Heater box

Thanks to eddypeck.

The heater box is located behind the dash, it contains the heater matrix. The heater box, via the arrangement of internal flaps and operated by the levers on the dash, direct the air flow around the cabin and controls the temperature by allowing warm and cool air to mix.

Common issues with the heater box is the foam originally fitted to the direct flaps has disintegrated over the years, therefore the hot air from the heater matrix and cold outside air feed cannot be separated, Giving cold air inside the car regardless. And the direct also cannot be controlled. Basically you lose all heater functions and just get external air flowing through the cabin.

A tell tell sign of this is small chunks of foam being spat out of the air vents when you put the blower on full. Here is a handy how to guide by Macmillions https://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/clubforum/index.php?topic=63.new#new
