Engine & Gearbox / Gear linkage going out of alignment
Twice now, when my son was driving his 1.6 driver the gear linkage has gone out of alignment. This time he lost 1/2 and last time 5th. I reset the linkage using the special tool to align the stick and tightened up the pinch bolt. I had done it pretty tight last time so I’m surprised that it twisted out of alignment on the shift rod again. It’s a bit annoying the shift rod doesn’t have a dimple in at to prevent this. Any suggestions as to what might cause this? Is it a common problem. I can’t torque the bolt as I can’t get a torque wrench in, there’s not much space. Thanks

Your Non Mk2 Cars or Bikes / Rally beetle
Over the years I've built many beetles.  This is my current and probably my last full resto.  My back was definitely not happy with this project, and gave out numerous times particularly when lifting the shell.  It currently still has a stock engine, but my brother and I are working on a modified one.  Here's some photos.  Project took 3 years to complete, which is about as fast as I can do one.

Mk2 Golf Chat / 2.0 8v conversion
I’ve been watching this series of videos on a 2.0l 8v conversion with twin dellorto carbs
https://youtu.be/_U8YpSuBaNc?si=M_4fAgIf5TrLbyz8
It really appeals to me, because I’m old school. I don’t do computers but I’ve built plenty of carbs, and many tuned air cooled engines. This would be a cool conversion on my sons Driver in the future.
Hardest part would be collecting the parts. I like the intake and exhaust set up. Might be a bit more clearance for the radiator on a mk2. Looks like he used a 02 gearbox, driveshafts etc, so looks straightforward in that respect. Looks like it takes a gti clutch too. Only bit I don’t like is the alternator belt set up. Very little of the belt runs on the water pump pulley. Will require a very tight belt which will strain the bearing. Should really have 90 degrees of interference on the belt. What alternatives are there? I’m not much of an expert on the water cooled parts and what mix and match parts can be used. TIA

Engine & Gearbox / Heavy clutch
A mate of mine has a 86 GL golf with the 1.8l engine. Its clutch is pretty heavy making it a real pain when driving in traffic. It’s a lot heavier than the new clutch I fitted to my sons 1.6 driver which feels fine. Is the clutch on the 1.8 engine/gearbox meant to be much heavier? He’s already fitted a new clutch cable but made no difference. He doesn’t want to change the clutch if it’s not faulty. It doesn’t slip and the car has only done 36k miles. Anyone have any views?

Heating & Cooling / heater matrix bypass
Hi.  There is no heat coming from my sons heater in his mk2 Golf driver.  I've checked the hoses to the matrix and they are cold, so I'm assuming the bypass device is seized.  I know I could just remove it, but the car is on its original matrix.  Its a very late 1991 model.  Has anyone tried to repair one of these?  I'm assuming the aluminium take off point is what clogs up inside.  I've no idea how it works.  Does it have a diaphram inside like the main thermostat?
Thanks

Mk2 Golf Chat / Best quality cv boot?
The rhs outer cv boot is just started to split on my 1991 golf driver. It’s the original boot. The quality of rubber isn’t that great these days to does anyone recommend a particular brand of boot? I tend to buy febi bilstein parts when I can get them but I’ve not bought one of their cv boots before.
Thanks K

Suspension & Steering / OEM GTi Springs
Okay.  I bought a Golf driver for my son for his first car.  Obviously insurance is going to be expensive, so the car will be kept stock.  However, I'm going to fit some new B4 bilstein shocks, because I've run them in the past and the damping is a lot better than the stock ones and they look identical to stock ones.  Eibach springs are great but they are obviously lower than stock, so cant get away with that.  SO, I had an idea.  Why not fit stock GTi springs, which I believe as 20mm lower than stock.  However, although I found there is a separate part number for the GTi front springs (compared to the bread and butter models), all the usual suppliers list the same rear spring for all models, including the bread and butter ones, for the rear (191-511-115A).  I even checked Bilstein's web site and they list the same rear spring for all models (36-226085).  Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  Is this correct?

Engine & Gearbox / Weber carb conversion, query?
Hi,
I recently picked up a bargain second hand weber 32/34 DMTL for my 1600 driver.  There are a couple of issues to resolve though.  The kit is missing the fitting instructions, which would be helpful to make sure than nothing is missing.  Has anyone got a copy that they can post a photo of?  Secondly, the seller didn’t know if the carb was for a 1600 or 1800.  Does anyone know what the correct jet sizes for the 1600?  I can easily pull the jets out to check.  Bit of a faff, but these carb kits are expensive new, so its worth the hassle. Thanks K

Wheels, Brakes & Tyres / Changing rear brake pipes
Hi,
Anyone got some good advice on changing the rear brake pipes that go to the rear wheel cylinders.  The LHS one looks like a right arse to get to because the bracket for the brake compensator gets in the way of the brake pipe spanner. Very little space to work with at all.  Cheers K
