Members' Cars / Re: Mr J 833KLY :{)
Hi Damien.
You right. No listing for this part (even VW Heritage don’t offer them). I believe they appeared on Mk1 and some Mk3?
Cunning plan by German engineers to get 0-60 time down?

Is that a ‘naked’ throttle pedal I see?
You’ll certainly get warmed up this winter getting new rubber over cold metal peddle lol.

Other Problems / Re: No heat from heater
Recent GOV.UK survey cited 91% of people are satisfied with their lives.
The other 9 percent own a Volkswagen.
I would get out more but it’s raining cats and dogs here as well.

Members' Cars / Re: LUCY ‘91 Mk2 Golf GTI Alpine White
Have recently had tie rods and ball joints replaced and now wonder about the merits of having front wheels aligned. I’m trying to track down (see what I did there) someone who is familiar with MK2s and will adjust wheels with correct camber/toe in values.

Eddypeck: Since you have just gone down this road recently will you align wheels yourself or do you know someone locally you trust to do it properly? Also, is it possible to align Golf GTi rear wheels?

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: Three buses at once!
Huzzah! for Gorilla super glue.

Pig to line up all four sides of inner shell onto glove box frame, undoubtedly due to plastic distortion from old age/sun heat, but managed to ‘line up’ after removing lower shelf unit. This glue uses moisture (brush surfaces with water) and air as catalysts to reach a strong bond after a couple of hours, albeit, it eventually takes on the colour of vomit.

Now realise annoying noise, emanating from passenger side whilst driving, probably caused by shell rattling around and/or loose fitted lower shelf (3 out of 5 screws not tightened up sufficiently).

Yes, the hard plastic glovebox inner shell.

You need to be a gymnast to access this area but found I can manoeuvre this shell/liner by one hand from behind, without removing (5 screws) passenger side lower dashboard shelf. It’s not obvious if this item is simply a push fit from the inside around the actual glove box frame or if it should be secured by others means? Have a pot of ‘Gorilla’ super glue on standby but experience reminds me that few, if any, mainstream glues ever work well plastic on plastic.

Singularly failed to remove the four rivets from my broken lower bonnet catch due to either duff drill bit(s) or incompetence, or both, will ask local garage to undertake this ‘15’ minute job. Always happy to do as much as I can myself albeit with proper tools.

Did however manage to replace glove box bulb successfully, so day not a total loss lol.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Three buses at once!
The joys of running 31 year old car.
Too much time on hands, (retired), decided to check oil level and hoover/clean upholstery etc.
Oil, good level and clear but lower bonnet catch spring gave up ghost and now can’t safely close same. Went to glovebox to peruse handbook for any ‘top tips’ (laugh) and noticed glovebox interior light not working (bulb blown) and to complete trilogy found glovebox inner shell was detached and sitting at back of dashboard exposing lots of failed glue applications used to try and keep it in place. Does anyone know how these hard plastic liners should be held in place?
Mr Heritage has despatched ‘next day delivery’ of pattern lower catch and 4 pop rivets (£2.15 each!) the cable is still serviceable.
Now need to unearth my trusty riveter last used to reassemble an errant motorcycle mudguard in 1990’s. I am supremely confident I can sort these issues myself, God knows I built enough AIrfix kits in my youth.

Engine & Gearbox / Re: Standard Exhaust...
I went the ‘expensive’ Heritage route for rear, middle and front boxes (German made, twin pipe stainless items) plus strengthened hangers.
I also bought new down pipe (1A above) and VW heat shield (6A above) for my 1990 GTi. Have not fitted either as original down pipe still serviceable plus to fit heat shield properly you need to lower subframe at disproportionate time/expense. Have both items for sale at £95 if anyone interested?
The new arrangement closely mirrors OEM spec and sounds almost identical, however as reported earlier feel the system needs to be ‘tuned’ as I am experiencing some body vibration at idle. This completely disappears when revs pick up when moving off and is not present anywhere else in rev range. Might don my fettlin’ hat and try hanging some of my fishing lead weights at strategic points on exhaust lol.
Definitely needs to be the signature Golf twin pipe in my opinion.

Noticed you appear to have abandoned original heat shield on down pipe for exhaust wrap? My heat shield has disintegrated and thinking of doing same but not sure if this will mitigate heat soak on steering rubbers etc?

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Low light
Update on low dash lighting phenomenon.
Removed headlight switch and lo and behold it was incorrect (11 pin) connection. Now fitted ‘correct’ 10 pin item and improved illumination of dash in evidence.
Have also fitted Italian leather steering wheel (350 mm) principally to make access to car easier for my poor old bones, I believe standard wheel is 375? It looks the canines appendage if I do say myself and also lends a period upgrade effect. Of course will retain original steering wheel. This is the third departure from stock, as car came with lowered springs and 195 width tyres/BBS RA’s.

Your Non Mk2 Cars or Bikes / Re: 2005 Kawasaki ZRX (Rex) 1200s
On subject of hairy bikes. My last steed was a 1979 Honda CBX which ran beautifully during the 18 months I had her. This bike scared me in a good way and gave my muscles a good work out! Always had bikes whenever pocket money allowed but wifey never bonded with any of them. The only time I got her on as pillion the wretched bike of the day (1969 Triumph T150 US import)
Shed a battery earth and left us both stranded on A38 in Somerset, in the rain of course.
Have promised myself a Norton 961 Cafe Racer for 70th birthday if I can still get my leg over lol.

Other Problems / Re: Vacuum
Had another gander at my 1990 digi GTi in light of Eddypeck’s comments.
My car has a ‘thick’ pipe exiting inlet manifold at right hand side when viewing from front of vehicle. This alters profile into two ongoing smaller pipes. The larger of the two (black) services the brake servo and the much smaller translucent pipe heads back into the bulkhead and links to the multi-functional indicator.
Hope this assists.

Engine & Gearbox / Tuning weights?
Here is a ‘detail’ item?
Have always thought my car’s engine vibrated a bit more than designed to do when idling. Indeed, this low level vibration is transmitted to steering wheel. As soon as I touch the throttle it smooths out completely.
I recall many moons ago reading an article which referenced ‘tuning weights’ for exhaust systems. I have recently replaced most of my exhaust system with s/s items but recall car vibrated a bit excessively at idle before this. At time I had all three engine mounts replaced so relatively happy this not cause.
My heat shield now removed (rotted through) so can’t blame that.
Any thoughts folks?

Other Problems / Re: Vacuum
Bad news, better news.
Undertook inspection of my GTi (1990 digi) saw nothing remotely like your errant vacuum piping stemming from right hand side of engine? Wonder if your car has been subject of a ‘modification’ in its past?
However, while under bonnet spotted corroded starter motor connection, now sorted.
