Title: Complete Suspension Re-build/set up
Post by: BristolGolfmk2 on October 26, 2020, 10:55:46 PM
Hey guys

My MK2 has some awfully low and stiff coil overs currently. I want to change them back to the stock set up.

I have nothing though as previous owner binned old ones, so I'm wondering what do I need to buy to make a complete suspension piece? So far I've got front and rear dampers, and springs. I don't know the vocab for all the other little bits like top hats etc

Cheers

Hello,

Best bet will be to post photos of exactly what you have up and then we can see what is missing.
But off the top of my head, you'll probably want:
Front spring top cap

Rear spring top cap

You'll want a front top mount kit, as yours will probably be shagged, I recommend a mk3 top mount setup, last longer, easier to fit and all round better designed...

You may also need something for the rear top mount, but there is a very good chance you can recycle what you have on there.

Thanks for that mate, really helpful! Ive found some used 16v gti suspension setups, the guy is saying its 10mm lowered than standard 8v. Do you think the ride feel will suffer? I want it as smooth as possible!

Stock 16v will still look high just because nearly every other golf on the planet is lowered even its it’s only 30 to 40mm.

You should have no issues but what will make it perfect is when fitting if you replace all the rubber bushes with good oe quality ones.

The 16v is lower than the 8v but you still get a good ride, the only drawback with a 16v is you need to wear a gold medallion and need a smaller Willy
