Title: Std Tyre Size
Post by: Andy.D on June 08, 2021, 10:02:38 PM
Evening all,

I'm hoping one of you answer the following question!

When I bought my Mk2 gti it had lowered suspension & in order to fit the j6x15 bbs ra's the previous owner fitted 175/50xR15 tyres. I've now reinstated the std suspension and the wheels & tyres don't fill the arches anymore, does anyone know what tyre size came on the wheels as std out of the factory, was it 185/55xR15's?

Cheers

I  believe 185/50 x 15 was standard issue.
I have 195/50 x15 on my estorils the the extra width gives a bit more protection of the rims against kerb graze. I don't think it makes too much difference to the overall circumference/speedo reading and they are a popular size therefore cheap. Not sure I'd recommend Goodyear Efficientgrip. Good reviews but cracks have appeared round the tread at about 3 years old and 10k miles

I can confirm, from original documentation:

But I belive there came a time when 195/50s were more readily available. Used on Cavaliers and Sierras etc, and therefore cheaper and in stock in all good tyre shops so they became a popular alternative.

I stand corrected.
