As promised - new owner got in touch with me regarding first reserve on the GTI!

Unfortunately, with my first property coming this year and wedding the year thereafter it’s not the right situation for me.

So, opening it up to the club for anyone else interested and I’ll pass on the details!

Another little update:

It'd been sitting a while on the side now whilst the sale of the GTI was ongoing.

I've had so many messers on the CL whilst it's been up for sale with potential buyers delaying viewing or losing their deposits.

So, once the GTI had been delievered - I thought one day that the only job I haven't done was investigate the rear door card membranes as I see there was a faint water line on them when I wet vac'd the car.

As such, I removed both door cards and found the original membranes on but shrunken not actually performing. I do believe that someone has been here before on the passenger side mind.

So removed them - they were quite bad and slightly mouldy inside:

Spent a lot of time removing the old glue and cleaning the door:

I went to B&Q and grabbed some rubble sacks and double sided tape - when I got a call about someone wanting to view the car today!

Therefore, rushed back home, realised I didn't have enough time to complete the job properly so left the new buyer supplies and put the door cards back on. Didn't even get time to wash the thing!

Quick spray over with some QD and it's ready awaiting the viewing - went very well, nice young lad came and picked it up and sold for full asking price! I'm really happy for him to learn some new skills and he has a great base to start!

You can't keep them all and it has been replaced with a little Passat 3.2 DSG 4 motion for a daily car which will make things much easier until I build my fitness and strength from the operation.

Shame that both the GTI and CL were an abrupt end to the chapter but it allows me to liquidate for the house and wedding alongside both cars going to someone who can use them and build them properly over a long period of time.

Ironically, in the mids of this another car I have wanted for the last 6 years or so has become available.

That one will be a keeper and a full bare metal, nut and bolt rebuild car - hopefully If I can time this all correctly then in my OWN garage too.

Watch this space.

Thanks to all for reading.

Engine wise, I belive pre 85 is also lacking a temp sensor that is fitted on later K-jets on the inlet manifold I think. I remember seeing it referenced in the Haynes Manual. But since I've had 86 and 87 early 8v's I've never looked into this further. Sad it had to go, but I understand it could have easily cost a lot to do it justice and make it the car it needs to be.

Thanks Tim - didn’t know that! Yeah for sure, although selling both ensures the house and wedding fund are complete at least! Shame it was so short lived, being honest even moving the blue one around without power steering is a bit difficult chest wise, hence the new car being DSG and easy! Perhaps I’ll be back one day! I’m first reserve on the A reg 😉

Very sad update - with the house and wedding funds taking priority, the little GTI was bought a few weeks back by someone up in Yorkshire.

Last picture together:

Uncovered and loaded:

Got so many people staring and pointing on the trailer

Delievered - will miss this one but some sollace is that the new owner is looking to fully restore and will join his lovely collection of cars!

I will be listing a 84' specific list of findings on this thread for reference to the new owner which may help anyone else in the future.

Yeah, the bodywork isn't something I particularly enjoy!
I'm much more at home with mechanicals.

It's staying red, though the painter recommended using laquer.
I wasn't keen at first, though I'm coming around to not having to polish it every other week.

Didn't get as far with the engine stripdown as I'd have hoped this weekend, but I did get a few shots, I'll get them up later.

I can confirm after many many red cars that lacquer is a better idea.

Spent a bit of time on the CL today - decided to tidy up in the bay:

As you can see - it's FILTHY!

Rocker and timing belt covers are well past it!

Although, a nice ' "uncommon" ' metal cover ;)

Also the fan cowling looks terrible.

So, I started removing it all:

Timing belt looks good to me!

My first time with an angle grinder - took Dave's advice and got myself a face shield, I've been putting this job off actually because of my recovery but managed okay - not perfect but I don't think I could physically do more unless I spent more days on it.

Was getting good progress on this - forgot to take a picture of the finished bare metal article for some reason.

Primed:

Painted (satin finish):

In the meantime, I started cleaning up the bay. It's all caked in waxoyl. I got a plastic scraped to try and scrape it off. I then decided this was pointless for the sake of it looking really nice and offering no protection so it stays for now.

New gasket kit:

Cleaned the airbox housing whilst it was off:

Cleaned the rest of the bay itself:

It needs going over with some gunk and a jetwash really - so will look to do this next week.

It was raining at the end of this, so did a parcel shelf strap replacement and thats it for today!

I do love a good wet vac, out George is one of the best 'household' purchases we've made. Although it's cleaned more cars than it has household carpets.

They’re so handy! Ironically, this VAX machine is brand new and I think I have a broken hose so I’m waiting on new parts now.

Winston looks like he's just heard you're selling it!

Yeah he does 😂

That thing does present very well, sure you'll get a bite in no time.
Gutted you're getting rid of it, would have like to have seen it in the metal at some point.

Question is, what are you replacing it with?

Yeah you know how long I’ve wanted a 3 door GTI - just seems unavoidable. If it doesn’t sell, I’ll happily restore it but it will just take some time as house will come first. The likelihood is probably nothing unfortunately but I’ll see if I can get something really cheap depending on how much money is left over etc.

Had some time to give the car a clean today - it was ready for an agreed deal to be sold - however buyer backed out.

Red stripe from the rear bumper removed.

Gave the car a quick polish and some attention on the bumpers - rain kept stopping play

It does look good now mind.

The car is now unfortunatley listed for sale:

The CL is soon to follow.

Little update:

Got to the car battery was dead, so decided just to buy a new one from Halfords.

Postive news, the tray looks clean:

It's been a hot over the last week or so - decided to give it all a wet vac:

Came out well I think!

Manged to get all the stickers and sticky stuff off from where all the figurines are too:

Winston helping

Whilst the car was out, thought I'd have a look to see how the fuel filler neck is - there was a lot of dirt! Although, again no rust!

The whole car needs a good going over so going to give the car a proper clean when the weather permits. However, got as much dirt as I could off!

Lovely car. Many years ago I bought a bronze GL golf from a women in Ipswich, and I’m wondering if it’s the same person. The car I bought was very low miles, just 16k and she didn’t want to put miles on it preferring to use her cl.  My gl also had the same stickers in the corner of the rear windows.  So, I’m wondering if it’s the same person. Mmmmm

Sadly I had to sell my gl to fund my beetle project. I still miss it! Was a cracking original golf. Got a real soft spot for the bread and butter models rather than the gti. Hopefully buy another one, one day.

Thanks! That’s interesting - this was an Ipswich car too, the stickers being the same - it could well be as she ran the bundle of Dubz show!

That GL looks amazing, recognise the plate too for some reason - this little CL should be going up for sale this/next week unfortunately. Just listed the GTI today too.

Another little update:

Mr Mac came over to help me (do the job for me) with the gear linkage and engine mounts. Thanks to him, I'm still struggling strength wise after my op!

So removed the front mount - it was stuffed!

and the new:

Stupidly, we bolted the front mount on and went to take the gearbox mount off with the bracket bolts fouling on the chassis leg. Fail. So back off so we could rock the engine forward.

So back off and new Gearbox mount:

Whilst the mount and bracket was off - thought might as well do the linkage!

All back together - now tight as a drum. I believe the reason it felt loose was that rubber on the relay shaft had disintergrated so was flapping around!

At this point, It was going swimmingly - went to do the last mount and got stuck on the bolt that goes through the mount itself, access is a right pig. WIll give it another go when time isn't limited... well, maybe Ali will anyway.
