Engine & Gearbox / 1.8 Auto 2E2 Carb Cold start revs profile - high revving?
Hi all, quietly working through issues on our 75k mile 1988.
We had a rough idle, went through all the vacuum pipes and found a pin hole, pipe replace and all good.

One thing bothering me, on a cold start the engine revs to 2200/2400 rpm for around 10-15mins (ambient temp around 15 degrees c), then gradually reduces to a normal idle, to me this feels like longer than needed. Once warm, driving and revs are normal.Doing the usual t'internet dragging points me to either the auto choke needing a declog (car was very infrequently driven over the last 3 or 4 years) or idling overrun control valve? OR is this normal behaviour?

Thanks for the help, i can see moulded clips along the bottom edge of the cover and  two sided clip opposite holes alongthe centre line of the bumper beam. I might take the beam off and fit the beam to the cover, with the cover on the floor

Hi all, just to check i am not over complicating things. We have a 1988 small bumper, GL. Yesterday the front bumper cover fell off! indicators, bumper bar, bumper lower (with the towing hitch cover) etc all stayed in place. Here's my problem logic : Looks like on one side , the circular guide has broken off the body, allowing the bumper to twist downwards and release the clips to the bottom edge of the bumper beam.
My question is..once i;ve replaced the guide, does the cover simply clip into the beam on the central hole clips and the lower edge clips (moulded into the bumper cover) or are there additional fixings? looks too simple?

Engine & Gearbox / 1988 1.8 Auto (totally standard) Running Temp characteristics
Hi all, i have been following DerKommisar's post on overheating.

Here's my situation, if i start the engine and leave it standing then everything seems normal, warms up, gague shows dead centre, revs drop off (down to 900 ish), fan kicks in when things are nice and toasty.  However, if we go for a drive, the gague stays in the thick 'cold' bar area - even after 1hr of driving -the revs remain elevated (about 1200) normal A road driving 15/16 deg outside temp. Soon as we stop moving, quickly comes up to temp on the gague and sits very happily(not overheating). When driving, heater works very well, and quickly. The car has only been  "uncommon" ly driven over the last 3 years and not at all over the last 12 months.
I am tempted just to replace the 3 temp sensors and thermostat, but would prefer to leave well alone if this is just the way they are.
All experience is very welcome....

thanks all, me too! why add it? in the days of loadsamoney ....on  a couple of part/registration search websites it comes up as 1.8 GL CAT  :(

Thanks for the replies, i will triple check, it was a quick look under when loading it onto the trailer in the torrential rain! Theoretically, if there is one fitted, will i need to change anything on the engine/tuning/O2 sensors etc etc when i remove the flippin thing?. BTW loving this club and the info here. Thanks so much for all your help and administering this site.

Hi all, we are new to the golf world (been curating air-cooled for many years). My daughter has me a project as shes just bought a 1988 GL Auto with a 1.8 motor. its going to get a new exhaust ( i see good feedback on trackslag on here), must i keep the Cat or can it be removed as the front section of the exhaust is properly showing its age. Thanks
