Newbie to the scene

Hi all,

Newbie to the scene here.  Not new to old classics but last time I had a MK2 I had still had hair.

I’ve jumped in the deep end on a slightly drunken impulse buy and ended up with a 1990 BAM 1.8 16v Turbo.  Fair few things done to the old girl but many gremlins in the electrics that will prevent the likes of me who is just happy to successfully replace the fuse in my kettle when it pops from completing.

Anyone know a fellow enthusiast in Surrey GU12 who might be able to take a look and advise or even can anyone recommend a good auto electrician who might be able to work with me.

List of specs below.

Golf Mk2 1990 1.8 GTi 16v 1.8T converted
6 speed manual 5door Tornado red

Engine
- 1.8t Bam setup on AGU
- 6 speed gearbox from mk5 tsi
- K04 turbo custom
- Cold Air k&n intake
- Toyosports large intercooler
- Forge Tip
- Defi original guages (boost,oil pressure,temp)
- Bam fuel rail and injectors
- Battery to boot relocation
- Water globe delate
- Ac delete
- Fuel pump & tank upgrade
- Professionally Remapped by Turbo Technics running safely
- Track Slag turbo down pipe 3inch
- Custom cat back exhaust & Race cat 3inch
- Sai delete

Suspension
- Gaz gold coilovers fully adjustable
- Subframe just freshly been polybushed including top mounts front and back
- Dare rs alloy wheels 9.5J rears 7.5 Front with Toyo T1R tyres all around
- Front engine strut brace
- Sway bars front & rear

Interior
- Golf mk4 dashboard conversion with mk4 key and central locking
- Vw bora illuminated vents
- Nardi wooden Steering wheel with removable boss kit in gold and window winders to match
- New original door cards front & back
- Recaro Wingback front seats with rear bench leathers.
- Ambient colour changing lights on floors
- Illuminated 6 soeed gear know
- Sunroof works perfectly no leaks etc
- no roof lining because its impossible to find one thats not sagging.
- New carpets

Biggest issue will be I have no hazards or indicators, although I can hear the relay clicking when the immobiliser is playing up.

No reverse light.

It has a Mk4 dash and Frankenstein loom and I have ABS warnings flashing alongside airbags etc.  this doesn’t bother me but the pings every now and again will get on my nerves.

Car starts from cold idles fans kick in starts stops and generally behaves quite well.

But no flashy lights on the corners, no chance of an MOT.

Was thinking of making a stand alone loom for the indicators and brake etc as this could be a much simpler fix than diagnosing and curing the existing loom.

Help, Thoughts,  positive comments welcome.

Thanks again,

Paul Cchewy

Also how do an add pics?  Tried to copy and paste but no joy???

HI and welcome.

You have a car that’s had a lot done to it, and when sorted sounds like it’ll be pretty nice.

But for me electrical problems are difficult enough when a car hasn’t been messed with. So sorry not much help but wanted to welcome you to the club and wish you luck.

I would probably take a similar approach to what you’re thinking and start again with the loom. But others may be more useful.
