mk2 golf 1.3 front hub swap

Hi i have a 1987/88 mk 2 golf 1.3. its right on the change over year so has the older style open bearings that you grease up, on the front wheel hubs. I dont know why but these dont seem to last very long, i've done them twice in the last 5000 miles and ones gone again. Any body tried swapping the front hubs for the later (1988 onwards) sealed bearing type hubs? Does everything have to be changed, ie calipers, drive shafts etc or is just the hub thats different?

Are you doing them up tight or tightish then slacken them a touch?

Yes i thought i was doing that correctly, up tight, then back 1/4 turn.
