Mk2 Golf Chat / Sun visor retrim
Hi all

Has anyone had their sun visors re trimmed professionally? Any recommendations?

I recently bought a new headliner from headliner-world on eBay (it looks great, for anyone considering doing the same). They sent some spare material for covering the sun visors, which I’m tempted to do that so everything matches, but it looks too fiddly for my sausage fingers. Would like to give them to a professional.

Cheers

Struggling to find a replacement driver’s side roof gutter for my 3dr Gti. Does anyone have one they’re looking to sell?
(Long shot, I know!)

I.C.E & Electrical / Car cuts out - fuel pump electrics?
Wonder if anyone has any experience with an issue I’m currently having where the engine cuts out on my ‘86 Gti. I’ll be driving along normally when the rev counter suddenly drops to zero as the engine dies, but lights and MFA etc still have power.  Occasionally it restarts straight away, but normally I prod the fuse box for a minute or two before it will work. I noticed that the fuel pump relay felt pretty warm, but not burning hot.

When I checked under the bonnet, the battery negative lead (including the earth) was loose - could this cause the fuel pump to cut out, without (noticeably) affecting anything else? I tightened the connection to the battery and the Golf ran home fine, but it could be pure luck…

A bit of history: I had some issues last year with the fuel pump electrics - initially the relay went, then (after a second breakdown) the garage noticed a problem with the earth wiring behind the fuse box. Both of these issues had the same effect as above, i.e. they led the car to cut out. After the wiring was fixed and the car ran well - until now!

The negative lead for the battery may be a red herring (but so could my prodding of the fuse box)! Unsure if it’s a new wiring problem or perhaps the root cause is an issue with the fuel pump itself, or something totally different. Either way, I’m sure it will be fun finding out  :D

One other thing I noticed - I think the problem is worse when the car is warm, it has never failed to start or cut out immediately after starting, it always lets you drive a few miles away from home first haha

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Engine & Gearbox / Wiper motor
Hi everyone
Does anyone know whether a pre-87 car would require a different front wiper motor from a post-87?
(Mine is an early Gti where the wipers go the ‘wrong’ was across the screen like in a LHD car, unsure which part number I should be looking for!)
Thanks in advance

Mk2 Golf Chat / 2022 - plans and ambitions for next year
So, what are your car-related plans or ambitions for the year ahead? Whether it’s finishing a restoration, planning a road trip, or a something totally different, it would be really interesting to hear what people are lining up…!

My own plan for next year is to treat the Mk2 to an uncommon “long-distance” (for me) road trip, from SE England to the Yorkshire Dales - visiting the highest pub in the UK while I’m at it. It’s not something I would even be entertaining if it wasn’t for the help and advice from everyone on here over the past year and more - thanks all, and Happy New Year!

Mk2 Golf Chat / Door pin pull collar
Hi all. I was doing a job on the Golf over the weekend and had taken the door cards off, when I found a bit of black plastic that looked like it should sit on the top of door card, around the ‘Golf tee’ that you push down to lock the doors. EBay has them listed as ‘door pin pull collars’.

Does anyone have these on their car?

I was pleased to find it, it looks smart, but doesn’t stay put. I put it into the right place but it seems to attach itself to the ‘Golf tee’, rather than the door card - so every time I unlock the door, it parts company with the door card. Possibly because my door cards aren’t in great nick so don’t hold it in place properly, I wonder if some super glue might help. Should it just clip into place and stay put?

