Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Breakdown
We would need to know more, do you have a spark and no fuel, or fuel and no spark or nether?  How did it fail, gradually or did it feel like you had switched it off?  Are there any security devices fitted?
Am not sure about spark or fuel as I had no tools at the side of the road.
There are no security devices fitted, it's as if the engine is just switched completely off.
It's done it afew times over the last month but usually starts up again.
The last week tho its totally broken down twice and wouldn't start.
Thank you!!

Mk2 Golf Chat / Breakdown
My 1985 mk2 8v kjet Gti has become totally unreliable and has broken down twice on me in the last week.
The 1st time doing appropriate 60mph the engine died, just completely shut off.
After maybe 45mins it started again and I just about got it home. Took it to my local garage but because at the time it was running he suggested a new fuel pump relay, which I've now replaced.
Tonight it did the same totally died but this time it wouldn't start(just turns over), I returned home on the back of a recovery truck.
To say am annoyed with it is an understatement, I pushed it into the garage a couple of hours later the rusty tart starts.
Am at a loss what to try, I only understand the very basics. Could it be the coil?
Thanks for any advice I appreciate it.

Suspension & Steering / Re: Biggest sensible wheels
My schmidt wheels have been sent of to Unique_wheel in Hull, looks like things are going to get expensive.  Just ordering the rear lips alone is probably £500 then am going to be hit with import tax gulp....that's before any work starts.  Apparently the cost of schmidt alloys has doubled since I purchased them years ago.
Time to sell a kidney I guess.

Suspension & Steering / Re: Biggest sensible wheels
Not something I've got involved in to the extent you plan to, the most I've had to do was calculate clearances for winter wheels / tyres which aren't usually that significantly different from standard specs.

There's quite a few sites out there that do the exact same thing, but this is the one I've got used to using so works for me...

1010Tires

Facility to calculate both wheel and tyre sizes separately.

As a base line the standard BBS RA's are 15x6 et38 on 185/55x15's.

You've non-standard suspension too, that'll probably play havoc with the calculator.

When they substitute a different width lips, does that impact on the offset?

Changing the width of the lips shouldn't alter the offset,  looking at the link you kindly posted thank you.

Suspension & Steering / Biggest sensible wheels
Am looking for advice please at the minute am running schmidt Th-line alloys on my lowered mk2, they are a square set up 7.5×16 ET26 with 195/40 tyres.
The fronts are at my maximum width but the rears need to be wider. Am getting the complete set refreshed over winter and will run wider lips on the rear.
What is my maximum width I can go on the rear 8inch or 8.5?
And am lost What tyres to run also on the rear, please help its giving me a headache?

General Chat / Re: Split rim alloy refurbishment
I've just had a look through my notes from when I took the website brief from Jeremy at Reinventing the Wheel.

He identified the businesses that he was up against and competing against.

https://jpalloys.co.uk/

These guys are in Cannock, still a distance but a bit nearer to you. I remember seeing these guys on one of the car shows, most likely Car SOS since Wheeler Dealers went state side. But could have been one of the other shows. They offer collection and delivery.

https://platinumalloys.com/

But they're in Wiltshire, so less helpful. Although maybe worth a quote if you need to courier the wheels anyway.

There was a third,  but looks like they've ceased trading.

Thanks again emailed jpalloys don't think they are very keen on dealing with bare aluminium split rim alloys but I've given them the info they asked for.

What area are you in?

I know of a place in Cheltenham, only because the company I work for made their website.

Can’t vouch for the work and as far as I know I think they might be a tad more expensive than anywhere else but looks like they do good stuff and have some good reviews.

Thanks, am in the North West between Liverpool and Chester.
I might have to take the tyres off and figure how to despatch the alloys on a pallet,  unless I find a company closer to home.
Or option B sell them on a purchase something different.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.

General Chat / Split rim alloy refurbishment
Am looking for a company to refurbish my 2pc schmidt TH-LINE alloys, I've googled it endlessly but still no joy.
Rusty rimz- no longer established
Rimscarnated- not bothering to answer my messages on social media or email(strange)
Any ideas please?
