Engine & Gearbox / 16v Engine Stalling and Air Conditioning Issues
Tres embarrassment today…..I broke down

It’s 38+deg C here in Melbourne, Australia and I was driving the mk2 in traffic.  With the aircon on high, I would pull up to stop and the car would not catch the idle in time and stall.  When I turned the air con off it would catch the idle as normal.

Anyway, I was experimenting to see if there any other symptoms and I stalled and couldn’t restart as the starter was too hot.

10min it’s in the side of the road and I was good to go again.

I have done some diagnosis today.  Cleaned the isv In petrol overnight and then with contact cleaner whilst ‘on’.  Connected all back up and ISV seems to work fine.  I have been checking voltage drop when the ac is on.

Without ac I get 13.8/9V across the battery.  When I turn on the ac the voltage at the battery drops to 12.5V.  I’d say this is definitely the issue as the idle system is voltage sensitive.

I guess the next step is figuring out where the high draw is: compressor, rad fan(which turns on with ac)…..ideas?

I will also go get the battery load tested.

(the 16v has just one isv that is controlled by an idle control module in the dash, which has an input for the ac to tell the idle to go higher)

Suspension & Steering / Re: Another Spline Adaptor Question
the small spline had a spring and washer.... if the PO did the job properly when removing the adapter he/she might have put a washer in place. If you're trying to refit the adapter on top of the washer you might get into trouble. Otherwise, sorry I don't know the answer.

Perfect, so it should just be spring  then adaptor, no lock washer?  Will give it a go

Suspension & Steering / Another Spline Adaptor Question
A previous owner changed the steering wheel to small spline.  I have an adaptor to put back on (191419514), but it seems I can’t squish the spring down far enough to slide it all the way on (or maybe I’m not strong enough?).

Looking on ETKA there is another adaptor 191419514A which seems to be shorter.

Question is, when do you use the shorter adaptor, is the PS models? Or do I just need to wind the long adaptor on with the nut?

Mk2 Parts Wanted / Re: Wanted: Tow eye cover and Horn cover
What year is yours i thought it was later?
The tow I cover you've shown in an early car 84-87/88 if your handbrake just has a cover that clips over the lever you want the one pictured.

But if you handbrake has a surround fixed to the floor you need a later style tow eye cover, it's more triangular.

You can also check by the tow eye itself early a U shape, later are more of a V.

It is an 88 and is definitely the early style cover

Interesting, I thought that was the ‘std’ wheel as all the PAS GTIs that came out here in Australia (they were all 5dr 8v) had that wheel.

I know there are regional variations, I have a digital copy of Australian sales brochure somewhere (got a new computer so might be archived) I'll try look it up and see if it sheds any light on factory spec.

[UPDATE:] I've found it and published it to the OEM brochure list under 1990: https://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/clubforum/index.php?topic=10.0

Thanks

The one my car originally came with, based on an early pre-mod photo is the one here

I am currently hunting the horn cover with the diagonal stripes. Part number 191 419 669E

Thanks for the welcome.  There is a tiny bit of rust on the lower rear valance, which will get dealt with one day, no salt here, so not too much of a hurry.  The red will fade if left unattended, but I will be polishing and waxing twice a year.

Welcome! That looks bloody lovely. Any more pics from the rear of that exhaust? It seems hard to find one that fits nice on a small bumper and that looks really nice from the angle above.

Here is a pic of the exhaust.  I am actually thinking of removing the miltek and going standard.  Its a little loud on the freeway

Welcome, looks gorgeous ..should imagine you won’t have the rust issues we have but the pink fade must be worse.... I once had a set of 14” Ras which were off of something like a polo Gti... Bottletops are quite smart though .
If you go for an oem steering wheel are you aware of the PAS wheel?

PAS wheel?  I have found a stock wheel.  It is a GTI wheel with the 'round' holes, not the 'triangle' holes.  I just need to track down the correct horn button, but its proving difficult as many of the UK suppliers don't ship to Australia, or maybe they are just busy dealing with lockdown?

Hi all

I have a 1988 16v GTI 3dr.  I picked it up late last year and it was a very lucky buy, as there are only 3-4 16v GTIs in Australia.

The car is pretty damn clean and straight and my goal is to take it back to stock (except the RAs can stay).  It won’t take much, but has a miltek exhaust, 1/2 smoked lights, sport line steering wheel, CL type front spoiler, etc.

I also have a 1976 Mk1 and have previously owned a Mk2 8v GTI, so not new to the golf game

Cheers