Cheers

Mk2 Parts Wanted / Wing mirror cap (type 19 w quarterlights)
Hi
Don’t suppose anyone has the little black plastic cap that sits over the screws that hold the wing mirror on, for a “type 19” car?
Mine has mirrors that are adjustable from the inside, but not electrically (strange caveat but I’ve seen mirrors that have no internal adjustment at all).
If anyone has one or two, I’m interested  :)

Engine & Gearbox / Gear linkage - alignment - second gear
Hi all
I wondered if anyone has much experience of aligning the gear linkage after changing the plastic / rubber bushes.
I recently updated the bushes for the gear linkage in order to change the shift quality. By and large, everything feels good now, however it's difficult when changing down into second from any gear (changing up from first is fine).
I did use the tool from eBay that holds the gearstick in neutral while doing the job, not sure if that still allows for a bit of slack. Is it just a case of fiddling around with the position of the bracket that holds the relay shaft, a bit of trial-and-error with some small adjustments? Or are there any quick wins that I should look at?
I'm also trying to adjust the clutch cable as it's biting very high, but I wonder if that's a separate issue as all the other gears are working fine.
Thanks for any advice!

Mk2 Golf Chat / Vinyls
Hi all. I’m looking for a near side sill vinyl and a complete swage line vinyl, to replace some tired / missing vinyl on an early Gti. All the other vinyl on the car is original, so I’m hoping to get something that isn’t noticeably different. Plenty available online just wondered if anyone has any recommendations?

Also, has anyone tried fitting them? As things stand I’m thinking of sending it to a body shop for that.

Cheers!

I.C.E & Electrical / Radio
Hi all,

I’ve got an old Blaupunkt radio in my 1986 Golf Gti and it doesn’t turn on/off with the ignition, I just turn it on and off at the unit each time. Does anyone know if this is normal on this age of Golf?

Curious if it’s a fault or if it’s just how they come! Lockdown must really be biting...  ::)

Mk2 Golf Chat / Repairing clocks - BilTechnik
Hi

If anyone has dodgy clocks that they need fixing, I can highly recommend contacting Nathan at BilTechnik. He's just repaired my clocks, which were suffering from intermittent MFA and rev counter problems (for 8 years... But after a year's worth of lockdowns I finally ran out of excuses for not fixing them!)

Having unsuccessfully exhausted options such as replacing the fuse or checking the earth, I removed the clocks and posted them to BilTechnik. Nathan really knows his stuff! A few days later the clocks were back with me, fixed, along with photos and a video to demonstrate them working. It's a brilliant service and the overall cost was less than a used replacement from eBay - which possibly would have had their own gremlins to resolve, and wouldn't have had the right mileage - so I considered it a bit of a bargain.

Note: I'm not connected with BilTechnik in any way, and I've only used them once, but sharing my experience in case this is useful info for anyone in a similar situation who doesn't feel confident touching the circuit boards behind the dials.

Obviously it helps if you have ruled out other potential causes (e.g. fuse, earth, button on wiper stalk) so that you can pinpoint any issues to the clocks themselves, but it does seem to be quite common - particularly if you have Motometer ones, unfortunately.

Cheers all, stay safe

I.C.E & Electrical / MFA
Hi all. Any MFA experts out there?  :))

I have a 1986 Gti 8v with MFA that is not working. I took the clocks out and have had them professionally tested, confirming that the clocks are fully functional including the MFA. So I’m wondering what else might be the culprit?

Everything else, including the rev counter, is working correctly. The clock is working.

Any pointers greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Mk2 Parts for Sale & Breaking / P slots and bottle tops for sale
Hi all

Two sets of 14” alloy wheels for sale, both from early Gti / 16v cars (but I assume would fit any Mk2). Selling due to a clear out.

P slots x4  - need a refurb cosmetically, but would be a good starting point as they are straight and unbuckled. All 4 centre caps also present with in-tact clips, as well as 2 Firestone tyres that still have a couple of mm left.

Bottle tops x4 - good condition with some minor signs of wear including lacquer peel, but still look smart when fitted on the car. All 4 centre caps present, as well as 2 vgc tyres (UniRoyal) and 2 tyres that are MOT-worthy but will need replacing soon (Bridgestone / Michelin).

Asking for £150 per set, collection from Hertfordshire. Photos to be uploaded shortly or please contact me for more info.
