Members' Cars / 3 months on...
It's now 3 months since I bought my '91 Driver. In that time it's had a new cylinder head gasket, water pump, timing belt, various coolant leaks fixed, new head lining, various bits of internal & external trim replaced, red stripe grille, and my latest purchase is a pair of red stripe bumpers from Germany. I know this isn't OEM for a Driver, but I love the look! I think the next job will be a new heater matrix, as after various repairs the heater is still cold.
I'm really pleased with the car, it now goes really well both in city traffic and the right hand lane of the M6 (even when it's moving).

Technical / Re: New battery
Hi,

It's kept outside and I plan to use it fairly frequently, but I only travel to work (a round trip of 90 miles, coming home at 8pm so lights on heater stereo etc) once a week. The battery appears to be OK, I got the car in July, so I don't know how old the battery is or how good the car is in winter. I thought an upgrade might be a good idea. Does it have to be an 063?

Technical / New battery
Hi Everybody!

I'm looking to change the battery on my 1991 Golf Driver 1.6. It has the 72HP RF engine with a webber carb.
Currently, the car has a "Drivetec' heavy duty DM063 (44AH) battery fitted.
When I check drivetec's website they say its not compatible with the car.
I'm struggling to find which battery I need, various websites are suggesting 063, 065 & 075.

Any advice gratefully received  :D

Thanks.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: History of vehicles owned
OK, so, this is quite an odd collection, as I have had various jobs that had required specific cars,
I also have loved old cars since I was a kid, so when I was 18 in 1987 my first car was a
1957 Austin A35 (for sale about 2 miles from where I lived, and only it's 3rd owner!).
1988 Vauxhall Astra
I then became a mobile caterer, pulling a snack caravan so I bought a
1971 LWB Landrover Safari series 2A
1979 Volvo 340
1975 Rover 2200TC which I then restored and used for pulling the caravan.
I then started the training to became a driving Instructor and had a 1975 Ford Escort MK2 for a few months before ordering my first new car, which I order and chose the colour of and was very excited about:
1991 VW Polo Fox Coupe in Mint metalic
1992 VW Polo 1.0 Genesis
1995 & 1996 VW Polo 1.3/1.4L in Dragon Green Pearl Affect with a sunroof
1997 VW Polo 1.9D CL
1999 Seat Arosa 1.0
I then stopped being a driving instructor and part ex'd the Arosa for a 12 month old
1999 VW Golf Mk4 1.9E SDI
My wife then became eligible for the Motability scheme so we had
2004 VW Golf 2.0 S SDI
2007 VW Touran 1.6S
2010 Renault Grand Scenic Prestige (the dark years)
2013 VW Touran 1.6TDI S Bluemotion.
We then decided to buy a used wheelchair accessable car for my wife and I had a second car
2001 VW Bora Sport 1.9 TDI PD 130. I abolsutely loved this car and my interest in old cars was rekindled.
2006 VW Touran 1.9 TDI SE, I only kept this for 7 months when I found:
2006 VW Touran 2.0 Sport PD140 DSG with a sunroof! This is currently daily
In July I bought 1991 VW Golf Driver 1.6

Other Problems / Re: No heat from heater
Also the out hose from the matrix has this copper pipe in it. I have paperwork to confirm a new matrix was fitted in about 2011/12, can’t remember the exact date without checking so it’s not 30 years old. I’m reluctant to dismantle all the heater if it could be something other than the matrix.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Is this the valve? It goes back into the engine, so I assume (quite possibly incorrectly) it’s a proper part of the coolant system.

Other Problems / Re: No heat from heater
So I've back flushed the heater matrix for about an hour and flushed the whole coolant system.
I've run the car and made sure there are not air locks etc and the heater is slightly better, but still on the cool side.
The in and out hoses to the heater matrix get very hot and the bottom radiator hose gets hot at the appropriate time, so the thermostat is working OK.
Any ideas??

Cheers.

Other Problems / Re: No heat from heater
There wasn't any sticky stuff in the heater box, just lots of small bits of foam.
Not sure about the small hands, but I have lots of cuts/scratches and today they really ache :( .
Must be getting old...
Like the car!

Other Problems / Re: No heat from heater
Hi,

Thanks for all the info, it is really really helpful. I’ve just driven about 3 miles in the car. The top radiator hose is very hot, bottom hose warm. Bottom hose does get hot, I remember when I was massaging them on Saturday evening. I repaired 3 heater box flaps while it was in the car, I did the one at the front that moves with the heater direction control and the two that are hinged together, further back inside the box. These moved together when moving the hot/cold control. I’m currently running a radiator flush and will back flush the heater matrix on Friday. Thanks to your info I’m not going to touch the thermostat as it appears to be working and the car does have power steering.

I’m a bit out of practice doing these kind of car jobs as I’ve not done anything for about 34 years, but I am loving the challenge,

Thanks again 👍
