Mk2 Golf/Jetta Sales / 1989 Golf GTI 16V 3Dr Resto project, Barn Find

This mk2 Golf GTI 16V needs to be saved!  My friend has owned it for 20+ years but it has been parked up and largely forgotten about since the engine gave up at about 225000 miles in 2007.
My friend is the 6th owner, the car has never been crashed and is fairly original.  The engine is gone now - he had planned to eventually do a VR6 or BAM turbo conversion at some point but in reality he won't have time to do it in the foreseeable future and he needs to let it go to someone who will be able to to get this car back on the road.
All the parts are there (except the engine) - the front bumper, grilles, headlights dashboard etc are all stored in it or in the adjacent lock-up.  The windscreen is cracked and there are a few scabs of rust on the body and underneath but it's fairly solid and complete.  It is a full resto project and new engine or engine conversion required but the car should be saved by someone with the time and love for these cars to take it on.

Virtually mint set of seats and door cards for a 3 door - stored wrapped in loft for 10 years so its time to part as the dream car for them never happened. There for I may well be the cause of the issues afterward the event "thou identical still". My story certainly is not the same as both mechanics claimed, as they both said a rebuild, ultra sonic clean, will cure it

But needless to say, I'm not investing any more money or time on the pierburg


Has your jetta got the 1.3 engine or a 1.6/1.8l?

The reason your mechanic has said the bearing has gone is because it's the root cause:
The seal in the box has failed because the bearing is allowing the shaft to move up and down, which has unevenly worn the seal.

As for gearbox refurbishments, I can't recommend Gas N Gears highly enough, the guy has been in the VW world for 20+ years and has done around four boxes for me, all faultless. Not cheap, but great workmanship.

Hi, if you need the car fixed quickly then let the mechanic fix it otherwise as you are going to have to repair in the long run don't bother. Personally I would have my own gearbox repaired as you end up with a known quantity you don't know what you are getting with a second hand item.

Yeah the metal is unobtanium but I will ask where he got his, in fact I just spoke to him and he did get the metal bits 2nd hand, he also said that you can use front ones and cut them to size for the rear and also there are stainless steel ones out there so if asking see if they have the stainless ones as they wont rust but he also recommended MK2 Spares, if they haven't them no one will I reckon.

It's fine to run without a cap, if it boils over then you know it's overheating and the stat is stuck, obviously don't run it up to temp and then take the cap off lol.
