Rear Arch Liners / Engine Undertray...

Mooching around looking for something and google threw this outfit up.

Was aware of the rear liners (think Heritage do copies of them) and that the diesel had an official undertray but didn't realise they were being reproduced.

Not for me, but interesting to see.

They could have saved me getting a couple of annoying holes round the fuel filler flap!

I thought the rear arch liners were just an after market thing.

They were after market I’ve just spent a couple of filthy days on a rust hunt cleaning out my rear arches. They are thoroughly undersealed and there are no mounting points for liners.

Having just done a load of welding in that area it might be a nice idea to have them though, if for no other reason than to prevent the tester rating my weld lol

So I resorted to Google... VW International and VW Heritage stock them!
I've ordered the right rear from VWH and will check how it fits before ordering the other. It was only £20.46 delivered and it will most likely be exactly the same as the one unearthed by Martin.

I'll update when I've done a trial fitting.

I received the arch liner but I haven't fitted it yet.
I think the 3 wedges may need adjusting to allow for the thickness of the plastic arches along with a couple of screws to hold it in-place.

More to follow...this is harder on a phone!

I hope nobody was holding their breadth....
So being as the Golf is currently parked at home and not outside my Mum's I decided to trial fit the rear Offside liner.
The moulding isn't great, I don't like the "dimpled effect", but it fits pretty well and should stop the crud collecting round the arch lip and stones damaging the rear. It will look loads better with a layer of road dirt on it!
I'm pleased enough to order the left arch liner.
Before I fit it I'll probably leave it in the sun (the conservatory will be warming-up soon) so it's nice an flexible and gives a good snug fit. I'm thinking of just using as few self-tapping screws as possible based upon the lip having those wedges.

How time flies.
This weekend I fitted the Driver's side rear arch liner. Firstly I jet washed the arches, when dry I sprayed copious amounts of Lanoguard.
Because the petrol tank fIller is on the offside the fixing points are a bit limited. I also didn't want to use too many screws.
I've managed to use one screw at the base of the rear inner arch and another just forward of the strut. I didn't have proper liner screws so temporarily used what I have and will buy some proper ones tomorrow.
The liner was right against the strut so I trimmed it and used tie wraps through the filler neck moulding holes. Seems nice and secure.
I was going to fit the nearside arch liner however the "wedges" that are attached to the liner weren't straight/too snug so I've cut them off and glued them back on. Fixing that will be easier because the tank isn't in the way.

Nearly ready for winter! Oh cr4p I used the W word.

Is it supposed to tuck behind the arch trim?

I know that would require the arch trim removal, which is riveted. I quite fancy a set of these but it seems like too much effort and I'm not happy about the screw fitting. Thanks for sharing though, it's good to have some details on these.

All of the cars I have with arch liners tuck behind the rims.
They tend to be used on cars that are not sealed underneath and they do trap dirt and moisture and cause rust. I'm not sure they are the greatest idea for a MK2 but providing they are taken off periodically and cleaned up they should prevent heavy stone damage.

Possibly Tim ☺. I just fitted them this way to minimise the possibility of 'crud' getting to the metal arch. The passenger one doesn't fit as well at the rear but that is due to the arch return being too wide from when the rear quarters were repaired. I'll sort that next year.
One point to note. I bought the RH one from Heritage via eBay £21 free postage last year. The LH one was about £31 bought direct with 10% dizzy + postage!

The intention is that they will be removed periodically.
