Why...

Considering it's a lubricant, why are the lids on grease tins so hard to get off?

Thought that myself the other day, but I did put a smidge of lube around the lid before popping it back on.

Is it because grease, being a lubricant, is subject to contamination (dust, water etc) and the most efficient way to tin it is by way of vacuum sealing same?
Must get out more but waiting for Budget speech.

Because they are reasonably air tight, air has to get in there to allow the lid to come off. While tugging to let the air in the lid tilts and locks on the tin.
