Engine & Gearbox / 1988 Golf 1.8 auto - doesn't go into third gear

Any suggestions about how to deal with this - I'm not skilled enough to work on a gearbox myself.
If it's not possible to fix, what about a replacement?

Not sure how easy this looks to get at - when it's stone cold it chugs badly for the first minute or so then is fine. I have to hold the revs up or left foot brake until it smooths out.
I can live with it but thanks for any help.

Engine & Gearbox / Do I need to fix my dipstick?!

My engine oil dipstick seems to be missing its socket - previous owner had somehow rigged one up with insulating tape - do I need to do anything about it? Thanks for any help.
