I posted on facebook but not having much luck getting help so I thought maybe people might be able to read through and take a bit more time to reply here? Would really appreciate if i can find someone clued up on carbs!
1989 1.3 Engine So this saga started because it smells really bad of petrol when im driving the car, my daughter constantly complains it gives her a headache. I cant see anything obvious. Ive checked all the fuel lines and they are new-ish anyway but all secure and not split or leaking. I cannot see anything obvious around the carb but then im no expert knowing what im looking for... The smell seems to be coming directly from the carb, its stronger smell directly over it, but then that might just be obvious as thats where the fuel goes I have a feeling its running a tad rich. It starts perfect when cold. It takes longer to start when its hot - could be related or something else? It idles fine. When you go to pull away it will sometimes kind of choke itself and splutter and you have to give it a rev to move. When you are driving it seems to drive really well.
I was going to adjust the mixture screw, but im being thick and i need to work out what carb it is to be able to find the mixture screw.... So on the carb it says Pierberg 2E so obviously i assumed 2E however in the haynes manual it doesnt look like the picture of the 2E. It looks like the picture of the 2E3. So would the '3' also be stamped on there if it was a 2E3 or would it still say 2E regardless and it could well be the 3? So when i know what carb it is I can work out where the mixture screw is. I have an idea BUT i have googled and it says most carbs turn clockwise to make it leaner, but the 2E turns anticlockwise to make it leaner... so again I need to know for definite what model carb it is so I dont mess up the mixture....
So the next thing i noticed while i was there was there was a lot of oil build up which seemed to be coming from the crank shaft breather pipe where it joins the airbox. I wonder if this is creating to the smell being as its just above the manifold? The pipe itself is very soft and very dirty inside so I guess it wont hurt to change it. Also I assume this yellow thing is a oil breather filter which looks ancient so it probably would be good to do that too? Is this is a bad idea and a pig of a job for any reason now is the time to tell me to leave it alone!
I will be if I get all the bit done in time, got a few bits of bodywork booked in too will just be for a day trip though. Might even do a 'slowest lap' record lol
Still going strong... Shes gone through another MOT and been to a lot more shows. Ive serviced her and recently bought a new exhaust system and suspension to go on...
No i unfortunately cant make it this year as I am away on holiday :-( Im going to retro rides gathering though on the club stand so that will be good. Im hoping to get a few bits of bodywork done (the little dents in the door and wing) if my animals ever stop needing the vets and bills that come swiftly afterward!
Feb I had the original gearbox refurbished and fitted and it feels amazing!
She passed an MOT March, had to have the rear fog light re-wired, a front lower arm with bush and the headlights adjusted, other than that all good :-D
In April I had an absolutely disaster, was driving along and a clunk and loud whirring noise and the gears jammed... Initially felt like a gearbox issue as it had just been messed with but after pushing it back on the drive and looking better it turned out to be the rear engine mount bracket had snapped!! This made me very sad and I sulked for a while as I couldnt fix it myself. I had it recovered to a local garage and had it replaced and all is now good again!
I also just decided to fit some smoked crystal cross hair headlamps (RHD) just for a change, obviously I kept the originals though...
Ive recently had to be using the Golf as my daily, she really stepped up and has done all the school runs, shopping etc.. im always getting comments on her as well which is nice. I eventually got round to changing the wing ariel, it was seized so i changed it for a manual one...
the other job i finally got round to doing was the speedo... changed it over as it has never worked. For the first time since ive owned her she now clocks up miles haha! I did change the clocks for ones that were 3k too much so its probably worked it self out about now....
The months of daily use has really not helped the gearbox situation... the noise doesnt bother me but its started leaking now and started to get difficult when its warm to get reverse so i need to sort this ASAP.
She has had the rear engine mount replaced Alternator belt replaced Wiring to positive battery terminal replaced Rear fog light wiring tested Rear wiper now working Front washers now working Clutch was changed Gearbox Changed for a second hand replacement which unfortunately is noisy!! Its been flushed twice but still noisy, think its the input shaft bearing... very very annoying after I just spent the best part of a grand on parts and labour!!
Had a bit of a break through this week... with a bit of help from facebook group members i have finally got my horn to work!! It was given a temp fix for the MOT but then broke again and Ive finally found out the reason it wouldnt work... the spring on the column was missing so it wasnt connecting the earth!
im a little bit further in the washer jet saga now... i know the stalk is working and the relay is clicking, the washer pump is new so there must be a problem with the wiring from the fuse box to the pump...
She is going in to the garage on 13th so will see what I can get done and ticked off! Gearbox is the priority.
So only a few little updates... The noise has been diagnosed as the Gearbox, diff bearings apparently, so I have sourced another 4 speed box from mk2spares that is going to be fitted mid September. I fixed a little leak it had in the rear panel by the light. I cleaned out a load more soil i found around the lights. I touched up a few little bits of paint... She has been to the National Meet and also to the Retro Rides Gathering today. Im not going to push it and go to anything else as the gearbox is leaking a fair bit and although its getting changed I dont fancy having to be recovered home so will have to be patient until it goes it to the Garage.
thank you! yeah the weather wasnt great so only spoke to a few people really but was still nice to have made it there. funny you should say that about the bolts, the driveshafts bolts have worked loose a few times so i will get some new ones. its had new driveshafts and clutch cable so they are ok, and i have a new speedo cable... so i will get a clutch kit too. hopefully ive found a mobile mechanic to do the work for me, fingers crossed!
i have a replacement gearbox for my 1.3 4 speed now but want to make sure i have everything i need so i can take it to a garage and tell them to fit it. should i replace the clutch? it has done 54k miles and the bite is low but it could well be 30 odd years old? also are there any seals or any other little bits i should get?
I keep meaning to comment on this, it's come such along way in a short amount of time. You have been grafting! Did I see you have a 2.0 8 valve for it on Facebook?
