1.6 Doesn't start even after the parts cannon

Hi all,

I recently got an '89 1.6 as a project and im stumped.

I hasnt been on the road for 3 years but it seems a previous owner has launched the parts cannon at it to no avail. It has a new ignition coil, HT Leads, Dizzy and I've fitted new plugs and battery myself recently.

I took the king lead out to check if that was even getting spark in the first place which it wasnt so i traced back to the coil and terminals 1 and 15. I used a multimeter at Terminal 1 which gave nothing and Terminal 15 gave a reading of 0,5 mV when cranking it, I know a multimeter isnt the best for this particular test and a test light would be better, but its all I had at the time.

I've seen a lot of talk about the TCI which I havent checed yet, so could it be that which is fried? or am I missing steps or looking in the wrong place.

A point in the right direction or at least to another thread on here with some form of guide would be great!

Thanks in Advance :)

You should be getting 12 volts at the coil.  I'm not sure which terminal though, should be the positive one.  Check your fuses, and I'd recommend having a look at the wiring diagram in the haynes manual.  I've used it a few times and its very helpful.  You may have a broken wire.

Thanks very much, I have the haynes manual for it so i will find that wiring diagram

If you are not getting current to the coil, you could try bypassing it and feeding it direct from the battery (temporary), to see if it starts.  However, you'd need the haynes manual to identify the correct terminal on the coil
