Technical / Re: funny spark issue
if i could upload pictures it may help, basically now on a deeper investagation an time with the car. The engine doesnt fully turn over, turns clock wise to a certain point an then back towards a certain point. removed an timed cambelt up, still the same thing. knowing it was a non interferece engine, i then decided to remove belt an try just crank, spins over a treat. How ever same cant be said for the camshaft. i then removed some parts, took rocker cover off, only to find i have 2 stuck lifters


Have left to soak overnight, an checking back a few mins later 1 of the lifters had popped up as i closed the bonnet down, i dont think i shall get lucky twice, so have sourced an engine an will consider rebuilding this one much later

Hi on another forum someone had a similar problem. He finally solved the issue he found the coil was at fault.

sadly i dont think its a spark issue now, tonight i decided to take a little look into the engine a little further, noticed the rotor arm was still in same postion so i thought i will try turning engine by hand to see if rotor moves. turns out it does, but my enginenot turning over fully, comes to a complete stop, i can turnit backwards to a almost same fixed point, as if something has trully failed inside the engine

The rules around insurance when we were that age and the rules these days are totally different.  I was told by my broker that until he turns 21, a modified car is a non starter.  And I'm well familiar with modified cars having had them for 30 years.

Your quite possibly right, if im honest i got many projects, an this is not gonna happen in time id wager

finally got round to putting some serious time in on the mk2 gti this week, an im now at the stage of starting it. How ever when i turn the ignition on, i have spark on the plug nearest the ccambelt end. an only when ignition is switched on for the 1st time. then nothing on any of the plugs when im cranking, including the one that showed life, thou im assuming its only shorting out on ignition on


i would like to add, only thing. i havent put back on the golf is there alternator, thou i dont think this would stop it sparking ?
i have no imobilzer that im aware off, my cap an leads are ok, but again assuming i get a single spark there possibly not the issue

Has anyone here, ever managed to solve issues with them before.

ive ordered many times, but this year, i had a parcel with missing items, an another parcel with a random part. instead of the bit i ordered

ive tried emails, i tried via ebay messages, each time i did get a response finally, they then dont bother to reply again. given i worked 3 doors up by chance 2 fridays ago, only to speak to a member of dispatch in the warehouse, who couldnt help, but did equally tell me there after sales in the office beyond useless

while late night googling, i came a cross a post, im yet to look at mine, but they stated there indiacators, wasnt working of the stork. turned out to be a blown fuse, so with your ideas, got a few things to work with now

Hi Mate,

That's correct, a diesel alternator usually has an additional "W" output to run a rev counter.
That then goes to A2/6 as per below...

(I'm assuming you have a CE2 setup)

i do indeed have ce2. thank you so much

monkey, i know your a resident guru, so can i pick your mind on another one, i have ce1 gti 8v, the indiacator green led, glows away gentle while the hazards or indiacators are of, then works fine when one of the above is in use, any ideas

Technical / Rev counter issues
Hey people, wondering if anyone here can help with a wiring question on this topic.


my mk2 started life as a petrol engine, been coverted to a diesel, the one issue that bugs me a lot is the fact my rev counter doesnt work, while at the mot station, the tester put this unit across the battery an got a read out of the revs. So i find my self wanting to address this issue again.

now from what i see diesel engines get there pulse from the alternator, an thats how the rev counter works. Right ?

a petrol engine gets it from the coil ? is that right ?

anyone shed light on this, becuase then at least i now know what the issue could well be

I get what you saying, how ever from previous dealings of this nature from when i was 20 ish, i had mk2 16v, with a 1.3 engine in it "yes i know a sucker for a dub rather then a volkswagon". How ever insurance was same sort of money give or take £10 when i compared it to a real 1.3 mk2 at the time. Hence is this worth doing or not, insurance id like to think is not the issue, as its just engine size thats changed

As some of you know i got a mk2 with an engine in it that, im really not keen on. ive got a second car now, so this one was going to go, but with the lad turning 17 soon ish, his rather keen on it, now a 1.3 or 1.6 carb engine dont turn up often.

Yet ive got a mk3 1.4 auto, that is mine should i want it, im going to take some parts full stop, as little earner on ebay,

But engine is 30k from new, still runs, sounds nice, the car it self is not worth saving, but would this be an easy engine swap, or do i mot mine as planned, flog it. Then just find a 1.3/1.6 that already runs etc
