Michael, the tacho is the easiest one to start with. The Mk2 clocks want the signal from coil negative, and a 20v on coil packs hasn't got one, so you need the tach output pin from the engine ECU or that converter you have. Check which ECU it is running and look up its pinout for the rev counter wire. The speedo depends on the gearbox. If it is still a cable box the cable just needs to reach, but a later box with an electronic sender needs a pulse to cable converter or electronic clocks. On the fuel cell, a simple float switch will only ever give you a low fuel warning and not a proper gauge reading. For the MFA oil temp you need the correct sender, normally in the oil filter housing, with its wire run back to the clocks.
Thank you. With the fuel tank level then how would this be got around to be able to get a reading on the gauge?
I am willing to learn but i am not very good with electrical elements of vehicles and have a few things i would like / need to get sorted. If anyone in the Southwest that would be willing to assist (i can travel) and help me learn whilst doing it? The issues are on a Mk2 20v converted car which runs and drives fine but i want to get the gauges working correctly. The only gauge that currently reads is the temp gauge. I would like to have the speedo, tacho and fuel gauge all working and then if possible the oil temp in the MFA.
The clocks are 160mph 16 gti clocks as this was the original spec, there is a fuel cell with a float switch that i think requires a resistor, i have some other gadgets that came with the car that relate to the speedo / Tacho i believe (i also have a Tacho converter from a previous car). I am not sure what would be required for the oil temp.
Hi, a garage local to me in East Devon. What also you have to think about is humidity if the air is not dry you get a effect called micro blister which causes the paint to bubble after time as moisture is trapped under the new paint.
I know friends that painted there cars they never turned out well. The equipment they had was just not good enough. It also needs a lot of skill. I recently paid £1300 to have half the side of my car painted I am well pleased with the result.
Does anyone on here paint cars on their drive or in their garage to a reasonable standard? I am looking at options around having my mk2 paint matched to the standard factory paint of Monza blue paint. The front wings and doors are still factory paint but at some point the rear end and roof have been painted a dark blue and its not a good finish. I cant afford a full show standard respray but would love it to at least all be the same colour and look decent.
If anyone can comment on here or send me a PM I would love to have a discussion.
Hi, Does anyone know much about a company called Kricket Customs? I believe they have ceased to operate now but i am looking at a mk2 with a 20vt conversion that was carried out by them including some forging works. I am not really sure what to look for or how to know if it is a decent job and the engine strong and good. I have seen some videos of it but havent travelled to see it yet as its quite a distance so trying to gain as much knowledge on it as possible. It has only done approx 900 miles since the conversion which was completed back in summer 22 so it has been used only at weekends etc which is one way a good thing but also concerns me as it hasnt had a lot of time for things to arise and then be corrected.
