Suspension & Steering / Re: Not enough adjustment in track rods to get properly aligned
Yes thanks that's what I was planning to do, measure them up etc. That's good news (!) that you found different lengths on auto doc; I had only checked on mister auto and oscaro, so maybe they're using different databases. I did try changing the model in the search several times but threw up nothing. I have to old ones still and did a visual check before fitting the new ones and they semmed identical, but I didn't go as far as unscewuing them and checking that there was the same amount of thread right enough.

Anyway I'll try and find a mo to measure them up and check what I bought and post back

thanks again

Suspension & Steering / Re: Not enough adjustment in track rods to get properly aligned
Thanks for replies:

Car is not modified or lowered - everything is stock

Not sure if was one side or both sides. If i've understand the process right they centre the steering wheel before doing the adjustments. If this is the case and I've had the steering wheel off and put it back on un-centered then this could mean that one side was sufficiently of to mean there wasn't enough adjustment, but not both sides. Is this what you were thinking?

Suspension & Steering / Not enough adjustment in track rods to get properly aligned
hi folks

Just back from trying to get my tracking/geometry done having changed more or less all the steering and suspension on my 1.6 petrol. The guys at the garage told me that it was impossible to do as there was not enough adjustment on the track rods. they unscrewed the track rod ends until the thread dropped out but still not enough to get things lined up.

Does this ring any bells for anyone?

My first though was that there might be two different length and i'd fitted the short one but a quite look doesn't show up any different length parts.

Something could be bent somewhere but seems unlikely as I've just changed everything.

Any thoughts wlecome - had a search for old threads but didn't throw anything up.

All the best

Interior, Upholstery & Trim / Re: Does a 5 door headliner fit on a 3 door?
OK looked again and I see there is a different part number for the two and 4 door (was looking on my phone before and it wasn't displaying properly.

So my question is still is it possible to cut to shape or is it too narrow/just the wrong shape somehow?

Interior, Upholstery & Trim / Does a 5 door headliner fit on a 3 door?
I've found a golf in the local scrappers with a nice clean headliner but its a 5 door and mine's a 3. I've had a look at parts numbers that I can find and only found 1 number, but I see some sellers on ebay as selling different ones for different models.
Or can I cut it down to fit? I imagine that a 5 door is a bit smaller along the edge where the back door goes than a 3 so it would be more possible to cut a 3 door to fit a 5 but not vice versa...
Any info greatly appreciated

Thanks V much
Yes that's kindof what I was expecting the situation to be!
I think i might have found one in a breakers nearby so i'l have to have a think about how to get them off. The main thing as far as I can see it just trying to preserve the original shape as far as possible. When I did it on my car it was the first time so I didn't really know how to do it, and also now I have an idea more or less where the clips are so I reckon it might be a question of getting a wee lever in as close as possible to the clips

Mk2 Golf Chat / Where to find rubber roof mouldings?
Hi folks
First post on the forum
I've been restoring a 1.6 petrol 3 door that somebody gave me for the last year or so. It had some fire damage to its paintwork having been parked next to a car that was on fire briefly, before being moved, and was in a sorry state mechanically but is otherwise fairly sound.
I'm nearing the end and I've done more or less everything, and I'm now trying to replace the rubber strips/mouldings that run up the side of the windscreen and along each edge of the roof to the top of the tailgate.
Item 30 here:
https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf/go/1989-92/8/853-168010/#30

Judging by the mess I made of getting them off I'm sure I'm going to have loads of people saying "Noooo, just leave them - too difficult to put back on straight, can't find them as replacement parts" etc, but the thing is the fire damage had wrecked them so I kindof have to replace them. Them problem is the metal U channel in the middle and trying not to bend it out of shape...

Any advice on where I can find a replacement set?

Or any advice on taking them off in such a was as to not bend/warp them too much if i manage to find a car being broken.
