Engine & Gearbox / All Cylinder Misfire Trouble shooting
Last post by JackLintern -
Hi, I have an 86 8v gti engine code EV. I bought it not running in January, it having been sat for 6 years, and got it going again in the summer. I have driven it about 2k miles since but after about an hour of driving I start to get intermittent misfires of all cylinders simultaneously. My guess is the in tank pump, which I did replace before first getting it going, is overheating. If I pull over and sit for 10 minutes I can drive for another ~20 minutes without issue, If I fill up with fuel I can drive for another hour-1.5 hours without issue. I was wondering if anyone had experienced a similar problem, before I just swap out the already ‘new’ in tank pump?

Hi

Replacement ECU in. I also used the digifant YouTube video and multi meter to check all the connections and tighten anything that looked loose.

New oil and filter, and it's running sweet as a nut.

Again thanks for your help.

Cheers

Iain

A little bit more time spent on the gearbox. I took the crown wheel and open diff down to a mates and used their neighbours pillar drill to drill out the rivets.

I snapped the drill bit on the last one 🤦‍♂️ so ground the rivet down with a finger file and tapped it out. Also tapped my hand in the process!

Went to Dan's and fitted the Quaife to the crown wheel and torqued the ARP bolts to 54 lbft.

Gave the casing and gears a reasonable clean down with brake cleaner.

Sealant applied to the casing and bolts all torqued down.

We stopped for a cheeky burger before calling it a day for other commitments. Just needs 5th gear fitting, the new seals and cups and selector I think. Then it can go back in. I'm not looking forward to lifting it again!

Hi thanks for the reply, I've got a spare ECU so will try that tomorrow. I'm going to check the wiring with a multi meter before I commit to plugging in my only spare.

I've already dropped the oil, so good shout.... it was significantly watered down with all the fuel going into it.

Hi,

Is it possible your main earth has become lose?
If so, the chances are your ECU has died:
When the main earth loosens, the car uses the ECU earth as the main and it fries it.
The main symptom for this is the injectors being stuck open.

First thing you need to do is drop your oil out and replace it with new, then fit a new ECU and try again.
If you successfully get your car to fire now, the diluted oil will kill your engine... ask me how I know!!
