General Chat / Re: age of forum members
The older I get, the earlier it gets late?
Sometimes I think I bought my golf to try and slow the process (revisiting my finer years), now on the look out for a Triton motorcycle project.

General Chat / Re: age of forum members
Everest conquered, and current Queen to throne at year of my birth. First Golf when I was deemed to be a ‘yuppie’ in 1988 swiftly followed by a 3 series BMW 2.0i six pot which was more in keeping with the yuppie moniker.

I.C.E & Electrical / Re: Low light
Thanks both, will explore bulb status further. Mind you, got to question whether hour plus to remove dash to access the three bulbs behind instrument binnacle is worth the aggro?

I.C.E & Electrical / Low light
Is it me?
Just run car in dark for first time since purchase and not impressed by instrument lighting in dash. Despite cranking adjustable knurled dial up to max’ the resultant white light illumination is to my mind ‘half-hearted’ albeit it does the important job of making my speedometer legible. Similarly, my electric window switches are faintly illuminated.
Could I have wrong bulbs fitted or is this degree of illumination the norm for 32 year old VW? I would also liked to have either red or green lighting to compliment the GTi theme. Are there any mods out there to meet this perceived problem?
As ever, any advices gratefully received.

Mk2 Golf Chat / Re: It’s gone!!!
I’ve just ordered a Mk1 radiator cap/cover and using a bit of ‘Blue Peter’ nouse cut it to fit. It really is a detail tidy and from a practical angle it now covers the exposed radiator fins at the top from being damaged by stray tools and heavy handed ness in this area. It even has a VW part reference embossed on right hand side!

Bodywork & Paintwork / Re: N/S Head Lamp rear cover
My ‘89 GTi 8V does not have a cover for n/s headlight but has one for o/s like you. Mr Haynes does not elude to any such cover in it’s description regarding replacing n/s headlight bulb either.

Mk2 Golf Chat / ‘all that glisters is not gold’
Bank Holiday debate:
Have, not for first time, come across another full page ad for ‘FTC Fuel tank pellets’ extolling virtues of this once only fix to achieve removal of and build up of carbon deposits resulting in restoration of lost performance and efficiency?
While the ‘science’ seems unchallenged by experts it seems evidence of worthwhile gains are thin on the ground. Honest John simply reports use of branded petrol is sufficient.
Any out there actually taken a punt in this direction and witnessed any benefits?

General Chat / Catalyst?
Just found the VW MK2 (1988) advert featuring Paula Hamilton on Google. A seminal moment for this vehicle I feel. Bought my first GTi a few weeks later after wife to be kept banging on about how impressed she was with the feminine link?
As matter of interest administration how many lady members does forum have? I trust this is not a politically incorrect enquiry?

Interior, Upholstery & Trim / Re: Front dashboard finisher (s)
See Damien.wrl contribution today @ ‘members cars’ ref’ Vinnie 35k miles’ 07.57 hours.
Amongst several pictures of white GTi two give clear impression of some sort of ‘shroud’ over top of radiator??
As OEM for this car is vouched for it would appear such an item exists even if a period after-market item.

Interior, Upholstery & Trim / Re: Front dashboard finisher (s)
Mr Google threw up a number of ‘GTI’ (MK2) engine bay images where it clearly showed some form of top radiator cover, possibly a felt type material, to protect the radiator matrix on the top right hand side which is not covered by the front cross member. Perhaps these were North American spec images?

I believe the Golf MK1’s had such an item?

Another senior moment?
Noticed that at leading edge of GTi dashboard (below front screen) #7 oblong recesses approximately  1/2” in length. Are these linked to ‘de-mist’ function or should there be 7 plugs or some kind of screw/clip arrangement?
I must get out more, but still trying to bottom out if my car is missing an upper radiator cover!
