly the same corner as last time. Luckily it stopped outside the shop I was nipping in anyway, when I cam out it started like normal and drove about 30seconds more home with 1 cut out then back in.

In theory, if you have your ignition on and the engine is not running, you should certainly have the oil and battery lights on, as the key (and therefore the engine) is in the running position, but you will not have pressure or over 12v of battery.
So my money is still on the switch.

OK, I have ordered a switch thanks, something I have noticed is the car has been fine now since around the time i posted last on this thread. Could be a coincidence but I haven't had the radio on. I did read online some1 had issues which turned out to be something behind the radio. I did change the radio a while back but can't remember exactly when or exactly when this cutting out started.

When it happened to me it was the coil/dodgy connections.
